All I've heard is they wanted to replace the ornamental top with the same thing shape and size, but a different metal--copper. And it was a huge, huge hastle to get the permit for that change, too. Nobody lives in that building to my knowledge.

fflint - It looks like it already has a copper roof. I will keep an eye on it and see what happens in the next few weeks.

How about an increase of three feet instead?

From the renderings I thought the beige/lighter color would be bolder than it is, giving it more contrast with the glassier areas. Even so, seeing it in person today for the first time in a long while, I think it looks better than in photos where it does look rather flat.

Ultimately, this building is going to be all about masses and I don't think it can be judged until it's all there--which may be many years (not too many I hope).

Personally, I'm also willing to give it a pass for many faults as long as it does its main function--put lots of people living (and hopefull walking and shopping) on that dead stretch of Market St. In that light, you have to ask yourself what other design/finishes could have housed so many in such a footprint at affordable rents?

I don't really have a big problem with the Hilton. I've always thought the Westin St. Francis had a much uglier backside. I don't really see what's ugly about the backside of the library - it's not great, but I can think of many uglier things in that area.

Regardless, the only one of those three that bothers me is the Cathedral Hill Hotel - I tend to care a lot more about street level finishes than other things. The Cathedral Hill Hotel is an absolute disaster at the street level, and from renderings at least, Trinity Place looks to be pretty nice at that level.

SFView - thanks for the info. on the work on the roof of 1145 Market. I have viewed the copper roof for many years and it will be strange to see glass instead - should glow at night.

BTinSF - I agree about the masses to come. I am wondering how it will look when finished (if ever). It will be quite a mass of buildings in my view, but it will not block any of it for me. I will have many years to view Phase I before the other structures block a chunk of it.

Peanut Gallery - thanks for the different perspective photographs from the street of Phase I. Depending on the time of day and light the colors are different,sometimes grey, sometimes blue.

BAck when there were far far fewer highrises, in the early 80s, I always liked the hilton too. I just think that among critics, a lot of the high rises from the hiltons era are not liked.
This building though looks very nice and way better than soma grand - HA HA neighbors! Ill wave to them.

I still don't know which side, east or west, Ill prefer.

expect the exterior to be done around the 15th. they always post the night work schedule for us - and for some reason they do all the ext concrete panels at night. so this should be all wrapped up before the end of the month.

the gray/blue/silver depending on the light - is what makes this building look better than soma grand which always looks a little cheap. the light blue glass on soma with the beige, was just a color mistake, they should have done red stucco with black glass.

now, are they supplying the window treatments - blinds? drapes? or do we supply our own? Just what is the standard M.O. for rentals like this? I hate being kept in the dark like this. I hope I don't wind up too far from the garbage chute. I this thing done yet? I need to know if Ill need the right handed or left handed sectional.

Jerry - You're welcome. The weather here creates dramatically different lighting throughout the day, so it's good that some buildings take advantage of it.

nativeguy - every place I've ever rented came with at least basic window treatments, so I would hope yours will too. Interestingly enough, buying places has been a different experience.

The highest point of Trinity, Phase I, got a concrete crown today. Maybe two more pictures to take before it will be a done deal for the exterior.

Nativeguy 1964 - I would think you would want to be as far away from the trash chute as possible. I live one unit from the trash chute at the Fox Plaza and that is much too close. Noise is one factor - there are always cretins who throw bottles down the chute at 3:00 a.m. When there is a trash fire on the first floor (we have one at least once a year) I get the worst of the smoke. Be careful what you wish for! Though I do not notice it, people close to the chute complain about unpleasant odors - every day people put their garbage on the floor in the trash closet rather than dispose of it in the chute.

-yeah you're right right now i live two door down so I don't hear it much and I like the quick walk versus way down the hall. I'm sure that being a new building, the elevator/laundry/garbage situation will be well done.

One thing they did was put soem washers and dryers (2-3) on each floor. Tah's how it is here now, personally I don't like it because on busy days, you can wind up with loads of wash on multiple floors trying to find an open dryer. To me, it makes more sense to have one big laundry in teh basement, with 30 washers and dryers that way you aren't running all over the building trying to guess where one is available plus you can have change machines and other ammenties in there. But Ive found a cheap wash n fold on polk now I love not having to do it myself. at 80 cents a pound its cheaper than putting quarters in and doing it myself.

at some point they will start giving us resdidents tours of units so we can see the choices. I'm not sure when but they have to get a jump on it because with over 300 tenants, and each one making 5 choices, and being givin a number of days to choose, its going to be a long drawn out process to get everybody done.
