As a transit fan, I am not going to pay $5 just to go and take photos/video of the Canada line or enjoy the ride, especially if I have a Province wide pass.

How did you get this pass? Not bagging on you or anything but for you to pay $5 on top of something you got for free or a low cost versus me paying $5 on top of the $269 28-day West Coast Express pass... the $5 is still $5 regardless.

JFK AirTrain, which you have to take from the subway or rail station if you are taking transit (JFK isn't directly served by subway or train) costs $5 each way (free between terminals). The JFK Airtrain is Bombardier ART. It's $5.50 on the AirTrain Newark. The reason for the fees is because the Airport Authorities paid for the link, much like YVR helped pay for Canada Line.

It costs over $5 to get to SFO on BART from Downtown. And BART tickets aren't valid on any bus system in the Bay area.

I don't think it's a great idea to charge the fare, but it's not unheard of, or even all that unreasonable a price.

I think YVR should just be a separate zone in our current zoned system. But It's probably easier for accounting sake to charge it as an add fare.

The whole thing will be a lot simpler with fare gates and smart cards and easy to enforce.

$5 for me in a sub $900/month income is allot of money (and I don't drink coffee/latias/etc, have no cable TV. The reason the blind have there pass is because this sort of crap is difficult to do for someone who can't see.

almost forgot to comment on the new transit map. The biggest problem I think is the inclusion of bus route 43. 43 is a peak hour only service on weekday only. Just imagine an infrequent rider or a tourist aims for UBC on Saturday and sees the map to decide that he/she should connect to 43, which will never come.

But, the Air Train is owned by the airport, not the metropolitan transit authority. New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority still runs three bus routes to the JFK terminals - Queens routes 3 and 10, and Brooklyn route 15. So you do have options getting to JFK.

I'd have no problem with the extra fee for Sea Island connection if the line was owned by the airport and Translink ran a bus to the airport as an alternative.

Well no YVR doesn't own the Canada Line but without their $300 million contribution the ~5km Airport section may not have happened... they could've scrapped the Canada Line altogether without the airport connection. They probably want revenue in return, plus they want maximum ridership which a non-premium bus would've compromised.

The map actually indicates that it is the 43... it even uses the lighter orange colour to denote that it's not a B-line.

I'm sure that it will be included for those with annual passes, which include those with disabilities and seniors, I believe. More information will likely be available in the coming weeks. We'll help to keep an eye out for further details (seeing as how this thread has moved 3 pages in the past 24 hours!).

The map in the Oakridge station prints 43. I am surprised that it does not list both 41+43

I don't think that the #41 Joyce Stn \UBC will change because that is a very busy local service which would run in conjunction with the B Line route.

Does any one know if the trolley line extensions to Marine Drive station are close to being ready?

Looking forward to the forum group-ride. I doubt they will short-circuit their whole "We're gonna launch it early!" announcement the ministry made earlier by launching it on BC day, even if it's ready.

i don't think so too. when i went back to home from bcit burnaby campus today, there were so many people to take 41 bus route. i hope 43 can upgrade to 91 B-Line, then it will reduce the loads of 41 because of too many people.

and if the 91 b-line can extend to bcit burnaby or brentwood station, heheee....

especially main, cambie, fraser, granville, oak, and knight...

Incidentally, did anyone comment on the lack of orange tile from the station? (as shown in the renderings)

Malls brace for parking deluge when new transit service begins

By REBECCA TEBRAKE, Vancouver Sun
June 29, 2009

VANCOUVER — Malls along the Canada Line are bracing themselves for a flood of commuter parking in their lots this September.

Bridgeport Station in Richmond is the only stop with a park-and-ride lot, where commuters can drop off their vehicles before hopping on the SkyTrain.

But the parking lots of several major malls, including Richmond Centre, Aberdeen Centre, Lansdowne Centre and Oakridge Centre, are within short walking distance from Canada Line stations.

“We are putting plans into place so that it doesn't become a park-and-ride,” said Richmond Centre spokesman Leslie Matheson of the mall’s parking lot.

“Parking is at a premium at Richmond Centre, so we want to make sure that people coming to shop have a place to park,” she said.

The mall is going to get tougher about enforcing its three-hour parking limit by hiring foot and bike patrols to monitor traffic.

Violators will get warning tickets, and could even be towed.

Matheson said the time limit won’t impact customers, who shop for 90 minutes on average.

Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie isn’t worried.

“The whole concept of the Canada Line was as much as possible that people would take public transportation to the Canada Line and then the Canada Line to a downtown destination,” said Brodie.

Vancouver’s Oakridge Centre — located near the West 41st Avenue Station — is also planning a crackdown. The mall will have a four-hour parking allowance before ticketing and towing violators. Sneaky commuters will get one warning ticket before having to head to the impound lot.

The City of Vancouver will also be restricting parking on streets around that station, meaning residents may have to purchase parking permits and parking meters may line busy shopping streets.

Canada Line officials said there is no need — and no room — for park-and-ride stations.

The stations connect with transit and are mostly in high-density urban areas that have no space for park-and-ride lots, said Canada Line spokesperson Alan Dever.

The Bridgeport park-and-ride is the exception. The lot is owned and operated by the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation, which owns the adjacent River Rock Casino Resort. Parking spaces will be reserved for 1,200 vehicles during the day and 600 vehicles at night at a cost of $2.

There are certain cultural aspects of Richmond that make these things a bigger problem than in other jurisdictions.

This is based solely on observation. In general, Richmonders are more opportunistic. It will be interesting to watch.
