Residential highrises approved for Gwinnett Place

By PATRICK FOX
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Wednesday, March 25, 2009

Things at Gwinnett Place may be looking up — about 25 stories — after county commissioners approved a zoning change Tuesday to allow construction of twin residential highrises on the south side of the mall.

Plans for The Grand at Gwinnett call for 312 condominiums priced from $350,000-$1 million, said attorney Michael Sullivan, representing property owner Madison Walk LLC. With retail space on the first floor of each tower, the $150 million highrise would be the tallest building in the county....

It is still unfathomable to me why someone would want to live in a high rise condominium next to a suburban mall.

According to the online Atlanta Business Chronicle, the Freelan Group (Durham) and HOK (Atlanta) design was chosen for the new civil rights museum! I hope the final outcome is as fantastic as the rendering.

A bit more info from AJC.com:
A pair of interlocking terra-cotta-clad buildings as a metaphor for the linked arms of civil rights marchers is the winning design for the planned Center for Civil and Human Rights.

A jury of 13 civil rights advocates, architectural experts, local and national leaders helped the center’s board select the design by Freelon Group of Durham, N.C. / HOK of Atlanta. The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s collection will be installed at the highest point of the buildings, facing the downtown skyline.

Five architectural teams were finalist to design the $125 million facility.

Groundbreaking for the center is planned for late this year on a 2.2-acre site near Centennial Olympic Park. It is scheduled to open in 2012.

Fantastic!! That was my choice for the CCHR also.
Not sure if anyone ever posted this, but it is interesting to watch Atlanta continue to move in population rankings....apparently, we just passed Washington DC.

CENSUS
Atlanta metro area now eighth-largest in nation
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Thursday, March 19, 2009

Fulton County has now surpassed the one-million population mark — and the rest of metro Atlanta keeps growing too, despite the slowing economy.

So what else did we learn when the U.S. Census Bureau released its latest report?

Fulton County population
2008 1,014,932
2007 992,472
2006 964,281
2005 934,242
2004 905,802
2003 881,928
2002 862,907
2001 846,806
2000 817,152

Metro counties
Clayton 273,718
Cobb 698,158
DeKalb 739,956
Fulton 1,014,932
Gwinnett 789,499

• Last year, 114,989 new people moved to the Atlanta metro area, which consists of 28 counties. Only Dallas (146,532), Houston (130,185) and Phoenix (115,978) metro areas added more new residents.

• From 2000 to 2008, the Atlanta area added 1.13 million people. We were second only to Dallas, which added 1.14 million people.

• The Atlanta metro area is now considered the eighth-largest in the country. We moved up one spot, jumping ahead of the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.

• How big are we really? To put it all in perspective, Los Angeles County is the largest in the country, with a population of 9,862,049. That’s larger than the entire population of Georgia, which stands at 9,685,744.

• Fulton County’s population surpassed the one million mark for the first time. With a population of 1,014,932, Fulton is the largest county in the state.

• Forsyth County continues to rank as one of the fastest-growing counties in the country, with a growth rate of 6.3 percent. Its population reached 168,060.

• Georgia had 14 counties that ranked in the top 100 nationally for growth. The states with the most such counties were Texas, Georgia, North Carolina and Utah, in that order.

• In case you were wondering how the rest of the South was faring, North Carolina is growing, too. The Raleigh metro area, with a population of 1,088,765, had the fastest growth rate in the country, at 4.3 percent.

Old news my friend... And to all of those who were wondering about what these might be you should check out the link:

http://www.midtownalliance.org/Documents/Upcoming_2008-2014_Developments_02_09.pdf

Granted they aren't all skyscrapers.. but about 50 projects are listed.

the sidewalk is reopened and this is going to be great for street level activity, especially given all the shadiness along 7th street.

For what its worth, GT will be breaking ground on a new basketball practice facility on April 9th. It would have been interesting, but due to economic events it will very much be a "no frills" facility.
