With which airline? I checked Air Canada and United Airlines and neither of them have flights to these cities
from edmonton, unless you make a stopover in Calgary

Those are the only two airlines i can use, as they are part of the star alliance network which is where i get my around the world tickets from

United flies SFO - YEG
Horizon flies SEA - YEG (though they're not Star Alliance)

Moving Muni airport traffic 'mindboggling'

Aviation expert warns of clogging International

BY GORDON KENT, THE EDMONTON JOURNAL

Closing the City Centre Airport and moving the small planes that use it to Edmonton International would be "mindboggling," a former American airport manager says.

"It takes longer for a small aircraft to land," Coleen Baker, retired director of general aviation at Page Field in Fort Myers, Fla., told a news conference on Wednesday. "You have to wait longer to take off when a jet's on the runway. It just slows down operations."

Page Field and the City Centre both have about 80,000 operations (takeoffs and landings) a year, she said.

"To mix 80,000 more operations with the jets coming into your International, to me it's mindboggling."

The Kingsway Business Association is pushing to keep the City Centre Airport open as the city reviews the site's future. The group brought Baker to Edmonton to talk about the facility she ran until last November.

A report on options for the 217-hectare property is scheduled to be completed by June, with council set to make a final decision in July.

Page Field handles general aviation near the Florida Gulf Coast city's downtown core, while an international airport opened in 1983 serves all scheduled passenger traffic, Baker said.

While Page makes money, it's helped by revenue from a shopping mall built on 16 hectares of former airport land, she said.

"Two or three times, there was action to try to close it, and they wanted to develop it," she said.

"There was just never enough of the wrong people that wanted to close the airport, so the (Lee County) port authority kept it up."

She suggested people who want to retain the City Centre Airport make a plan for how it could best be used.

"Most of our tenants, it's just pleasure, it's fun (flying). Here it appears airplanes are used for business, taking people flyfishing and other stuff.

"I personally feel you need to keep it open. I can't imagine closing it."

/\ Maybe they should discuss all the other airports around the city that can handle these 'fly-fishing' trips? Villenueve, Josephburg, etc.

Funny how they 'failed' to mention that.

Oh man do I ever feel for you guys up there. The arguments just get dumber and dumber.

I did all my flight training out of YYC when there were still flight schools there. I remember after you finally had a handle on landing you started getting used to performing high speed approaches, tighter base legs and expedited departures. I cannot think of one time in my 4 years of flying out of YYC where I myself caused any sort of delay to the big commercial traffic. I remember routinely cruising over the terminal building to land long on runway 16 doing at least 120 knots on the majority of the approach and then landing without flaps and hitting a high speed exit.

Ultimately of course if all this "fly fishing and pleasure flying" traffic would slow down ops at YEG the controllers have this "magic" ability to hold the slower traffic from landing until they can fit them in without slowing down the commercial flights. Amazing isn't it?

United flies YEG-SFO 2x day using the CRJ-700.

YEG-SEA is served by Horizon, though of course Horizon is not a Star Alliance member.

I'm surprised you couldn't find flights to SFO out of YEG nonstop, because they show these flights in AC's timetable and fare selection in the online booking section.

...

I trust that when all the facts are on the table for city council to look at this summer, the choice will be obvious.

Edmonton's media is famous for voicing the cries of the uninformed public, it makes the "letters" section more exciting to read...

You would think this sort of journalism dribble would come from the Edmonton Sun. I was quite surprised this article came from the Journal but perhaps the Sun would have also come up with this type of story except it had to fit in some woman in a bikini like on the front page a couple of days ago, man was that funny.

It is just a story, not an opinion piece.

The problem is that the general public is ignorant to the issue and will believe it.

You throw enough — against the wall and sooner or later it sticks.

We need an accurate counter argument to this garbage.

^ That's a pretty dim view of your fellow Edmontonians.

The feeling that I get is that most Edmontonians want the airport closed, and those that were on the fence previously now just want it shut down to end the tiresome debate.

The problem is that a lot of people believe that what the media says is the gospel truth.

And special interest groups love that because they can present their version of whatever they are pushing, the more controversial the better, and the media put it our there because it sells papers, gets ratings etc.

So the longer the airport debate continues the more outlandish the arguments become and the more ridiculous the city looks.

Sad to see this happen when there are many other positive topics relating to Edmonton Airports that can be discussed.

Thats exactly it, the majority of the people I know could care less about the CCA as they have had nothing to do with it. It is a dead issue being kept alive by a few who refuse to 'pull the plug'.

Increase in refugee claims

This is what I said months ago about the mexicana flight causing problems for the refugee system.

Even without a direct non resort mexican flight into albertas airport the influx of mexican illegals is overwhelming our system.

Bask in your ignorance while it lasts, but untill more people wake up to what is happening in regards to mexicans abusing our system, nothing will be done..

Mexico city flight will have a net negative effect on our economy

Mexican refugee claims jump in Calgary
Last Updated: Monday, March 23, 2009 | 1:50 PM MT Comments58Recommend15CBC News
Calgary has seen an influx of refugee claimants ever since Mexicana Airlines started offering direct flights from Mexico City last June.

Last year, 339 Mexican refugee claims from Calgary were referred to the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, more than four times the number in 2006. Mexico is now the top country for refugee claims in Calgary.

Fariborz Birjandian, executive director of the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society, said he is seeing more Mexicans in Calgary claiming refugee status.

"In the past we've had also had claimants, but not in the numbers we're seeing today," Birjandian said.

"Recently, because we have this direct flight from Mexico and many Mexicans they don't need a visitor's visa to come to Canada, so it is an easy way [for them to flee their country] if they're harassed or chased by criminals and have their human rights violated."

Alex Perez, a Mexican who works with refugees in Calgary, said the violent drug war back home is driving people into exile, and more and more Mexicans see Calgary as a possible destination.

"Calgary, if you know someone — [as] a newcomer from Mexico, people help you. In the United States, it's the opposite," he said.

Most refugee claims rejected
New Calgary resident Cesar Colli Solis said he had to leave the Mexican state of Yucatan when 12 people were found naked and decapitated outside his hometown last summer.

The 30-year-old told CBC he was part of a grassroots political group that helped local farmers stand up against government officials and drug cartels. He said that, in apparent retaliation, someone broke into his car, battered it and left a threatening note.

After receiving death threats, Colli Solis and a friend sold their personal belongings and went to Mexico City, where they boarded a Mexicana plane and flew straight to Calgary.

"Not Toronto, " he said. "Maybe I have more chance for the job [in Calgary]?"

But not everyone who comes to Calgary with hopes of staying will be allowed to remain. The Immigration and Refuge Board only accepted 15 per cent of claims by Mexicans last year.

"The more democratic the country, the more an individual is expected to seek protection within their country before seeking international protection," said board spokeswoman Paula Faber.
