the setbacks on the north side of the building surprised me as well as the building was taking shape... I don't recall seeing those in the renderings

Some more shots for you guys - I had to go back to get a closer look. I'm loving this building more and more each day; it's just the catalyst that area needs and it establishes a great conversation with the surrounding tall buildings.

Yes, this building, while not tall, is exuding character even unfinished. In my lay-person's parlance, it's snappy, fresh, compact, yet elegant. It is a fine addition to Pittsburgh's very worthy building stock. And I too think it will show how good design and development can enhance and stimulate an area. I think that little square, or intersection, where Fifth meets Liberty will take on new and improved identity.

And again, congrats to all the Steelers fan on the win last night. I would've loved for Philly to have won as well so it would've been a Keystone State Super Bowl, but....

Hopefully someone out of those 500k at the victory parade will have a camera and post some pictures of this building...

Was down in Pittsburgh last week. I am really impressed with this building. The glass is a lot "greener" than some of the original renderings, nevertheless, it works well with the downtown setting and is a fine addition to an already spectacular skyline.

Great pics Dugdogmaster. The first two really showcase what I love so much about Pittsburgh. In the first shot, you captured Pittsburgh's ultra-rich urban fabric. Each building represents a distinct architectural style in a tightly woven context. There's Post-Modern, early 20th century commercial skyscraper, late 19th century brick Italianate (I think) and International. And now, 3 PNC is adding to the scene with a fresh, clean, light and crisp modern contemporary (IMO) design in green glass.

The second shot shows how when clean and modern is placed by the classic, older rusticated stonework of the building to the left, it creats a vibrancy. Old and new blending together beautifully. The old gives the new an even fresher look. The new gives the old a sense of place and history.

I know I say it all the time, but Pittsburgh really has such an interesting cityscape, especially compared to Tampa. We have such crap for buildings. Mostly all 70's, 80's and 90's nothings. Dull as hell. People in Pittsburgh should realized how fortunate they are.

Agreed. Great angles all playing together to create a vibrant texture. It really has to due with Pittsburgh's history going back to the days just after the French and Indian Wars (late 1700's). Once Fort Pitt was no longer necessary as a fully-engaged operations for defence, the small town of Pittsburgh outside the Fort's walls was free to begin growing in earnest. The original street grid was laid out (by Wood, I believe, whose name lives on in Wood Street) with two opposing grids, one along each river shore. The two grids 'mash' together along Liberty Ave, thus creating all those odd angled blocks and intersections. Now, centuries later, the upper stories of Downtown's highrises mark the old grid down at street level with that truly unique, complex and dense skyline. Buildings are seemingly shoehorned into place at every conceivable angle. Compare it to, say, a Houston, where the spacious, unbroken grid stretches for miles. While it's skyline is certainly impressive in height and scope, it doesn't have Pittsburgh's richness.

Well, I grew up and went to college there. It was while going to Pitt and living in Oakland that I really began to appreciate the city. I find its history facinating.

PA Pride requested I post the latest PNC 3 photos from my latest downtown photo thread. It is really adding a nice modern feel downtown with old buildings reflecting into it's glass.

I took the same angle as evergrey. Wasn't trying to copy.

I love how it fits into the line of skyscrapers on Liberty Ave.
