What LRT in the Valley will look like:

Quote:
A full schedule concept:
20-minute peak period service headways in each direction
60-minute off-peak period service headways in each direction
60-90 minute service headways on Saturdays and Sundays
Weekday service span of 5 AM to midnight
Weekend service span of 7 AM to midnight
Source: SSC

This, btw, is Dallas's RFP Concept Line (it will be a P3) XD

Technically, they could possibly but it would involve new track to connect to the rail bridge as the current turnoff is located right where the station begins. I could see a station going in at Essedene where there is a large parking lot nearby that's mostly unused right now that could be used as the Park & Ride.

It may not be feasible though. I'm not sure what the funding is but I'm sure that Translink does not subsidize the Mission to Port Haney portion of the WCE for obvious reasons. There is little incentive for ValleyMax/BC Transit to cough up additional funding to get the Abbotsford portion running even though half of the commuters do drive in from Abbotsford. I think Abbotsford will be best served by a high speed commuter rail line going down the middle of Hwy 1.

There's also little incentive to increase ridership on a train that can't be expanded to accommodate it. The tracks are leased at expensive rates from CPR.

As for new tracks... I don't see any reason that the train can't just reverse out of the station and into Abbotsford. It's 11km away. I think the big issue is where to keep the trains, as they would need storage tracks there.

Commuter Rail to Abbotsford is a long way down the #1 off and it would likely be through Surrey and Langley, making Abbotsford a "Phase II" location. I wonder which route is better for Abbotsford... and less expensive. When the lease is renewed, we may see interest in taking the train to Abbotsford. At the very least, the ROW should be preserved.

I wonder what they'll say:

"Canada Line to YVR and Richmond-Brighouse"
"Canada Line to YVR and Richmond"

WCE is close to making a profit... when it makes enough profit to add a 6th trip I think it will happen. Then a 7th. Then an 8th. And so on.

My ultimate dream is a 4-car reverse peak hour direction train (the same one that runs Trip #1 WB and Trip #5 EB)... leaving Waterfront Station at 6:45am (basically, as soon as Trip #1 gets into Waterfront, 5 minute layover then off again) getting to Mission 8am, then leaving Mission at 5pm, getting to Waterfront 6:15pm in time to do Trip #5 home.

Has skytrain speed/frequency been increased?

Has anyone noticed whether Skytrain's speed and frequency was increased for the past week, or is it just my imagination?
The train seemed to really speed up between Burrard Station and Waterfront Station. With the old MKI train, it got quite noisy and vibrated so much, I think I am getting motion sickness!
I wonder whether this has something to do with the addition of MKII trains.
For the past 2 Sunday around noon time, trains left Waterfront station almost at a 1~2 minutes frequency.
BTW, has anyone ever ride on the new MKII train #307/308 yet? It seems to have disappeared from sight. Is it in service yet?

late last night at like 2:30 am #305/306 went by on the way to Stadium station at normal speeds. And I have to say the new cars are a little bit quieter in the speed up and slow down phase. Normal running and crossing a switch etc sound the same as the other MKII's......

City of Vancouver and TransLink looking at improving bus service on Hastings Street

Vancouver city council will vote on Tuesday (June 2) on whether or not to create bus-only lanes along Hastings, which could lead to the development of a new express bus route.

In a report to the transportation and traffic committee, staff have recommended westbound bus-only lane during the AM peak period from Boundary Road to Carrall Street.

The report, which was written by assistant city engineer Jerry Dobrovolny, recommends an eastbound bus-only lane in the PM peak period from Seymour Street to Boundary Road.

“The installation of bus lanes in 2009 will simplify the creation of Olympic Lanes along the Hastings corridor in support of the 2010 Winter Olympics,” the report states.

It adds that TransLink would cover the $150,000 cost of creating the lanes.

The report also notes that city officials are working with their counterparts in Burnaby and with TransLink to determine the feasibility of a new 95-B Line express bus route along Hastings Street.

What the hell happened to skytrain today? The broadcasts were inaudible and vague as usual.

SkyTrain had this problem between Joyce and Patterson. Unfortunately, I was stuck at Main St for the longest time.

Quote:
Due to an electronics problem between Joyce and Patterson, SkyTrain is running turnback service between Waterfront and Nanaimo stations and between Metrotown and King George stations. A shuttle is running on the outbound track between Metrotown and Nanaimo. Service along the Expo Line will be delayed significantly because of this. The Millennium Line is running segregated service -- i.e. between VCC-Clark and Columbia stations. Customers travelling between downtown Vancouver and Surrey or south Burnaby/New West stations may want to transfer at Broadway/Commercial to the Millennium Line and change trains at Columbia: it may be faster that way

Prepare for serious SkyTrain delays tonight

Vancouver Sun
June 2, 2009 7:04 PM

An electronics problem between Joyce and Patterson is causing serious delays on the SkyTrain service tonight.

TransLink says there is a a turnback service between Waterfront and Nanaimo stations and between Metrotown and King George stations. Service along the Expo Line is significantly delayed.

Commuters at Waterfront station are currently being told to leave and catch the bus because service won't be starting anytime soon.

Customers travelling between downtown Vancouver and Surrey or south Burnaby/New West stations may want to transfer at Broadway/Commercial to the Millennium Line and change trains at Columbia.

Those are all Americans who had heard that the high temperature for the day would only be about 26 degrees!
