Looks like they are pretty far along, they are starting life-safety testing. That is one of the final steps.

Quote:
Crews are continuing to test the emergency ventilation system along the Canada Line corridor. The next test along Cambie Street will be conducted at King Edward Station and at Broadway-City Hall Station on Thursday, April 16, 2009 from approximately 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. These tests are necessary as part of the Testing and Commissioning stage of the project.

The majority of this testing will be completed underground between the two stations. However, venting fan operation will be required, which may result in some temporary noise at street-level near these station areas.

The public will likely see simulated smoke emanating from station vent shafts at King Edward Station, located at Cambie Street and King Edward Avenue, and at Broadway-City Hall Station, located at Cambie Street and W. Broadway Street in Vancouver. This may result in 911 calls from the public to emergency responders during the testing.

A mist-type of simulated smoke is used during the testing, which is part of controlled systems test, and is only a simulation and no cause for concern.
The underground testing process poses no harm to the public, and the public.

Traffic delays are expected and motorists are advised to use alternate routes

Not really, we're limited by the 3m widths so it's going to make much of a difference. I know the new generation JR trains have 5 instead of 4 doors per car and seats that automatically fold up in rush hour so it's standing room only but the Rotem can easily copy that.

then what about Art Mark II on skytrain? they can move the Mark II to be used in Canada Line.

Of course not... where have you been all this time? Canada Line and SkyTrain cannot be interconnected.

Only because they were built to spec to do so from the beginning. Capacity has little to do with country of origin and has more to do with specifications required.

ah yes, canada line and skytrain can't be interconnected. but i mean if canada line can use the mark II, then that will be great to increase the frequency. because 3 minutes are too less. i think canada line should increase the frequency to 1.5 minutes.

of course, richmond to bridgeport and airport to bridgeport's frequency should be 3 minutes.

Three minutes is not bad considering it's an improvement over the current 98 B-Line + Suburban buses. It's not too bad either. As ridership grows, you can then add frequency. We don't need MKII vehicles to add frequency... we can just order more LRVs from Rotem Korea. Not that this would happen, but we could order from another company like Bombardier too as we are now using conventional train technology, not proprietary SkyTrain.

Make the M-Line 3 minutes before the C-Line. The agony of waiting for an M-Line train to show up at Commercial during non-peak hours is painful.

inTransit is saying that they can only increase the frequency to 2 minutes. I hear that one of the reasons is the steep grades on portions of the line and the need for enough distance between the trains to allow for emergency stopping.

According to Translinks Website both the E & M lines have the same off-peak frequencies 6 minutes.Combimed off-peak frequnecy between Waterfront & Columbia is 3 minutes

The propulsion systems are different between Skytrain & The Canada Line so the mark 2s would not work.

The automated train control systems for both Canada Line and Expo Line / M-Line are by Thales (formerly Alcatel) - so it's the same train control software (probably different versions) and the same train spacing could conceivably be achieved on both lines (despite the different trainsets and different vehicle technology). The initial frequencies on the Canada Line have probably been established in accordance with the expected ridership (rather than wasting energy by running as many as fast as possible).

However, the electromagnetic braking with the LIM motors on Skytrain would probably allow harder stopping (shorter stopping distances) than the steel on steel friction braking for the Canada Line trains. This is probably especially true for weather-exposed guideways in wet or icy conditions and if there are leaves on the rails (in autumn), as there are known braking problems due to "wheel slip" where friction braking is used. So the longer headways may well be required for the Canada Line.

Dunno, one thing that might help capacity would be increasing the speed on the damn trains. Even the yamanote line is faster and that line has really small distances between stations. Is it a safety or technology issue that's limiting the speeds on the trains?

I think the trains themselves have a maximum speed of 80km/h. I don't know about the Yamanote Line but the Chuo Line tops out at 110km/h+ on straight open sections. We should've ordered Japanese trains instead.

Station spacing, passenger comfort, wear and tear and passenger demand on the vehicles also come into play in determining operating speeds.

Just like driving a car, you don't — it and brake, — it and brake, — it and brake - not if you're wanting to save fuel (energy).

The limit of frequency on the Canada Line is not due to braking distances or steep grades, it's due to the single tracking sections which limit it to apprx 2 minutes at capacity. If you got rid of the single tracking you could probably shave that down a little but not too much.

Our trains are nearly identical as those built by Rotem for Athens just before the 2004 Olympics....I really wish we had their interior:

I see no good difference between Athens and ours. Theirs look maybe a little bit better... but the inward facing seats... square looking bars (that we alos have), etc. aren't good enough.
