Okay that may be a bit harsh, but this happens every year. Some uptight straight folks get their knickers in a knot about the 'moral depravity' happening on city streets without having the faintest clue what the event is all about, while conveniently ingoring all of the other things that sourround us daily that are far more suggestive.

I can walk down Whyte in the middle of summer and see more skin than at the Pride parade. (Not that I'm complaining)

Anyways, back on the construction topic, I had another meeting at the airport this morning. It sounds like (and this has yet to be confirmed) that they may be pulling down the old tower after all. From the drawings I've seen, the new tower will land right in the centre of the building, with the entrace being at the escalators to departures in the area where the fireplace is now, and the tower will extend all the way to the front of the building with the new control tower on top.

It is possible that they're talking about just removing the control tower and leaving the admin. It's still a bit vague. The timeline is tight... bids going up in September, and a two year turnaround for the whole expansion. This is good for the local labor situation as everyone who knows they are involved is manning up to get ready for an accelerated schedule.

^^ Well that's a relief. The city has done some pretty awful asphalt patch work in other places.

I'm not going to go all overboard about how 'Railtown is a horror' or 'Perigrine Pt yadda yadda' all those buildings serve their purpose but it's plainly obvious that many of the the condo buuldings built in the past while are fairly inferior in design, and yes even quality. Yet the prices for these units were astronomical so you'll pardon me if I don't shed a tear for the poor developers that were only able to scrape together a crummy pre-fab tilt-up midrise for $550/ sf.

i've been thinking about this a bit since you posted it and am still not prepared to take the buyers "off the hook". to keep that in perspective i don't think you have or will find me "defending peregrine point yadda yadda" as a result. if i was to start by looking at your example, you may not sell a chiller that "can't deliver the tonnage" but if that customer asks enough vendors, he will end up finding one that will. and if there are enough customers that are prepared to accept the fact that what they are purchasing won't provide the kind of performance they should be acquiring, then they will keep vendors like that in business. they will go out of business - or start delivering better product - when the market takes them there. that won't be your fault, but my point is that it won't entirely be the fault of the vendor that made the sale either. that customer was an willing participant in the transaction - even if he may regret it later - and enough of them will be "equal drivers" in the marketplace. it's the same on a car lot - it doesn't matter that the manufacturer is capable of - and in many cases does - manufacture superb automobiles if the purchasers insist on purchasing the "not-so-superb" portions of the product range even if that is as much a matter of financial constraints as actual preference. as with the condo/rental apartment, there is certainly the question of education and knowledge and changing priorities but you can't force the market to purchase what they are not able ot prepared to pay for. the onus and the obligation to "move" the market is a shared one.

Just to clarify, when you say "centre of the building" you're referring to the original terminal building, right?

That's correct.

I forgot to mention in my origial post that they're also building a new central utilities plant which will be up & running at the same time as the terminal. That place is going to be insane for the next two years.


It's too bad I didn't have my camera with me today. I was on the roof at Northlands... the view of downtown is very nice from that angle. I'll try to remember for tomorrow as I have to go back

^Looks like the abandoned apartment building south of the BP's on 124 Street is going to be converted into retail with some apartment uses. Interesting.

^ sweet, its a long time coming. Hopefully they do a good job, I've noticed a few of the storefront improvements along 124th havent been the best. Slap up some stucco, paint and an awning and yer good to go. That being said the reno of the office just north of the Roxy theatre is really well done. Too bad its an office though.
