Public Meeting on Broadway Transit Concerns

Date: Tuesday, April 14, 2009
Time: 7:30pm - 9:30pm
Location:St James Community Square
Street: 3214 West 10th Ave.
City/Town: Vancouver, BC

Changes are coming to neighbourhoods along Broadway with a higher volume transit link to UBC.

Are the changes the best for businesses and the community? Local businesses are very concerned following the Cambie Street experience. Translink has provided limited information and are making recommendations without consulting the community.

A Coalition has been formed: Local businesses, residents, environmental and transportation experts have joined in a coalition to ensure a proper public process to create a transit system that works for our neigbourhood.

Please attend. Various groups will be giving updates and information. Opportunities to speak and give input will be provided.
Looks like the NIMBYs are circling the wagons.

The Broadway Merchants Association contains some of the NIMBYest and dumbest people on this planet. Why so knee jerk already even BEFORE any concrete plans about the M-Line expansions were made? Didn't they know that very likely the construction will take place on W10th, NOT on Broadway itself?

What a bunch of juvenile whiners

This UBC rapid transit project (in particular the M-Line expansion) shouldn't even face ANY opposition because it's such a needed rapid transit link. It's just SO obvious.

Translink is being brilliant by playing the cards the way they are, let the nimbies think Broadway is a preferred route, the'll get all upset and yell and cry, Translink turns around and says okay okay you win, we'll use 10th ave instead. Nimbies think they've won and Translink execs do high 5s in the back room after the meeting.

Of course this isn't the case, I'm sure there are no politics involved in any decision.

We *hope* that's what happens.

Because ultimately, the argument is not just "Broadway or elsewhere", it's also "at-grade trams vs underground Skytrain vs elevated Skytrain vs rapid bus". If the NIMBYs firstly convince all parties (media, residents, politicians) that any Skytrain/LRT is BAAAD then the remaining options default to using Broadway.

The NIMBYs won't go away if and when the train is run down 10th. At the best you'll just exchange business NIMBYs with homeowner NIMBYs. Quite frankly, if the "powers that be" wanted to be expeditious about this, they would split this into two phases. The first phase from VCC Stn to Bway at Cambie for a Canada Line connection. This would provide much needed relief to Bway Stn on the Expo line by providing an alternative transfer point off the M line to Downtown. The second phase would take you as far west as possible. That second phase will probably be held up by NIMBYs and their lawyers for many, many years. The further west you go, the more they've got to spend on lawyers who can cook up all sorts of crap about how even a tunnel boring machine working way underneath those houses will devastate their client's lives and damage their children forever. That line will have to be rammed through by the Province using whatever legislation necessary if it is ever going to have a chance to get past Cambie. Mark my words, it will make the Canada Line fracas with the Cambie business owners like like a mosquito bite.

Actually, a vocal group of residents in heritage homes on 10th Ave. near City Hall caused the City Council of the day to rethink support for the route on 10th Ave.

From what i understand, they arent necessarily against skytrain
they just want to be consulted in the best way to implement a mass transit to make sure the area isnt affected like cambie street...
Also worth mention that you should realize that 10th ave does have businesses...

til you get to the Sasamat area. Also expect some opposition from the VGH area laboratories - TO's University Line was bored to reduce vibrations in the TGH hospital precinct (that's why those stations (St Patrick and Queen's Park) are round.

I agree that the West Broadway group is NIMBYism at it's worst, however the government/Translink really dropped the ball with respect to the Cambie St. merchants. They can't be surprised that any future rapid transit development will face this type of hurdle.

not really anything but this is the west side - one woman is found murdered and 75 officers are on the case... doesn't happen on the east side like that

Mel Lehan, Campbell’s NDP challenger in Vancouver–Point Grey, is organizing a public meeting on the impact of building a UBC–bound rapid-transit line along the West Broadway corridor. The forum will be held Tuesday (April 14) at St. James Community Square starting at 7:30 p.m.

Methinks it's rather dumb to pander to the NIMBY elements of the Millennium Line extension. The word "impact" is code for NIMBY and if this guy has his way it might never be built.

You mean an NDP MLA is challenging a UBC Millenium Line extension that former NDP Premier Glen Clark envisioned in the first place? Wow that is just soooo surprising! Someone give Mel Lehan a medal.

A tram, a tunnel or Skytrain for Broadway out to UBC?
VANCOUVER/CKNW(AM980)
4/15/2009

Over 120 people packed St. James Community Hall Tuesday evening to have their say on the proposed rapid transit line out to the University.

UBC Professor Patrick Condon says a tram system is the way to go, "So to construct one of these relative to the costs, the capital costs of construction, it's three times more, about, to do Skytrain, after you figure out all the passenger capacities and so forth, so it's a whole lot cheaper to build."

Others say the 2.8 billion dollars slated for the line could be better spent on buses, hospitals and more affordable housing.

Broadway business owners are also fearful they’ll be hit by Canada Line-style construction.

^ I can almost guarantee that that guy does not take transit to UBC every day. If he did, I'm sure his priorities would be a lot different. I'd rather see the money spent on a grade-separated system as my commute would be reduced by about 20-25 minutes, counting transfers and time on the 99. I should have gone to that meeting, but exams are afoot.

I just wish that the government would extend the M-Line out to Cambie to meet with the C-line in the near future just to ensure that these quantity over quality nuts dont screw us over and we end up with a transfer at VCC clark or Broadway/Commercial from the skytrain to an LRT and then another transfer at Cambie to the C-Line if one wanted to travel so. To me it makes very little sense to make that corridor LRT. And yes, chances are he rarely takes public transit.

I was there. It was pretty bad. A lot of misinformation flying around. Condon seems to think it is OK to have a tram to UBC that would take 15 minutes longer. The reality is that people would just continue to drive. I'm not sure why anyone would suggest spending money on a tram to UBC that would likely be slower than the b-line.
