Hey everyone,

Just wondering if anyone has ever been to the Tom Thumb Mini Golf at Fort Edmonton. Is it any good? How does it compare to others in the city? I'm looking for the best one outside of WEM.

It is fun (on a date or with kids) but is not a real mini golf course.

Edmonton housing starts fall again

EDMONTON — The pace of homes going up in the Edmonton region slowed in May compared to last year.

Contractors in the Edmonton region started 346 homes during May — a 40.9 per cent drop from the 586 units started a year earlier, show preliminary figures released Monday by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

It marked the fifth straight month of year-over-year declines in 2009. So far this year, a total of 1,462 homes were begun across the capital region, down 59.2 per cent from May to June 2008.

That’s on course to meet the CMHC spring forecast that housing starts in the Edmonton census metropolitan area will fall by 51 per cent to 3,250 units by the end of the year. In 2008, the Edmonton region recorded 6,651 total starts. In 2007, it was 14,888.

Even single-detached starts, which rose 16 per cent year-over-year in April, lost ground last month. Builders started work on 242 single homes in May, down 12 per cent from a year ago. In the multiple-family housing market, 104 units were started in May, down 67 per cent from May 2008.

“CMHC’s current forecast calls for 1,250 multi-family starts in 2009 compared to 4,002 units in 2008, reflecting developer concerns over unsold condominium properties and rising rental apartment vacancies,” said the federal agency’s senior Edmonton market analyst Richard Goatcher.

Housing starts in Alberta’s seven biggest cities totalled 962 units in May, a decrease of 61 per cent from May 2008. In metropolitan Calgary, a total of 480 homes started, down by 67.7 per cent.

Across Canada, housing starts rose more than expected in May compared to April, with increased construction seen in both single- and multiple dwelling sectors.

The seasonally adjusted annual rate of starts increased to 128,400 units during the month from 117,600 in April, CMHC said.

“Housing starts are expected to improve throughout 2009 and over the next several years to gradually become more closely aligned to demographic demand, which is currently estimated at about 175,000 units per year,” CMHC said.

Economists expected housing starts to total 126,000 units in May.

whether the sidewalks are absolutely necessary or not is only one part of the where you want to walk design/friendliness quotient...

it's also bicycle friendly...

closer to home, one could look at rice howard way and ask whether it's a place "without sidewalks" or a a place "without a street". it's how we program and use what's presented - and what we expect or demand that it does - that really matters.

For anyone who's got Google Earth, they've just done a massive model update. Just about everything I've done is now included from the Riverboat to the RAM.

There are a few really recent ones still missing, and the Edmontonian, Aurora and Central Pentecostal Tabernacle are all included when they shouldn't be. Other than that it's the most complete and error free that it's been in forever.

Excellent work, newfangled, it looks awesome. Thanks for the heads up, as well.

After seeing the models integrated into the skyline, man do I ever hope The Edmontonian and Aurora go. Lousy CCA (if I'm correct in assuming it's holding back The Edmontonian).

I think the market is holding back the Edmontonian.

^ market yes, and that The Edmontonian would be one of the largest projects the developer has embarked upon. Building 4-5 storey condos is a 'tad' different than a 40-something storey building.

I'd rather see BCM's mysterious Corner1 tower go up before the Edmontonian anyways. That area has more potential in the near term.

BTW, will the other jail ever move out of downtown? the federal min security right by the valley?

That seems like such a waste of one of our best pieces of land in downtown Edmonton with such spectacular views.

how about seeing it redeveloped as the canadian pavilion for expo 2017 with both cable car and lrt access to the main site in kinnard park/riverside golf course with something like this crossing the river but taking lrt as well?

maybe as one of the legacy buildings it could incorporate a community centre and elementary and secondary school space to support the quarters?

Calgary is tied for 5th.

Where do you think Edmonton would rank if it were evaluated? Similar to Calgary? As with the Mercer index, their reason for not evaluating Edmonton is that it is so similar to Calgary, therefore can we assume Edmonton could be in the top 10?

I'd say top 20 is possible.

would be a great idea to have a k-9 school there...along with a community centre.
