Hmmm... I don't recommend flying out often on mid-week 6am flights. Once or twice, maybe... but after that and friends may come up with ways to be busy at 4:30am.

Mid-day flights can be tough too, if your friends are working during the day.

It's an example of how in North America we still don't ghet it when it comes to providing transit to our airports.

There will still be buses to South Terminal running out of Bridgeport Station.
I don't see a problem with making it a Zone 3 fare. That's a fair premium for direct to airport service on a dedicated line.

Other zones are delineated by water.

That being said, I don't know how they're going to distinguish between passengers coming from Long-term parking (free) and people coming from Bridgeport. Unless they have special tickets at the Long-term parking. But in that case, you could just get off the train there, grab a free ticket and catch the next train.

Given the hassle (especially with luggage) I think people will just pay the extra fare.

Sorry, but I disagree. But then, I've never liked Vancouver's zone system, it's actually quite unfair. Making Sea-Island a zone three is just a cash grab.

A direct express train to the airport, like Heathrow Express - yes, fine. It's dedicated for the airport.

But Canada Line is just a subway line. Airport passengers get to stand with the rest of the crowds.

London Underground Piccadilly Line to Heathrow has no special fares for the airport. Most European cities connect their airports to the city with trains, trams, subway or LRT and no "premium" fares are charged to get to the airport.

Even in Tokyo, there were two options, an express that could get you to downtown Tokyo from Narita in half an hour for about $20, or take the regular subway in an hour for about $5.

A premium service should be something comfortable like a single level version of the West Coast Express and express service to Broadway and downtown only.

I'm going to repost something I said earlier in this thread (to you)...

Quote:
Ridership to YVR from Vancouver is likely (okay, definitely) going to be lower than ridership to Richmond from Vancouver. Translink has to make up for the shortfall (assuming they provide similar levels of service) somehow - and if it didn't come from the people who actually use that route it would come from other routes.

Not to mention that demand for fast, convenient airport service is likely very inelastic with regards to price so this is probably a good way to recoup their losses without much ridership loss.
Do you want people who are using this line to pay for it or should all Translink users pay for it? I don't see any problems with charging more for a line/branch/whatever that costs more per user.

who needs marking, who needs to knwo where the roads are anyways, good drivers fly, bad drivers die.

But YVR is the one who gets the extra money (to pay for their contribution in building the line). If they don't charge the premium fare, translink would have to pay the airport for each passenger travels to the airport, that mean the actual revenue is probably like $0.75 for people traveling from Vancouver...

I thought that contribution was voluntary and funded by the hated AIF.

those cities have direct non stop service via other trains though

it is stupid to charge more for sea island but its not that bad - i know gatwick to vic station is close to $25 for the "express" or you can take a regular train for about $5 or so

I agree. If our Airport trains are somehow an express service, then fine I can understand why it's more expensive... Having said that, our line will probably be cheap compared to most other metro systems to airports (from city centre).

Have they decided if the airport will be a premium fare? I thought it was just under consideration? I agree it is an unfair cash grab, but if the airport is Zone 3 it will still be a lot cheaper than London or Tokyo. London's Underground from Heathrow to Piccadilly and it costs about $10 one way. DKaz your price is way off, I just got back from Tokyo and the cheap train from Narita was $12 + a fare on the Metro.

The part about the Piccadilly Line is true, but just like in Vancouver, its in a different travel zone. It's in Zone 6, meaning its about $7 fare from central London. And passengers are mixed in with other travellers just like on the Canada Line. And really, people going to YVR aren't going to be on the train more than 15-20 minutes. Not to mention its not like you're standing holding your bags, you can put them on the ground!

Another thing, the time between Waterfront and YVR is about the same as it'll take you to get to Heathrow via the Heathrow Express, yet that costs 17 pounds ($30). Even the Heathrow Connect is about $12 and takes half an hour and runs only twice an hour. Also if you look at getting to other airports in London, Gatwick Express is about $15 and takes about as long as the Canada Line, Stansted Express is $35 and takes almost 50 minutes! Don't compare to London and the complain about prices.

Also if you look at Berlin, Tegel Airport doesn't even have rail connection and Schoenefeld is in it's own zone. In Frankfurt the airport has its own rate. Schiphol in Amsterdam also has its own fare.

I'll agree that most airport in Europe don't have their own "special fare" but I'd say about 90% of the time they're in the outer most fare zone, usually with just 1 or 2 other stations, essentially making it their own fare zone.

It depends where you are going, really.

From Narita Airport - Shinjuku Station the fares range from 1140 JPY for the "slow" train or 2110 JPY for the "fast" train.

Slow train takes 1hr. 37 min., fast train takes 1 hr. 19 min (appromixately depending on the time of day).
http://www.google.co.jp/maps?f=d&source=...499029,0.954437&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=11&start=4

It would be nice for there to be an express train from YVR - Downtown, but that probably isn't possible now.

i still think people will who come here on holiday will have the transport arranged by the hotel - all the hotels offer a shuttle service for guests plus there is the bus that serves other hotels -you pay more but you travel better

backpackers and locals would be the most likely candidates for using the line

Business travellers will also use the line.

As many others said, it's pretty common for an airport to be in its own zone. Heathrow is a great example.

Newark costed about $9 last time I checked.

As for a $5 fare in Tokyo... I think you may be talking about Haneda airport. it ranges from 500-700 yen.

We're really spoilt in that we have an aiport that's so close to the city.

We really are. Take a look at our neighbour Edmonton that has its airport way off out there. An even more extreme example is Tokyo Narita, man its like a 1 hour train ride to the city from that airport.
