I just feel like there was all this hype, and promises. Now all there is silence. We need this to happen. Look at our downtown. There are not many really nice buildings. Regina has way more classy looking glass buildings.

At the very least they could start moving some dirt around to give us a sign. Waiting another month or two for ground braking is stupid.

yeah exactly! our downtown is still is in the 20th century, i think people around here need to wake up a bit, because look at this place, how do u expect people to come here and to expect this place to grow? how is it really booming? our university looks better than downtown, why not give things a try even if they get put on hold for some reason?, at least this place will be known to take risks but right now this is horse****!!!!!!

River Landing is still moving forward. Financing has been secured, and sales for Phase 2 will start soon. There will be some news and articles on this in a couple weeks. There are a lot of hoops to get through for a project this big.

I'm curious why you even care what happens here kiwi4life, afterall you think Saskatoon is a "gay place haha" when talking to the Calgary chaps in the Bow construction thread.

I think if the 2nd Ave. Lofts were able to actually get finished with people living in them, then there's more than enough hope from me that River Landing will be built as well

the reason i called it a gay place is bc i expressed my anger, bc this place is ridiculous trying to get something going, when everybody say's "ohh this place is booming" but where? the only place i see it is in the housing sector eltho that has slowed a bit its still alright. And another reason i can't even find an employer that will take me for an apprenticeship when i have outstanding work ethic and love to build things. Therefore ya this place is kinda gay right now, and ive lived here for 7 yrs but there are still the same lies i keep hearing. so ya thats why i called it gay, and ill speak my opinion if i want. I like saskatoon and all but exactly how can u attract people to the worst downtown ive ever seen in my life. considering ive been to cities like Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Winnipeg, LA, Seattle, Auckland New Zealand, Denver etc, and many more small places. Thats just what i think, and untill i see something happen and some change then my opinion will change a bit, the really only good looking thing downtown is the parks and the river and they make a bit of a better looking appearance but we need more here.

This is not construction related at all but I am absolutley repulsed by your selection of words. Being a homosexual man I am completley insulted by this. It is people with your ignorance that make my life and other peoples lives miserable. Using "gay" as a reference to something terrible is narrow minded and disrespectful. Maybe next time before you open your big mouth you will think twice about it and for all I care and for all everyone probably cares you can take your opinions back to Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver etc. and stick them where we can't read them

Gee...I thought maybe the gay reference was because Saskatoon was 'recently' named among the most 'gay-friendly' cities in Canada (can't remember where I saw that, but am sure I did)!

Hey dudes, let's not get into a forum on discrimination and inequities. Let's try and keep our comments from being derogatory in any way. Stick to construction and infrastructure issues.

I for one love Saskatoon and its ever growing diversity, which in my opinion absolutely contributes to the quality of life in this great city. I also don't feel the lack of high rises necessarily means our downtown is inferior to other cities (i.e. Regina, Calgary, etc.). Our street level facades are certainly very interesting (i.e. 21st street, 2nd ave, 3rd ave). It has been noted before that if you have a downtown core monopolized by highrises and towers, it creates a very cold (literally and figuratively) ambiance. I think a good mix of what we have with a few outstanding buildings will greatly enhance Saskatoon.

Open for debate....

I work for Lake Placid and I can provide an update as a response to all of this cynicism. For all of those people that did not see our full page ad in the Star Phoenix on May 23, we will commence construction this summer.
People need to remember that a project of this scale requires months of planning before any execution can take place. We also needed legislative amendments to take place. We are now ready to begin, having already invested 10's of millions in this project, and you will see progress in the coming weeks.

We truly believe that once this project is built it will change the city of Saskatoon. Many of our believers have already put down deposits on residences in River Landing Village. Our early believers will be rewarded as the prices are subject to change as progress is made. Please stay positive and supportive as this monumental project moves forward!

I think most of us feel this way and it's why we're all anxious to see it get going .

Industrial land development is another indicator of Saskatoon's booming economy. I haven't toured the north end for awhile, but I found time to drive around there last week. I may try and find time to snap some photos because it is quite impressive, many of the buildings are built on speculation...and in various stages of construction. As well, many of the buildings are occupied by mining/manufacturing/construction companies (new players to Stoon and some locals expanding)...that says a lot about the state of our local economy, and more importantly where it is headed.

In reply to kiwi4life, be patient, urban development takes time and especially so in Stoon. Our city doesn't experience tremendous growth often, and as a result, there is much more planning and pre-construction details to work out (e.g. amending provincial legislation to allow for strata units).

And don't forget, we have all witnessed the demolition of many older buildings (you may call it progress) for the sake of temporary gravel parking lots (site of future developments), good or bad, it is another indicator of where Saskatoon is headed.

Approaching 300k in 4-5 years...imagine the road congestion we can expect to come along with that growth. It feels like much of our inner city/north industrial roadways are becoming, or are already severely gridlocked at rush hour (is also steadily increasing its duration).

The north end is by far the most chaotic, heavy trucks mixing with commuter traffic...not very nice.

I heard our bicycle network is receiving a measurable cash injection, not sure what we will get out of it though (fully completed city wide network?).

First off I would like to say that I said what I said b/c the ignorant use of certain words can lead to very large problems, apology accepted. Second is that I have spent immense amounts of time around developers, architects, designers, contractors etc. to know that a project of the size of riverlanding is moving along just fine. Saskatoon will never build at the rate of Calgary, we do not have the skilled labour and sheer numbers of workers Calgary has as well our demand for luxury condos and a downtown urban living style is almost null compared to Calgary's.

Saskatoon is at a pivitol point in it's development. Council can shape our city to become the next urban disaster of north america or it could shape it to become the next urban playground (fingers crossed). Hardly anybody born and raised in Saskatoon and SK for that matter has really experienced density which is the very base that is necessary in order to create a vibrant, sustainable and successful urban community.

With our constant population increase the city is changing. I personally hope traffic does worsen and rather then investing millions into wasted roadways, why not upgrade and expand the transit system. Downtown is horrid already for traffic, imagine throwing in another 100 000 people! But also imagine the possibility of having a train that would run say from broadway to downtown to the university. Innovative ideas like this is what will set Saskatoon apart from other cities in western Canada and will help create our own identity. Along with this density will come the highrises and the beautifully constructed office towers.

Our council moves at a snails pace for approving anything, as long as were known as the big city with the small town charm, I feel we will always bear the burden of slow, non inspiring development (minus a few current ones). But with more cosmopolitan citizens calling Saskatoon home and demanding more cosmopolitan amenities we will witness Saskatoon become one of the next urban playgrounds of Canada.
