so i went to the open house the other day and found something funny.
I was talking with the one guy who worked with transit there. He seemed to think the canada line has some of flaws that could cause problems down the line like the lacking of switch over rail areas, and lack of room to expand easy. he also said skytrain is way better and wished canada line was the same.

You should've bought him a drink as he's dead on right...it's basically what I've been saying too for the last 3 years, god forbid it happening to the Evergreen too.

And of course, we can always count on Ravman on not politicizing and polarizing every single issue.

It's not even annoying anymore, it's just sad.

Give Canada line a chance to proof itself before being so negative.

SNC-Lavalin signs road, rail deal for 2014 Winter Olympics

Wed Jun 24, 2009 4:59pm EDT

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, June 24 (Reuters) - SNC-Lavalin Group Inc (SNC.TO) signed an agreement on Wednesday to manage the construction and maintenance of roads and railways for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, Canadian Trade Minister Stockwell Day said.

The value of the deal, which SNC signed with state-owned Russian Railways, was not disclosed. SNC could not be reached as its head office in Montreal was closed on Wednesday for a public holiday.

Day said the transaction involved 45 km (28 miles) of road and rail, including 27 km of tunnels through area mountains.

SNC, Canada's biggest engineering company, also officially opened an office on Wednesday in Sochi, a port city on the Black Sea.

SNC's stock closed up C$1.15, or 2.7 percent, at C$43.35 on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

Day was in Russia on a trade mission and to promote Canadian expertise in infrastructure, including that of plane and train maker Bombardier (BBDb.TO).

A Russian Railways executive said last month that the firm planned to order up to 550 million euros ($765 million) worth of high-speed trains from Bombardier as Sochi readies for the Olympics.

Canada's West Coast city of Vancouver is hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics.

($1=1.39 euros) (Reporting by Nicole Mordant; editing by Rob Wilson)

Where are our trains for the 2010 Olympics? All we got was a half-arsed highway upgrade and a rapid transit line that has nothing to do with the Olympic bid. Hummm.

^ well, the Russians are filthy rich.

Vancouver's Olympic expenditures are some of the most modest in recent Winter Games history, yet the public is already throwing a fit over what we're spending (yet, we're the largest host city to ever host the Winter Games)...and they're also able to tie in things that aren't even related to the Games.

Same accent tile as Broadway City Hall Station:

Good to see finished ceilings on the platform level:

Lots of space for advertsiements:

^ thanks for the pics..it's interesting to see how they didn't have space for ads when the platforms are on either side and the trains are in the middle (ex. Oakridge-41st)

You guys are talking about commuters parking at malls? Well, I think a lot of the Chinese people (no offense, I'm Chinese myself), especially the affluent ones will still be hell bent on driving because they associate "taking transit" with "lower social class". To them, owning and driving a luxury car is a status symbol. Even my parents said that they will continue to drive after the C-Line opens (btw, we're not rich) and my dad had probably taken transit only once or twice for the past 16 years.

Opportunistic? Yes. This leads to a lot of them not following rules of the roads, like parking at handicapped parking without the permit and parking at non-designated parking just for convenience. You know the rest.

Yah, I find that the only mode of transit that's managed to attract middle to upper class Asians so far is the West Coast Express.

It's sad that the people who live in condos within very convenient walking distance to skytrain end up driving anyway. Something's very wrong with that.

If the Oakridge open house is any indication, the ridership of Canada Line will be made up mostly by Asians.

Whether or not to use public transit is more tied with comfort and convenience,
that being said, one of the top 4 bus routes serving in Vancouver has very high ridership by Chinese people in particular.
And no matter what the wealthiest class will avoid taking transit.

There you have it. Upper middle class, means they're wealthy enough to afford driving most of the time. I know many examples of such people that couldn't be bothered to ride the skytrain or bus if their life depended on it though. Just different cultures I guess.

However, I can see the Canada line bringing a lot of change in the demographics of the transit system because of its immense accessibility in Richmond. They seriously need to contemplate another park and ride at Brighouse/Richmond Centre if they want to really hit home on getting people to ditch their cars (or atleast half ditch them).

I don't think another Park & Ride will really do anything. The drivers that will forever stick to their cars are people who don't work, thus don't need to commute to work.

I find it funny that the Chinese (particularly the ones from Hong Kong) won't give up their cars but they grew up and practically lived in an environment where transit and walking was the only option.

If there was a commute rail service similar to the West Coast Express serving Vancouver-Richmond-Ladner-South Surrey-White Rock, and also one dubbed "South Fraser Express", I think this is what's needed to grab the upper middle class. The demographics on West Coast Express is way different than regular Skytrain. You do see suits on Skytrain but you see way more on West Coast Express.

nice new pics . It seems that there may be a fairbit of work to do at some of the stations if the line is going to open for B.C. Day Weekend.

Yea. The Olympic Station seems it is about as far along as City Centre was 2 to 3 months ago. But they've gotten to this point pretty quick, so...

To be fair, the slowest station in terms of construction is Olympic Village. Most of them are fully complete already.
