Well there are 116 votes on the UBC extension forum for skytrain all the way, so one would hope to have 116 supporters on this thread.

there are a lot of intelligent posts on the UBC thread and we sure could use them here. Also for those interested would should think of a preliminary meeting place and date, that is if a good number of people here are willing to do so. if we do have a meeting as a team we could also develop articles for local newspapers and other functions. the more people we have the more likely the facts will be correct.

Quote:
Beyond Alma St. it'd be at grade wouldn't it?
I believe the preliminary plans are to have it at grade or elevated beyond Alma, or a mix of the two.

I heard an interview with a woman from the West Broadway Merchants Association - she said "Kitsilano Village" should have a tram, not a big expensive Skytrain line. The concept of a regional rapid transit line running under 10th Ave, fed by buses or a local tram, was lost on her.

I have modest connections in the Faculty of Science, but I don't think there's going to be any trouble getting students on board, as long as it means benefits without raising tuition.

Anything helps! I really hope to see racc, Mr. X and others on board with this, seeing how Mr. X was involved with organizing the "save the fire works group," and racc seems to be quite knowledgeable about this issue. I hope members on this forum can put our differences over other issues aside and come together and work on this.

When would be a good time to have a meeting, just to see if we can get this thing off the ground and if we have enough support on this forum?

Hahaha sorry to burst your bubble miss, but Broadway is a little bigger than a "village".
I know she means something like "Cambie Village" and "Dundarave Village", but I couldn't resist.

It's time to get vocal and spread the facts, guys. These people need to be properly informed about what it is they want and what it will ultimately get them in the end.
If I was in Vancouver right now, I'd be attending as many as these meeting as possible.

I'd be willing to contribute some time, it's going to be hard to coordinate all of this though with the various schedules we all keep.

I also have a friend who makes superb websites who might be able to put something together for us really quick, but I'm not going to volunteer him w/o permission.

no one would want light rail.

Exactly. They would hate to see no parking lanes!!

Sounds promising, and of course you can not volunteer someone with out permission, for that would be drafting, hehe. But essentially we are all busy, and we all have conflicting schedules, but i am sure if we all chip in a little bit of our time something positive should come out of it.

Even if all we accomplish is 1 letter to the editor or one small assembly at one of the open houses then we will have succeeded.

I think the true point of this is we simply have to do something beyond our complaining on this forum, because if you read the thread many fantastic points, facts and opinions are expressed that should be heard by more than just us, fore lack of a better term, currently we are simply preaching to the converted.

GO! Pro SkyTrain Group! I will be willing to contribute if there's anything I can help. At least I can support the group

I watched Oceans 13 a few nights ago, and I'd say we build the damn line ourselves by secretly boring the tunnel ourselves. If Clooney did it, it can't be that hard...right?

Seriously, I'd love to help but over the next few months I'd like to take a step back from this transportation/development hobby of mine and focus more on school activities and my future career. So, I probably won't be as committed as what I did for the SaveTheFireworks.ca initiative but I'll help.

First, we gotta create a name for this group...and if we want to be a credible group, we need to treat the other side with respect - no matter how insane and ignorant (and arrogant) their opinions are.

A name and a motto are important, yes, nothing to fancy though, we want to stick straight to the point. Any suggestions?

Also, maybe we should have a meet this weekend or coming week to get such details as our name, image, etc... decided? I will be in Edmonton from Thursday the 23rd to Tuesday the 28th on a business trip so next next weekend is no good for me, but all my exams are over so i am now a little more flexible.

I'd suggest researching the range of typical costs for each technology and estimating the travel times. Keep in mind that there can be a lot of variation in the cost of LRT because it means so many things.

You need different approaches for different people, telling the merchants along broadway that a m-line extension will save 15 minutes to a ubc student means nothing, they would rather have the students looking out the window of a bus and see their stores everyday instead of passing by 30ft underground.
The residents will have other concerns, among which is the crime train fear.

Another issue to consider is honestly not all voices are equal contrary to popular belief. The opinions of those that live and work along the line have much more weight then those that plan on using the line, even the views of ubc students don't have full weight as they are only affect by the line for ~4yrs as opposed to a lifetime for the locals.

So while I agree a Pro-skytrain group is a positive idea I don't think the group itself will have much success. In the end Translink will make the best desicion they can and there will be some unhappy people. In that regards Translink was smart in unpoliticizing translink, it enables them to make some unpopular decisions without fear of being voted out. I'm still confident that we will see an M-Line extension all the way thru to the campus.

My absolute dream scenario would be to elevate the Blanca to UBC section and then bore a tunnel under 10th.

If the track could be lofted to treetop height it would offer absolutely incredible views and create an unforgettable sense of arrival to UBC and the University Endowment Lands. Compare that to a bus or tram.

We're building for generations and I believe through and through that a Broadway to UBC SkyTrain line would do more for this city than any other piece of infrastructure you can name.

I do want to add that I agree with Patrick Condon's position on at-grade streetcars and LRT. I do think that a comprehensive network of street-level railways create more urbane, vibrant, and pedestrian-oriented cities than subways alone.

However, we need both and the subway/metro backbone should come first.

Once we've built the UBC SkyTrain line I think that heavy rail/rapid transit construction in the City of Vancouver would be done for a generation and at that time we should absolutely undertake an ongoing program of replacing the busiest trolley lines with streetcar/LRT.

Community shuttle -> diesel bus -> electric trolly -> streetcar/LRT/B-Line -> SkyTrain/metro

To bad "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" has already been patented.

For a name, just throwing it out there.
