Speaking of which, does anyone know when/if/where Bistro Praha is going re-open post-arson-fire? That was my 2nd fav. downtown restaurant and I want it back.

^they welcome spring... they brighten up areas... even if for a short period.

I absolutely love being in van or seattle when they bloom... there are festivals build around them... city pride... they are symbolic gestures.

i had an opportunity to tour it yesterday (the aga, not 3 bananas) and the exterior doesn't do justice to some of the interior spaces (and that's a compliment, not a shot...).

some of the city views from the second floor are nothing short of spectacular as you take everything in from century place and chancery hall to the westin to the the telus towers to scotia and manulife and city centre and allstream - a pretty fantastic urban streetscape surrounding sir winston churchill square and the city hall fountains/plaza...

some of the photographs that will be taken from and not just of this building will do wonders for edmonton's reputation.

I'll be getting a tour of the inside of new AGA in the next couple week or so. Can't wait. I'll take pictures if I'm allowed...

Is that the one with the Hookah Bar? If that's the case, I heard mid-July.

1. Plant more cherry blossom trees and those purple bushes. They give such a welcome reprieve from the harshness of the concrete jungle and take attention away from other blights. Make a deal with a sister city in Japan, get 1000 of them put here on entrance routes, key areas, and places needing some 'color'.

2. BP's lands - simply put the key to our core IMO. It is such a donut hole disconnect for the downtown and truly is a barrier both visually and mentally. Bp's can stay for now... but we truly need a rather unique mixed use development there on the other 3/4 of the property with office space, educational space, residential, and retail... designed in an open manner so as to perhaps create a focal point that invites people on jasper avenue into it. Another 1000 people living there with say another 2000 working would truly be the 1st real step in connecting the downtown and its various microareas.

3. Arena/hotel/casino/entertainment centre - nuff said

4. Rice Howard Way revival... move over CCR make room for RHWR. Take this opportunity to make a truly special area of the core. Whether that means limiting cars more or putting some more interesting/viable businesses in there, do it... do it now... and let's make it a focal point of the city versus a mediocre hit and miss cross-hair of the core.

5. Norquest expansion - We have seen the plans... let's pray funding can be obtained for their new north building which will not only fill another ugly parking lot but bring in more people of all varieties to the core. Fast track their 3rd and 4th expansion plans so that entire block is revived with some public interaction areas/services and create another node for the downtown to expand out from.

I think most of yours is bang on. I also like something done to the building next to Epcor center and also as someone else mentioned, more development on 104 street north of 102 Avenue.

I wouldn't mind getting rid of those ugly buildings on Jasper and 108 street inclding the country bar there. It just looks too darn ugly. The new Professional building will help the look, but we somehow need to raze all those buildings next to Audreys and put something pleasant looking there.

Compared to 5 years ago, downtown has made some headways. It used to be pretty bland here and now things are shaping up a bitmore, but a lot more is needed as well. We now need to connect the dots and make it an experience that begins with the majestic AGA building through Churchill and RH Way onto the 4th street passed the "missing area" onto the leg grounds.

As for coffee news downtown, right now 3 Bananas is definitely the best (I think Axis is pretty good), but what out for Credo Coffee opening soon at the Icon towers. The person running it is Geoff, the old manager at 3 Bananas and he sure knows his coffee. Having said all that, I think right now the best coffee in Edmonton is at Transcend on 99 street and 62 avenue, but I never understood why such a great coffee shop would pick such an odd industrial location for such a high end product. They should be in downtown or Whyte or both in my opinion.

^Hehe, I actually think I figured out what Cold meant a few days ago.

"move over CCR make room for RHWR"

CCR = Creedence Clearwater Revival

RHWR = Rice Howard Way Revival

so in essence move over Creedence Clearwater Revival (band) and bring on the Rice Howard Way revival.

Hope that helps.

/\ Any idea of what sales are like on the first tower (the name escapes me)? Something that might give us an idea of when we'll see dirt move for it.

And on the site plan, which tower is it exactly?

Central is the tower. It is located between the two northerly towers slightly to the west if I am not mistaken.

Drove by them today as well... looking really good. Central will be a key in making that site go from mall to community IMO.

I hear they're looking for another location( maybe on 104 st) because of the sale of the building, and how long that may take to be resolved.

Coun. Iveson just had a baby (Congrats) and has a very enlightening yet simple take on urban design.

Way to go Don!

---------------------------------
A Lego Urban Design Primer
JUN
08
2009
Sarah and I were at the store picking up some things for the newborn, and I wandered over to the Lego section to see what the latest ridiculous theme lines were (something went wrong between Castle Lego and Star Wars Lego, in my view). It just so happens that they have released a line that feels like what I grew up with in the ’80s: the City series.

Although he won’t be old enough to play with it for a few years (he’s two weeks old today) I bought Dexter the ‘City Corner’ set, which just so happens to be a superb example of sound urban design.

Notice first the mixed use development, where people can live and work in the same spot, in this case there is residential use above the pizzeria. Almost every truly vibrant place has a mix of land uses, as opposed to segregated uses where people live in one district, work in another, and shop in yet another, etc.

Second, it’s an active street, featuring the following:

Sidewalks: you would think these go without saying, but think of the streets you know without sidewalks, and I guarantee you’re thinking of a place you wouldn’t want to walk. Notice that it’s cycle friendly as well.
Effective transit: I’m assuming because Lego is European that the transit is frequent and reliable, which makes this spot an appealing point of origin for people who live here, and an easy-to-access destination for visitors. (I added the pantograph to the bus, figuring that if it’s European it also ought to be electric.)
Defined edge: a line of buildings built to the sidewalk, which join to form a street wall which defines the space. (I’ll need to dig out some of my classic Lego to add some more buildings to really bear this out, which I probably won’t have time to do until Dexter is talking.)
Active building frontages: the businesses themselves contributes to a positive pedestrian environment; however, the presence of commercial activity is not sufficient in and of itself. To make it work, the frontage must be permeable (the businesses are inviting and accessible from the street) and fine-grained (in that the individual business frontages are not too wide, therefore offering many options to strollers and contributing a sense of rhythm to the street).
Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED, or ’sep-ted’ as we say): part of the benefit of having activity at all hours, which comes more easily with mixed use, is having ‘eyes on the street‘ which helps deter crime. Notice also the lighting on the buildings, which eliminates dark corners. For bonus points, the lighting is all downward casting, which reduces light pollution (which is light waste when you think about it) and is generally more energy efficient.
The only missing things I can think of are: secure bike parking, renewable micro power generation, public art, and a bit of green space. All in all, still a surprising example of a “place worth caring about” in the words of urbanist James Howard Kunstler.
