talk about losing the trees for the forest - for starters i'd keep scona pool open and tidy up a bit of outstanding housekeeping. then i'd set aside some endowment funds for the ongoing operation of things like our pools and parks so it all wouldn't have to come out of property taxes every year.

then i'd look at how to make sure that money would get matching funds from the province and the feds.

then i'd look at a new top of bank to top of bank bridge for 100 million, "do" jasper avenue and the quarters infrastructure for 25 million, put 75 million into a new arena, put 25 million into villenueve and another 25 million into relocating general aviation from muni and shutting it down for future development, partner with the province and our post secondary institutions etc. on securing expo 2017 and use it's leverage to create a legacy with the remainder that would include a new museum and lrt enhancements/extensions, maybe some housing for the u of a and for nait, service the south campus lands and relocate the province out of neil crawford centre back downtown and move the u of a in... maybe finish sir winston churchill square and provide some endowments for some of the business improvement districts that would make them less dependent on tax monies and local levies...

Wow, that would be the quick route to failure if I ever saw one. SPR is fine, but 170 St? Yeah, so transit friendly, walkable, and TOD-able. Clearly it should be a low-floor route that stops every 400m there, too.

Interesting facts and conjecture:

-The lot between the Prince of Wales Armoury and the Polish Hall will soon be home to 140 polish seniors in a 3 story building, followed later by a few hundred more polish seniors in a couple of 8-story towers. There will be construction this summer.

-U of A is considering building more Garneau Walkups

-There may be something happening at the bottom of the old TD tower on Jasper, in the near future.

Slightly offtopic but I was just going to comment on Edmonton Pride Week 2009.. Anyone know what kind of events are lined up for this year aside from the parade on June13?
I think its great that it grows so much each year, and should continue to do so as it shows how much diversity and livelihood the city has. Not to mention bringing even more life to downtown even if just for a weekend.
I know ill be attending for sure.

Recession pricing boosts city projects
Council moves full speed ahead on redevelopment plans, roadwork with $600M savings as costs fall dramatically

Gordon Kent
The Edmonton Journal

Thursday, May 28, 2009

City councillors approved Wednesday a major boost in construction work over the next three years, using more than $600 million saved mainly by price drops caused by the worldwide recession.

The unexpected reduction in costs will allow the city to do extra road paving and neighbourhood renewal, build connections to the northwest Anthony Henday Drive, create parks, kick-start the Boyle Renaissance downtown redevelopment and expand work on Whitemud Drive.

City manager Al Maurer said the reduction in prices was more than the entire capital budget a few years ago, and even larger than the savings that happened when Alberta's last big boom in the 1970s gave way to the downturn of the 1980s.

Construction prices that last fall were expected to rise by 13 per cent are now likely to go down by as much as 15 per cent.

Although some councillors were concerned their priorities weren't reflected in the $5.6-billion plan released by the administration last week, Coun. Bryan Anderson said this was better than letting the politicians push for projects in their areas.

"When you have an economy that offers up the ability to do more work for less, I would rather have the administration weigh all the advantages and disadvantages and come up with a way to deal with this."

Councillors added $8.2 million to the budget to pave 34th Street from 23rd Avenue to Anthony Henday Drive, and also agreed to borrow $30 million to match similar contributions from the provincial and federal governments for LRT upgrades.

One reason the budget was down was a $39.3-million drop, to $71.9 million, in the province's 2009 municipal sustainability grant as the government deals with low oil and gas prices.

Coun. Dave Thiele was upset the city won't receive as much as planned. "A promise is a promise. We can't keep deciding our budget based on promises that aren't lived up to."

A report in September will outline further expected price reductions.

Taking to the street on 118th Ave.
Community leaders, police kick off campaign to raise area's image

Constable Shane Brennan, left, in the More Than Cigars store on 118th Avenue at 96th Street, chats with Robyn Ferlyko about the We Believe in 118 Campaign, a new business block captain initiative.

Barber shops, small bistros, restaurants and a few deserted-looking places with tinted windows are among some of the businesses and buildings that sit along 118th.

People can be seen on every block. Sometimes it's just a couple of individuals sitting on a ledge at the side of the road, looking out into the street.

But as the sun sets, things change, says Sunil Pereira, a customer at the Cafe Bistro on 118th Avenue.

"It's not a safe place to be at night," he said.

Darrell Jensen, an employee at the Shoppers Drug Mart at the corner of 118th and 95th Street, shares this sentiment.

"This is not an easy situation to control," he said, referring to prostitution and illegal drugs in the area.

It is this negative image that led members of the Edmonton community to launch the "We Believe in 118" campaign Wednesday.

"We're trying to tell people that this is a safe place in which to work," said Kris Andreychuk, a community service social worker with the neighbourhood empowerment team, one of the groups that initiated the campaign.

"We are celebrating the vibrancy of the community," said Andreychuk, adding that the campaign is an innovative way to reduce crime in the area.

Members of the empowerment team, police, the Alberta Avenue Business Association, and the city's bylaw services, walked into businesses along 118th Avenue on Wednesday afternoon to inform them about the campaign.

The first stop on their list was More Than Cigars at 9610 118th Ave. Manager Robyn Ferlyko said she is glad the city is running the campaign.

"It's working together toward a safer community," she said.

The group gave all the business owners window stickers with "We Believe in 118" written on them.

They will also recruit block captains--business owners who would act as the "go to" people for all the other businesses on a particular block should a problem or concern arise.

The block captains would provide a direct link between the businesses in the area and the police, Const. Andrew Larson said.

The avenue has a "stigma of negativity," he said. "We would like to bring more people into the area to enjoy what it has to offer."

Giving 118th Avenue a new look and a positive reputation is a little complicated, Jensen said.

"It's a no-win situation" because they'll just push drug dealers and prostitutes to another neighbourhood, he said.

Const. Shane Brennan said he wants the community and the business owners to know that the police support them and are trying to create a safer place to live, work and play. "I eat down here and do all kinds of things down here," said Brennan. "It's grassroots, vibrant; it's what you see is what you get."

In line with the revitalization of 118th, a new farmers market opens this week on Thursday. About 30 vendors will sell goods such as soups, salsas, breads, and desserts. Art, crafts, jewelry, and other accessories will also be sold.

That's the kind of life downtown can do without. Men dancing around in skimpy underwear in sexually suggestive kind of ways. Why the hell is that allowed on my streets? And why do people take their kids to see this?

You must live an exciting life. Your entitled to your prudish attitude but don't disparage others for participating in an event that is extremely well attended (by folks from all walks of life) and brings an incredible amount of visibility to downtown. Those aren't only 'your' streets, And lots of people take thier kids 'cause, you'know, it's a good thing for kids to become aware of the world around them so they don't grow up to be racists, bigots, etc.

The Edmonton pride parade is extremely tame compared to other events in other cities. You won't see anytihng at this parade that you wouldn't see on cable TV or at something like a Mardis-gras celebration. So please, cut it out with the self-serving double standards.

Thanks for the perspective but I still don't think it's a family friendly event.

You should've left your post unedited because now you're bordering on accusing me of being a racist or bigot.
