Any places you have in mind? Yes, it's amazing that our tallest building just over five years ago, a really iconic one, is now invisible in places. Did you know a few years ago it was so iconic I thought they were to make Frost Bank Tower View Corridors. Now when I think back that seems impossible.

yep. Hard to believe that Frost didn't open until early 2004 ( right? or late 2003?) . Either way, It is crazy to think how much has changed in so little time.

Frost and the capital are still our most iconic buildings. Frost is beautiful lets hope we get another. Maby T.Stacy has something else in store for us

Isn't Westech 360 that 2-3 story office park across from the Arboretum? I wouldn't quite put it in the same iconic stratosphere as the UT Tower and company

Famous Buildings in Austin

Westech 360 Building

The building features a sculpture by Benar Venet known as "The Red Check". Rising 80 feet off the ground the sculpture has made the building famous locally.

It was built in 1986 and I lived on Great Hills Trail until the fall of 1987 and should have seen it hundreds of times coming down Great Hills Trail to 360 every morning to go to work, yet I don't remember it at all.

I just realized that they moved the gray crane at the W on Sunday. If you look at this old photo you can see there is a third crane base in the NE corner. That's where they moved it to, so now the gray crane is along the east side of the tower.

I believe someone on the board said they were planning to move the crane once the tower portion was underway. So I guess the gray crane will now grow with the tower. But I'm still a bit confused about the yellow crane, as it still looks like it's too close to the tower to stay as it is for much longer.

Also, they've started on the 10th floor.

I sat on Sunday having breakfast at the Austin Java and was so hung over I just sat there looking at all the crane junk in the street....did not realize until later in the day what they were doing! Oh,OH....... damn hangover!

My old supervisor and I used to joke that the "Red Check" came about due to a few stray lines on the CAD drawing that someone forgot to erase. Contractor: "Well, it's on the plans...."

Is there any scale measuring how loosely a word can be used? Namely "Sculpture".

Just a little report on things construction in downtown.

Austonian: Working on the 53rd floor. Predicted 56th floor completion, July 20, 2009, seems to be a bit un-accurate, me say August 7th this year.

W Austin Hotel and Residences: Seems that the workers are trying to get this done at minimal time. Gray crane (shorter one) is moved to NW corner. 10th floor in the works.

Austonian making a major impact on skyline from that distance. In all respects 360 is a 470 footer from that distance because the spire and podium are not observed well from more than 2 miles away. And at 10 miles the spire is not even visable to the average eye. It looks to tower over all.

the night time impact should be really nice! That is going to be a big lantern! I think the night is when it will be really cool to see how far away you can see it!
