I took the survey and then posted it to my facebook, telling people to put emphasis on walkable communities. A bunch responded saying stupid things like, "I hate walking." to which I replied, "This is why people hate Utah."

That and that dumb truck I saw with a bumper sticker that says "I love global warmer" and had a fake nutsack hanging off of it.

Yeah the fake sacks are great! I also enjoy the other telltale signs of hillbillies, such as the boy peeing on the Chevy or Ford logo.

I don't remember ever reading a reason why. The building was originally built as a one story structure in 1863, and had several floors added later. It's original stone facade was refaced with terra-cotta in 1916. Then the top two floors were removed after they were refaced--sometime after the 1920's. Why? I've got no idea. Maybe they were damaged in the big earthquake in the 30's?

I just saw my first "bronze" nut-sack-trailer-hitch-hanger-offer thing last week. I had to speed up just so I could see what the driver looked like. -Speechless about the nut sack! I told my wife I would get her a vagina for the Nissan if she liked. I suppose we could suction cup it to the middle of the trunk?

A spanish country style restaurant, called Pago, will open on 9th and 9th. And a new high end place, called Forage, will open at about 4th E. and 9th S.

Judge orders mediation on Odd Fellows Hall standoff

The historic Odd Fellows Hall will stay put for now.
A federal judge on Monday refused to order work to continue on the 118-year-old building, which is to be moved to a new Market Street site to make way for a new courthouse.
However, U.S. District Judge William Downes said two firms that are locked in a contract dispute over the project must agree to mediation terms by Friday.
Work on the building transport stalled last month. General contractor Layton Construction says subcontractor Emmert International walked off the job, leaving the building perched on its own equipment.
Oregon-based Emmert International, which specializes in moving heavy structures, claimed Layton Construction owes it money.
Layton Construction asked Downes to order Emmert to continue moving the building. Downes on Monday declined, stating that Layton did not demonstrate that a few weeks' delay would irreparably damage the project or jeopardize the public interest.
Downes also said that the two companies have not made "any significant good-faith efforts" to resolve the dispute through mediation. He gave the companies until Friday to agree on a mediator and offered two potential recruits: Former U.S. Ambassador and Wyoming Gov. Mike Sullivan and Boise mediator Merlyn Clark.
"Both Layton and Emmert will suffer if this dispute drags on," Downes said in a phone conference with the companies' attorneys. "It's time for you to tell your clients to get off the dime."

Pago opened a couple weeks ago, and it is excellent. Their tomato soup with a hint of citrus, in particular. It's a nice space, too, and they focus on local and organic suppliers. And no, I don't work there or know the owner

Forage?! Really? that's the name of the place? And it is supposed to be nice? Maybe I should start a place called "Trough". I'm all for new places opening up, but I think the marketing teams might want to come up with some better names.

That is kind of a funny name, but it's also kind of cool. Sounds like someplace very hip, but with a twist of sarcastic humor like you would find on Melrose in L.A.

It appears Forage is run by the same people who own Spark in Provo. Spark is a pretty good place, so Forage should be good.

RDA approved money and a design to redo the gallivan today. Also, purchased the Utah Theater for a film center. Trib has articles.

Excellent news about the Utah Theater!! A film center will be an ideal use for the building. I hope that both it, and the 'broadway' theater are able to progress quickly. We'll soon have a fantastic arts district downtown!

The city council also voted unanimously to send the bond for the public safety building to the ballot in November.

Wow, that was my fondest wish of all, to see the old Utah Theater become a film center. That is FANTASTIC!!!

We were talking about what would be excellent additions to Main as a compliment to CCC. This is another incredible piece of the puzzle. First, a world class theater for the largest touring Broadway productions, and now a major historic gem to be restored as a film center. It just doesn't get any better for Main and adding to what will be a major arts district. This is also going to have a major impact for downtown Salt Lake's presence during Sundance. I predict Redford and Sundance will be very anxious to push downtown in order to take pressure off of Park City, which is bursting at the seams.

Visions of a film center on Main Street now include brick and mortar.

Salt Lake City's Redevelopment Agency agreed Tuesday to buy the historic Utah Theater and neighboring retail spaces for $7 million.

The shuttered buildings -- at 144 S. and 156 S. Main -- are owned by developer Rick Howa and are across the street from the city's planned Broadway-style theater.

"A film center is central to downtown's cultural corridor," Jason Mathis, executive director of the Downtown Alliance, said in a statement. "The Utah Theater has languished for many years, and now there is movement and a clear plan going forward as part of a larger vision for Main Street. This is great news."

The Salt Lake Film Society, SLC Film Center and Spy Hop Productions want to create a venue for independent films and art exhibitions that could be used by the Sundance Film Festival and other groups. The venture has been pushed by, among others, Scott Anderson, president and CEO of Zions Bank.

In April, Salt Lake County adopted an expansive cultural master plan that includes the film center as one of 15 "master plan projects" recommended for county funds.

The Utah Theater was passed over last year in the capital's casting call for a space for a 2,400-seat Broadway playhouse. Mayor Ralph Becker instead picked the Newspaper Agency Corp. building across Main.

A renovation of the Utah Theater for the center has been pegged at roughly $25 million.

The theater debuted in 1918 as a stage for vaudeville performances. Later it became a movie house, but has not functioned as one since Cineplex Odeon left in the 1980s.

"It's had a very important place on Main Street for decades," said City Councilman Eric Jergensen, who is chairman of the Redevelopment Agency Board. "We have the ability to take it and rejuvenate it as a very important place on Main Street for decades to come."

After a few tweaks — and a six-month delay — Salt Lake leaders are moving forward with an $8 million makeover of the Gallivan Center.

Tuesday, the city's Redevelopment Agency approved a plan to construct a two-story building along 200 South, expand the center's amphitheater and build an at-grade ice rink...

...The two-story building will be mostly glass and will hold enough restrooms to handle 5,000 people. It also will house skate-rental and banquet facilities.

...The six-month process gleaned a few alterations from the original redesign, including a shade structure over the rink, a tower that acts as a terminus to Regent Street and a few landscaping improvements...

This is awesome news! Especially since I've had many dealings with Spy Hop Productions (in fact I just got home from a night shoot for one of their short films). They exposed me to much more of the filmmaking process than the UofU has yet... although, that might change this coming semester.

I was working on a film set all night on the corner of 300 South & 300 East. We had to set up some lights on top of the coffee shop on that corner and I saw the perfect opportunity to get a panorama of half the (prominent) skyline.

We got the cops called on us, and I must say, it feels good to disappoint them when they come looking for ways to get us in trouble, but we slam permits galore in their faces. Sorry... had to vent... I really dislike cops, especially when they try to bust film sets.
