Saint John in good shape: Economist
May 22, 2009 - 5:19 pm
By: News 88.9 Staff

MONCTON - Energy is the big story for New Brunswick in an outlook presented today by noted economist Peter Hall.

The Vice President and Chief Economist for Export Development Canada said the province is not immune to what's going on globally, and will see exports decline by up to 27% in the coming year.

But hall said Saint John will be ahead of the game in 2010 because of some of the exciting energy projects it has going on.

"There's some good things going on, they were in the pipeline before this started to happen," he said.

"The investment projects are substantial and they're going to tied the province through it for sure."

Hall said these projects should shield Saint John from the worst by acting as advance stimulus packages.

Paul Darius should not be allowed to buy buildings in saint john, in fact all of his properties should be confiscated by the government. The man has no clue on how to fix up a building, the one he owns on Germain has had a gaping hole in the side for 5 years, and the paramount closed like what 1 maybe 2 years ago, Darius has already done 10 years worth of damage to the interior ripping out anything he can sell.

He can do a good job when the right project comes along. The SNB building is a quality project.

yes but we lost the odeon under his ownership, he just seems to bite of more than he can chew, and often doesn't care about anything other than making a quick buck

I'm not overly senitmental about the Paramount and think Art Deco isn't really Saint John's tourist appeal; so I honestly don't disagree with his strategy on the Paramount. It would be better if he took it down, than waiting for it to fall though.

I think with the Paramount Land, strip club and parking lot (and maybe the Irving building on the corner), and awesome development site would be available and attractive.

I think it would be grand if he repurposed and maintained the buildings he buys up, but sometimes holding and parking are the best uses owners can come up with.

Until Long Wharf, I had thought this area would be perfect for the new Irving HQ, complete with parking garage. It still has the same potential tho.

For me the critical element to revitalize downtown is to get a lot more (and afluent) people living downtown. I've always thought that would be a great location for a high rise condo. Main bus stop at the front door, 100 yards from the market, walking to Brunswick Square and other office buildings downtown. Put 3 floors of parking on the lower level and all units would have great views and light. Also minimal impact on historical buildings, although some would have issue on building height I'd expect everyone wants to see this abandoned building retasked/replaced.

You're a star maker. You mention Darius and he shows up in the paper: http://telegraphjournal.canadaeast.com/city/article/682570

He was awarded the most recent teardown contract for Peel Plaza.

With a foot print that size a building that mimics the Admirable Beaty's exterior could fit in and possibly lucrative.

Reversing falls

Interesting little news story on CBC radio today talked about a hypothetical new bridge crossing the harbour at the reversing falls. The new crossing would incorporate new water distribution capacity for the planned upgrade to the city water system.
It was noted that the proposal was an unsolicited design by firms contracted by the city to study the new water system.
This can probably fall into the 'not in our lifetime' category of projects but it would be neat to see the plans regardless.

I believe it was the city manager who was quoted as saying that the new crossing is unlikely as bridges are very expensive things to build.

I think the garage is great. The best part of Peel Plaza in my opinion.

The only problem I have is the lack of ability to add to the top. They were saying as it is, only three additional floors could be added. I think to keep the costs down, they should find a developer to add an apartment building to the top, and improve the structure to accomodate extra floors. Ppl like to throw out the term sustainability, well that would make it sustainable.
