How dare they take advantage of a massive international spotlight to express an opinion! Yes, it sucks, they're 'ruining' the games, but if we did more to prevent these problems (drugs, poverty, homelessness, etc. The PETA thing is just their typical bullshit, I expect Greenpeace will get in on it too eventually) this wouldn't be happening. The have a point, even if they have a shitty way of trying to get it across. (For example, vandalizing a clock isn't doing anyone a favour.)

I agree that PETA is a crazy violent organization. Not as bad as Greenpeace but I wouldn't say they're helping anything with what they do. They create controversy and offend people, leading people to believe that all vegetarians or all people who care about animals are lunatics when that isn't the case. I think they hurt animals and vegetarians more than they help them, and reactions like this agree.

(BTW, that is also available in T-shirt form.)

as for how we need more oppression so as to silence this, well...
how about we let people who disagree with us voice their beliefs?? is that really SO difficult.
i am not a peta supporter, but the comments i read on this thread are ridiculous.... juvenile... completely reactionary....
i am not against ethical treatment of animals its just that peta preeches terrisym to get their message across witch is condoning terisym

Can't VANOC or the IOC sue PETA for using their copyrighted intellectual property (mascots/inuckshuk logo)?

Parody is generally considered fair use.

i'm confused. how can Vanoc go after a restaurant in the west end with the word "olympic" in its name but it doesn't do anything against Peta for this?

Peta has fundraising goals and they are going to milk this 100%. it's amazing how much misinformation there is out there about the seal hunt. most specifically showing "whitecoats" being killed. That practice was banned in 1987.

either way, add Peta to the long list of protestors. we'll have the homeless protestors, aboriginal land claim protests, greenpeace i'm sure and probably dozens and dozens more. who cares. but the nice thing is this is canada. you are free to protest in your zone and good luck.

we heard squat about China last year and given their track record, i'm not concerned this is going to make any impression on vancouver. besides, once the media arrives it's going to be pretty clear that an event that happens 7,000km away really has no bearing on what we do here.

this is not from Peta but thought it was hilarious. the big bad olympics are coming! LOL

oh and boycott Maple Syrup??? LOL!! from Peta's website;
"And there's even more that every individual can do to help seals. Boycott a product that is vital to Canada's economy: maple syrup. haha. i guess a boycott on our oil is out of the question?
quebec produces nearly all of our maple syrup so this would only end up hurting a select group of quebec farmers and no one else.

Alex is right, parody is fair game. It's not quite as clear-cut as if an editorial cartoonist altered the images but it's close enough to scare off VANOC lawyers.

Yeah, no more Mr. Nice Canada!

But seriously, I don't think anything could have less to do with Vancouver, or the Olympics, than baby seals.

No, we wub them.

Those pics of the mascots remind me of the yeti with the spiked club batting at the penguins.
