SSP was started in Vancouver.

As a consequence it's West-Coast Heavy.

I think Dylan still runs it right?

Not to be contrary, but he makes some good points. SkyTrain doesn't need to go must past Arbutus in its first iteration. M-Line Arbutus to UBC can be phase II. The points he made aren't in relation to SkyTrain, just in going all the way to UBC.

cause they are different

the vancouver section is pretty much the same with less action

the Canadian section seems a little busier

and overall it seems more international compared to SSP

the infastructure & mobility area is quite good

the pic section is good and skybar is odd and there is a north american skybar which is pretty interesting

Assume the Skytrain would take over the riders from 9, 17, 84, 99, 480, then the potential ridership (without any growth) would be 1160 + 3910 + 3490 + 19860 + 3940 = 32360... So building it two phase would be similar to building the Expo line to Joyce first and then extend to Metrotown later.

And if it is bulid to Arbutus (or Alma), running a B-Line every 2 minutes would barely keep up with demand, and this is assuming everyone boarding the bus would go to UBC (nobody gets on/off in intermediate stops), riderships are uniformly distributed within the hour (which is not the case), no ridership increase from 2008 level, and all buses need to have at least 115 riders (pass-ups and more pass-ups).

Who is ssiguy2 anyways? He isn't the same person as a certain blogger who has a hate-on for SkyTrain, the BC Liberals, and Gateway, is he???

If ssiguy2 were here in 1984, he would be telling us how the Expo Line is a waste of money and they could just run a bus on Kingsway every 30 seconds.

I wasn't, for the longest time... but then again, I've been here for 7 years. Oh, the stories I could tell.

A lot of people here are on both. SSC generally has a better international scene, with more information and forumers from abroad, but I find their Canada/Vancouver section to be quite lacking. It all depends on what you are looking for really.

That's because everyone is here. I should be making it more lively but AHA tried a few times and I'm starting to give up.

Anyways now... let's get back on topic please.

Hey, give it a break will ya?

Raccoon Bites White Rock Mayor

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

CBC News

The mayor of White Rock, B.C., is receiving medical treatment after being attacked by an aggressive raccoon.

Mayor Catherine Ferguson was forced to miss a city hall meeting this week due to the raccoon bite.

"A raccoon came out of the bushes and bit me on the back of the leg. I got the dog into the house and it came at me another time and I managed to hit it in the head with the door and that was the end of it."

Ferguson says she is receiving tetanus and rabies shots due to the aggressive nature of the animal, but is doing well.

You see, the raccoons just want to keep their habitat intact and for us volk to build upward where we already reside.

Or they want their forest back.

And as for the White Rock. Nah.... they'll just blame it on Surrey teens. I always considered WR to be part of Greater Surrey anyhow. But then again, I've always thought of West and North Vancouver to be extensions of Vancouver, so perhaps I'm not the best example.

Growing up, I thought they were the same, and I guarantee 100% of visitors do too.

Speaking of separateness... UBC isn't really part of Vancouver, is it? Who actually governs it? Is it provincial jurisdiction? Reason I ask is if this has any implications when it comes to building rapid transit to it.

They're almost their own municipality, but they're part of Metro Vancouver anyway and their addresses say "Vancouver, BC". When it comes to like say getting a building permit though, you don't go through the City of Vancouver, you go through their building permits department. That's all I know. Like other municipalities, Translink probably has to get their approval on the proposed line but I think UBC really wants rapid transit to their campus anyway.

I think SFU is a bit the same? They are in Burnaby but they're almost their own jurisidiction.

UBC is on the University Endowment Lands (UEL) which is unincorporated. They vote for their own representative to Metro Vancouver (as opposed to a municipality where council decides which councilor to send to Metro Vancouver as a representative).

Metro Vancouver is responsible for zoning etc. As most the land (but not all) is owned by UBC, most those people get their services from UBC.

SFU is officially part of the City of Burnaby and thus must get approval for anything they do from the City, just like any other landowner.

Can somebody respond to this goof? I don't have responses to all of his comments and am too lazy to go searching for the information required.

I Seriously wonder why people keep thinking that a surface solution will be better. Not only that but they think it will be less disruptive overall than putting in a metro underground *facepalm* And talk about returns, a small amount of extraordinary disruptions for a new and important backbone to our regional transport system, or cutting up Broadway for a glorified bus. Seriously.

Here is the info on the meeting:

Public Meeting on Broadway Transit Concerns

Date: Tuesday, April 14, 2009
Time: 7:30pm - 9:30pm
Location:St James Community Square
Street: 3214 West 10th Ave.
City/Town: Vancouver, BC

Changes are coming to neighbourhoods along Broadway with a higher volume transit link to UBC.

Are the changes the best for businesses and the community? Local businesses are very concerned following the Cambie Street experience. Translink has provided limited information and are making recommendations without consulting the community.

A Coalition has been formed: Local businesses, residents, environmental and transportation experts have joined in a coalition to ensure a proper public process to create a transit system that works for our neigbourhood.

Please attend. Various groups will be giving updates and information. Opportunities to speak and give input will be provided.
