Yeah, I think we've maxed out our synchrotron's capacity, or as Lieutenant Commander Montgomery "Scotty'' Scott might shout with a strong Scottish accent, "Captain, she can't take any more.''

I hope the U of S/Province is squirreling away some dough for Canada's next big science project...

I was thinking it would be really cool to build a MUCH larger one on the animal sciences field since it is no longer used really. This would be the first thing you see along with the University of Saskatchewan sign. It would be amazing! It would really show that the U of S and Saskatoon is the leader in scientific reasearch in Canada. As well would it make sense to build one in say Toronto now that we have one? To me it would make sense to keep the project together.

$945 million for a major overhaul, damn! Seems excessive, but, what do I know about power generation

EDIT: I guess this is for overhauls across the province, not just Saskatoon (as reported by CTV news).

The Queen Elizabeth Power Station is in line for a major overhaul.

SaskPower is set to announce a 9 hundred and 45 million dollar expansion this Friday.

The improvements will take the province into the next century as far as power generation is concerned.

Yeah, the U of S has those huge tracts of land within the city, and on the fringes. They could easily fit a few synchrotrons in there, or one big one

These national science project location decisions are half political, and half logical (with respect to forming clusters of complementary operations). Saskatoon may, or may not land the next big national science project, but, that doesn't mean Saskatchewan/Western Canada can't pursue big science projects on their own.

There was a business mag about a month ago that stated they wanted Saskatoon to be the science capital of Canada by 2020, I feel that an additional CLS would be a HUGE contributor to this, or perhaps a second innovation place, MAYBE even located downtown!

That thought has never crossed my mind, but, I like your line of thinking. If that were to happen, we would no doubt get some crazy/unique/beautiful buildings for the Downtown. Too bad that is very unlikely to happen soon. Innovation Place still has a few pieces of vacant land left to develop, but, after that Downtown should be considered for a second Innovation Place

Do you recall the name of the business magazine?

It comes out every quarter, I think it's just like Saskatoon business or something, maybe google Saskatoon science capital of canada by 2020, that was their big thing in the mag. My friend and I are both becoming geneticists basically and we dream of building a rediculously beautiful building downtown for our lab and about how we will bring science to the core, hopefully one day that dream will materialize.

Railway reluctant to leave downtown

City wants CP, CN to relocate operations as part of 25th St. plan

By David Hutton, The StarPhoenixMarch 18, 2009 9:01 AMBe the first to post a comment

With plans for the 25th Street extension now approved, the major question turns to if or when the railways will abandon some of their downtown lines for new routes on the periphery of the city.

But Canadian Pacific Railway dug in its heels Tuesday, saying it has no plans to leave downtown. Doing so would significantly disrupt its business in the city, a spokesperson said.

"We have no desire or intention to relocate," Breanne Feigel said in an interview.

The city is stuck in a position where it is planning the 25th Street extension -- and the redevelopment of the surrounding area -- across two sets of tracks while also planning long term for the departure of trains from downtown or, at least, for the CPR and Canadian National Railway to move rail-car switching out of the area.

Switching of rail cars poses one of the biggest impediments to redeveloping the city yards along the 25th Street extension -- downtown's next big development opportunity after River Landing.

Extending 25th is expected to spur development in the warehouse district with the new $91-million police station already planned for the largest piece of land. The new road will give downtown a northern boundary, ease traffic flow and create a direct route through downtown from Highway 5.

The hope is the rail companies come to an agreement to move the car-switching out of the city's core. That would remove the need for CN's short spur line west of First Avenue, where it parks rail cars until they're switched, and would mean the company would have no need to come into the centre of the city, said Angela Gardiner, manager of the city's transportation branch.

The two options being explored are moving the switching operations to CN's Chappell Yards south of Montgomery Place or a new facility southeast of the city off Highway 16, Gardiner said.

"Ultimately, our preference would be for the railways to be out of downtown by the time the 25th Street extension is complete in 2010," Gardiner said. "It's still possible and we're continuing discussions."

The approved alignment of 25th Street, with a three-way intersection at Idylwyld Drive at the CPR crossing, was approved Monday, but city administration has been asked to consult with businesses and community groups, several of whom lambasted the plans.

The alignment will see 25th Street continue from where it ends at First Avenue, cross the single set of CN tracks, wind through the city yards and end at Idylwyld.

The main deterrent for CP Rail leaving downtown or moving its switching operations is the effect on its operations. The company runs three trains through the downtown every day and serves six businesses west of Idylwyld, Feigel said.

It's also an expensive and complicated process that must involve major cost-sharing from all levels of government, she said.

"It's not as simple as it sounds to pick up rail infrastructure and move it out of the city," she said. "It's there for a reason."

A CN spokesperson would not comment on negotiations with the city except to say CN is considering the 25th Street alignment. The spokesperson would not discuss the logistical challenges of finding a new site with CPR to switch cars.

Saskatoon: The world's ninth-most dangerous city?

Comparing Saskatoon to cities with ethnic cleansing "sheer lunacy," police chief says

StoryPhotos ( 1 )

According to Maclean's magazine, Saskatoon is the most dangerous city in CanadaPhotograph by: Richard Marjan, The StarPhoenixSASKATOON — Apparently, Saskatoon’s two homicides last year make Saskatoon too scary for one news website.

