Late 2003, or very early 2004. I was just watching this video of the band Los Lonely Boys playing at Auditorium Shores on March 20, 2004. The building already had the lights on then. I went to see this concert and was still drooling over the building. lol That was a cool night with some good music and a beautiful skyline as a backdrop. Check out the vid and the others from that concert in the playlist linked below. I believe the song "Real Emotions" has some nice sweeping views of downtown. They were putting on a big show for this concert. It was being filmed for a DVD (this is it).

Either way, the impact on the skyline is tremendous as it is now. I spotted the Austonian from Steiner Ranch for the first time. Never before have I been able to see downtown AND Lake Travis from a single location.

By the way, if you are looking for a spectacular view of the lake and surrounding hill country, check out the Steiner Ranch Steakhouse. There's often live music on the outdoor patio (with the lake as a backdrop). And yes, you can see downtown from there as well (peeking over antenna hill).

Totally agreed... In addition to Steiner Ranch, I have spotted The 'A peeking above the ridges of west Austin in multiple locations (620 corridor in particular). It is the only building visible in most cases (though occasionally you'll spot the very TIP of Frost).

There are a few spots farther to the north and west I will check out this weekend. We could be looking at a 20+ mile view (yeah, I'm a geek).

Ok all you height-aholics. I got a good ( and easy ) question for ya:

I Was walking downtown today, looking at the effect of the facade shift on the upper floors of the Austonian, and thought of a good question: What is the height of the top of the floor where the facade of the Austonian changes??? (floor and height) It would be a great way to compare the height to other buildings in town and take away the challenge of perspective and elevation!

On July 3rd I went to Steiner Ranch for visiting some friends and I noticed the crane of the Austonian and to very near the horizon, the Austonian.

Frost just wants to be the tallest in Austin. He'll try to pop up in pictures that are meant to show new places where the Austonian is NOW visible.

I believe I heard/read somewhere that the exterior changes on the Austonian began at the 40th floor. I would guesstimate that would mean approximately 440'. Does anyone have the facts?

I was at Steiner Ranch steak house about 3 months ago and saw Frost from there and the Austonian was still lurking behind the hills.

I then knew it was only a matter of time.

BTW, while the views are amazing at the steakhouse, I felt the food was a little unimpressive considering the price. However I would go back.

Close one Scottolini! The 40th floor is at 441FT 6 inches!.
Not sure if the exterior change is on floor 41, 453FT 2 inches.

Priller, I can't find the whole elevation plan. Please tell me where to find it.

Oh yeah, its a high-end restaurant for sure... at least based on the cars in the valet lot. Haven't eaten there yet, but I did pop in late yesterday to check out the the place. From the edge of the parking lot, I noticed not only the 'A and Frost, but also 360, Ashton and even the top of One American Center...

Until then, my views were limited to Steiner Ranch Blvd, which is situated approx 30-40 feet below the restaurant.

Hello everyone. Just to let everybody know, I am headed to D.C this Saturday. Nothing wrong though. I can post from there.

Now with my report on construction in downtown:

The Austonian: 53rd floor in working. Crane at 676' still.
W Austin Hotel and Residences: 10th floor in the works. Buff in construction speed. Cranes at approximately ~210 and ~150 feet high.
Spring: Topped out. Now leasing. Austinites may say it is complete. Just looks complete to me.
Ashton: Topped out. Now leasing. Lobby work.
Four Seasons Private Residences: Topped out-Crane halfway down. Glass placement on-going.

Hi again fltnpatx. I will grow to be an astronomer, geologist, journalist, and one who researches the art of buildings here and around the world.

Here are some dates for me about buildings:

2004: I grow passion in buildings
2005: I study buildings in the USA
2006: I study buildings around the world. I also learn about Burj Dubai
2007: I study the supertall
2008: I study buildings in Austin
2009: I study the Austin construction boom. I even have a PowerPoint of 3 booms. They are the one in the 70's and 80's, the Technology Boom, and this one, the Residential Boom

Is Four Seasons crane down yet? Just seems right. Glass going up, crane going down.
Does anybody on this forum live on the 30 floor+ in 360 Condominiums? You could update us with weekly pictures of the Austonian.

I found this interesting on this Graphisoft/ArchiCAD site.

Try Lago Vista. If you go out to see where the Austonian can be seen from afar. You are not a nerd. You have company. If I was in Austin right now I would drive all around to look at Austionian far views too. But I am in Lexington where the high tomorow and sunday will be in the low 70s and lows in the upper 40s.
