A bit more info from AJC.com:
A pair of interlocking terra-cotta-clad buildings as a metaphor for the linked arms of civil rights marchers is the winning design for the planned Center for Civil and Human Rights.

A jury of 13 civil rights advocates, architectural experts, local and national leaders helped the center’s board select the design by Freelon Group of Durham, N.C. / HOK of Atlanta. The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s collection will be installed at the highest point of the buildings, facing the downtown skyline.

Five architectural teams were finalist to design the $125 million facility.

Groundbreaking for the center is planned for late this year on a 2.2-acre site near Centennial Olympic Park. It is scheduled to open in 2012.
Oh great - more BROWN for downtown.

Liked the modern renders better, though maybe the color wont matter so much.

Residential highrises approved for Gwinnett Place

By PATRICK FOX
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Things at Gwinnett Place may be looking up — about 25 stories — after county commissioners approved a zoning change Tuesday to allow construction of twin residential highrises on the south side of the mall.

Plans for The Grand at Gwinnett call for 312 condominiums priced from $350,000-$1 million, said attorney Michael Sullivan, representing property owner Madison Walk LLC. With retail space on the first floor of each tower, the $150 million highrise would be the tallest building in the county....

OH this is great! And in THIS economy - who says we cant still build?

It's a testimony to the power of this city's economy i guess.

I'm very pleased that this design won. It's too bad that it wasn't right on the park, rather than that AWFUL World of Coke mess.

I still say this would have had more significance and meaning on Auburn Avenue, but oh well.

I think its in a great location. I think they are trying to ensure the most visibility and making it accessible to the most visitors. Great design as well. It is different and I bet in real-life it will look even better than the rendering.

I like this building a lot. I don't know why, but all that grass is not turning me on. I guess there's nothing you can do about it.

This was not my first choice, but it's still exciting to see this moving forward. I noticed some of the other entries made more of an attempt to link the musuem back to Auburn Ave. I think part of the reason this one was selected was the winning firms experience. They have completed several other african american themed musuems. I think this is a better fit for the city as opposed to a Nascar musuem.

I don't think it's grass (other than the existing "green space" behind the building. If this center is going for LEED there is a very, very big disincentive for grass in several of the credits. Rather, it's probably some as-yet-determined native landscaping and trees.

I agree, but I was never worried about NASCAR. It was always going to go to Charlotte...they just used Atlanta & Daytona to try to get a better deal from Charlotte.

Excellent! I did not know how that worked. I think sometimes (and I don't mean this building in particular) people get so caught up in the idea of "greenspace" that outdoor areas are not used effectively at all.

At first view of the chosen structure I too was underwhelmed. But I believe the rendering doesn't quite serve it justice. Look at the buses pictured parked in "front" on Ivan Allen. Since we are looking down onto the building I don't think we get a true feel for the size of this thing. Also, there are a couple of "illusions" that play in to the areas topography. What a win for downtown. Poor World of Coke with its mailbox design.

Museum

You guys should keep in mind that this rendering was proably done as fast as possible with only the most basic ideas expressed. There was a limited amount of time they were working with. Detail will come later when they actually have time to think about it...

Yeah. I don't think the final design will look exactly like this. The buses, for example, are not allowed as shown. And these competitions are all about eye wash.

Buses were examples, use the aquarium and W.o.C. for scale. This isn't the patriotism museum. And as someone just stated this is by no means the final rendering, but was done quickly to get the general idea across. If built as shown I am more than excited. But I believe time will make this design even sweeter once details are ironed.

Oh please forgive me for not being in love with the color BROWN in an area with so many BROWNish colored bleak buildings.

First, this isn't the 1940s anymore, its the 21st Century.

And at least what i'm saying IS a reality - unlike many on here who only come on to say how NOTHING is going to get built - THATs negativity man.

It sort of has a reddish hue to it. Plus, I think you'd be surprised how much nicer terra cotta looks in that color than, say, brick or stucco.

Yea, hopefully. Plus i guess it might be odd to have a glassy facade for a "human rights" building.

Just afraid of things non-fighrise projects staying too bland & colorless, like the CocaCola Museum - i mean the design was nice but a little too boring in color & facade work.

On a brighter note the ATLANTIC's got some nice n interesting color changes near the top - some darker yellow like paint on top of the already painted top - so it's starting to look cooler. Minus the BROWN coloring behind the crown X bracing design.
