I went for a run on the shoreline trail behind Research Park and while I was there, took a few photos with my iPhone of the U's new Natural History Museum under construction.

Thanks Stenar for those update pics. Very excited to see this baby up and going. It's going to be quite the world class facility. With the continued expansion and many improvements of both Hogle Zoo,This Is The Place State Park and this major museum, that corner of Salt Lake is turning into quite the destination for outstanding activities.

Children's Miracle Network opens new headquarters in Salt Lake

SALT LAKE CITY -- Friday was a big day for Salt Lake-based The Children' Miracle Network, as the organization opened its new international headquarters in Salt Lake City.

I work in the neighborhood around the new headquarters. They fixed the building up quite nicely. If you guys get a chance you can drive by it 700 south 200 west, on the southwest corner of the intersection.

I remember that building when it was vacant. They did do an impressive job with it. I'm glad that it has been occupied. Now if the condos around it would just fill up...
That area is trying so hard to rejuvinate and become urban. It's got such potential, with the baseball stadium, and the trax line, and parts of it have really worked. I just hope it accelerates once the economy improves a bit.

Don't forget Red Butte Gardens!! I am also looking forward to this new facility for the musuem. Their current building is lovely, but it's cramped and outmoded. It will be nice to have their collection be more open to public viewing. I also think it's location is completely appropriate. It's among other public attractions, and the more natural setting suites a natural history museum.

I don't remember what people thought of this design. While I don't have a problem with the location and agree that the natural setting is a benefit to what is being taught and advocated for, I would have liked it to be downtown. 100 S. 500 W. would have been nice locale. Further, it would have been nice to locate it near trax so that they could advocate mass transit as way of benefiting the natural environment.

I really don't like renderings of the outside, but I think the inside is fantastic.

I was thinking the reverse, the outside is nice and the inside is awful.

Salt Lake streets have seen many changes over past 150 years

Shortly after the Mormon pioneers arrived, Brigham Young directed that the streets in downtown Salt Lake City be wide enough for a wagon team to turn around without "resorting to profanity."

Over the years, those streets have maintained their 132-foot width. But a lot has changed...

Can anyone tell me when and why the top two floors were removed from the old Zions Bank?

Such a shame:

The trolley system was not "phased out in favor of gas powered busses," They were bought up by GM and Firestone and some oil company, who dismantled them because they wanted a monopoly on transportation.

Thanks for the picture. I can't look at pictures like this without feeling depressed about how much money we could have saved if those rails still existed today. I think that the car revolution would have happened the same even if they didn't tear up the tracks, but today we would have city with one of the most impressive mass transit systems. I guess the only thing to do is learn from mistakes and go forward.

I was checking out the updated Downtown Rising site and was surprised to see that the old Prudential Bank building has been incorporated into the lastest plan for Salt Lake Performance Center. I don't remember seeing it discussed here. It may have been tucked in among the large volume of other important topics. The Prudential Bank was last used as the downtown campus of the Salt Lake Community College.

It was always my understanding that the bldg would be a part of it, whether they used the actual bldg or tore it down and built something in its place.
