I have often found that it is this kind of infill that really makes a downtown. In Europe, you see this in Frankfurt, Koln and Berlin. The same in London and Birmingham. Paris is like a midrise density that really makes a city feel large.

I think SLC has a Euro potential that can really define a downtown core. Not every thing has to be 40 stories to make a real city.

Sources told The Salt Lake Tribune that an announcement is scheduled for today. Huntsman is in Washington, D.C., and calls to his spokeswoman and various staffers were not returned Friday night.

Huntsman would still have to be confirmed by the Senate, a process that could take weeks or even months. Typically, governors who have been nominated have not resigned until after their confirmation.

I lament the loss of Gov Huntsman. He was doing a terrific job. Hopefully his Lieutenant will carry on with his game plan.
I think it's good for Huntsman should he chose to run for President. If Obama's administration continues as is through the remainder of his term, I think he'd have no problem getting reelected regardless of who runs against him. So 2016 would probably be better for Huntsman.

I doubt it. Mostly because there was no way Huntsman could win the Republican nomination in 2012. He's more liberal than many Democrats and as we've seen from the current Republican Party, they're afraid of anyone to the left of Attila the Hun.

Huntsman might be a threat in 2016 if the Republicans get their act together and move to the middle, but by then Obama -- if he wins reelection -- will be finishing his second term.

If anything, it just removes another moderate from the Republican Party. Now they have what, two? Ha.

Well said. I enjoyed that.
I guess I thought that as the GOP has expressed concern that they need to drastically reinvent themselves for our generation and the one behind us, Huntsman would be the ideal poster boy of the "new republicans." And as he seems to be part of Obama's camp, I figured he'd have a good shot at 2016. I guess we'll see. A lot can change between now and then of course.

3 years is an eternity in politics. The political landscape will be very different by then. I don't worry about the Republicans, they will regroup and put up an effective challenger.

Although, regardless of what the Republicans do, they aren't the biggest threat to Obama. He has to worry about two things: the economy and the Middle East. If the economy is tanking or still sluggish in three years the Republicans could nominate Attila the Hun and still win. I for one am no fan of Obama, but can't wait to see the economy turn around. My guess is Utah and the Intermountain West will rebound a year before large parts of the country. Then we will have more interesting things to discuss here.

I'm very, very disappointed that Huntsman is stepping down. He has been a superb governor, one I'm proud to have cast two votes for. He has been a very effective administrator, and in a state where an elected official can easily ignore the opposition, Huntsman was been open, responsive, and moderate in all his actions. He has accomplished a lot for this state, as evidenced by our stable performance through the financial troubles. I thank him for his service, and congratulate him for his new position. He'll do a bang up job.

I have very little confidence in Gary Herbert's abilities. He spent more than a decade on the toothless Utah County Commission, and I doubt there was much accomplished. I don't think he possesses many of Governor Huntsman's attributes. He's typical Utah County, and a typical republican.

I think this is also bad news for Salt Lake City. Huntsman has been very friendly to the city, compared to other state officials. I hope we don't slide back into the state being openly hostile to the city of Salt Lake.

I think the economy is already turning around. Of course, I can only go by what the economists are saying, but we'll see.

You're right, though, if the economy doesn't turn around, Obama will have a difficult time winning reelection. Of course, Bush won reelection with approval ratings in the 40s, so it's doable.

I don't see the Republican Party rebounding in time to win back the presidency in 2012. I think they're already set on moving further to the right and as the Democrats learned in the 1980s, that doesn't help you much nationally.

With that said, I wouldn't be surprised to see Huntsman run in 2016, specifically if Obama is successful, as being a member of his administration would be an asset rather than a liability, while offering a fresher look after eight years of one-party control.

We'll see, though.

Well 2010 offers us a chance to elect someone else. Not likely, but you never know. I think a named Democrat like Carroon could unseat Herbert.

I've met Corroon, he'a a great guy, but having him as governor scares me.
He would raise taxes wherever possible so he can unnecessarily expand the state government right away, just like he has done in the county. I don't get why Democrats insist on being such wasteful spenders. They would be much better public officials if they'd just knock it off.

The Salt Palace is owned by Salt Lake County and operated by SMG Corp., under contract with the county. Having completed a $58 million expansion in 2006, the Salt Palace now has 675,000 square feet of exhibit and meeting space.