The website RealClearWorld.com has named Saskatoon the ninth-most dangerous city in the world, according to a feature posted Sunday.

The list is intended to highlight troubled places beyond headline-dominating violent hotspots, such as Baghdad and Kandahar, the editors explain.

Other cities with the dubious distinction include Johannesburg in seventh place, Detroit in fifth place and the Somalian capital Mogadishu at the top of the list.

The website explains Saskatoon earned its place on the list after Maclean’s magazine ranked the bridge city as the most dangerous in Canada. That analysis, based on per-capita crime statistics from 2007, found Saskatoon had the highest rate of aggravated assault and robbery in the country, and was fourth in homicides and sex assaults. Saskatoon’s mayor and police dismissed the report as misleading and out of date.

“The tourism industry of Saskatchewan (if there is such a thing) probably isn’t too pleased with Maclean’s,” RealClearWorld.com writes in its page on Saskatoon. The short blurb is accompanied by a YouTube video of footage from a vehicle driving through downtown Saskatoon, with the 1960s Petula Clark song “Downtown” playing in the background.

Saskatoon Police Chief Clive Weighill says putting Saskatoon on a list with cities that need military intervention to stop ethnic cleansing is “ridiculous.”

“To even remotely compare Saskatoon to that is sheer lunacy,” he said.’

He points out Saskatoon had just two murders in 2008, and that a recent civic survey found only 18 per cent of residents said policing and crime was the most pressing issue.

Even compared to other Canadian cities, Saskatoon fares well, Weighill said. B.C.’s Lower Mainland has seen 15 homicides and 36 shootings in the last 1 1/2 months alone, he said. Calgary and Edmonton, meanwhile, have each asked for more than 200 police officers to help curb gang violence.

RealClearWorld.com describes itself as a “catch-all” source for global news, commentary and more. There is no information posted about where the site is based.

I really hope the rails and the city come to some sort of agreement to ultimatley shift their cart exchanges etc elsewhere. I still think there is some charm though in having to wait for a train to cross, but only when it is one smooth go and no carts must be changed.

I find this absolutley RIDICULOUS that Saskatoon would be named the ninth most dangerous city in the world! Has the world forgot about the ghettos of central america, or what about the organized crime of eastern europe and asia. For some reason this is so rediculous it just can't be taken seriously anymore.

Yes, the RealClearWorld.com list certainly is RIDICULOUS. And what was the attached video supposed to demonstrate? Maybe that you're in danger of being run over by pickup so high the driver can't see anything closer than 30 feet away. Other than that I thought it was a fairly flattering montage of our downtown. Someone at that site must have it in for Saskatoon, because it just doesn't add up.

I thought that website was a joke. Like this one:

http://whitehouse.georgewbush.org/index.asp

That is just funny now.

I wonder if there is any correllation with these stories as to why I have someone trying to install me a security system for free and then charge me 50 buck a month for monitoring it or whatever...coming by once a week. I keep telling them no thanks, and the guys are always friendly and everything.

I think that is a joke. Flushing money down the crapper to pay for a security system in a city that is completely safe.

Most dangerous city in Canada... seriously? And the only city in the US was was worse than US was Detroit, what about Washington DC, New Orleans, Chicago...? Not to mention all the violence that we've seen recently in the Jane and Finch area in Toronto or the downtown east side in Vancouver. I have a hard time believing that there are only 7 cities more dangerous than Saskatoon but less so than Mogadishu... give me a break. They must have some really really flawed methodology in their assessment of danger. Maybe it came to them in a dream, or they spun a globe and picked the cities where their fingers landed?

Wow!! This is just so stupid!! It's has to be a joke. No one in their right mind would publish such crap. Total bull!! I'm sure people that have been to Saskatoon would agree it is not a danderous city.

I don't regard this site as credible at all, and I hope no one else does. It is basically an RSS feed clearinghouse replete with more ads than content. I also notice it's links are heavily bent towards right-leaning papers.

I think they should have made Saskatoon #2, right behind Mogadishu. I mean, why settle for #9, if it is that bad, just say it like it is: "real clear".

Why settle for #2 when we could have #1! If were going to be dangerous we might as well go all out, maybe we should even take a few pictures of people walking down the streets with oversized knives and guns.

The whole deal with Saskatoon being unsafe is what kind of crime scares you. Do you care about prolific minor crime more, or rare violent crime?

This series of studies seems to rank all crime equally, which is certainly not the case of individuals making a personal risk assessment.

Re

"Dangerous Canadian city? It's not an oxymoron, unfortuately. Even the U.S.'s serene neighbors up north face problems of violent crime. Saskatoon, the largest city of Saskatchewan, headed several western Canadian cities atop Maclean's magazine's list. Regina, the provincial capital, is third on the list.

Saskatoon earned such infamy by placing first in aggravated assault and robbery, fourth in homicide and sexual assault, 20th in breaking and entering, and 21st in vehicle theft among Canadian cities.

The tourism industry of Saskatchewan (if there is such a thing) probably isn't too pleased with Maclean's. In the 2008 rankings, the magazine had Regina and Saskatoon placing 1-2."

Gotta love the ignorance throughout, *sigh*. Anyways, does ranking as Canada's most dangerous city (even if that is highly debatable) REALLY put you as the 9th most dangerous city in the WORLD???

Apparantly aggravated assualt ranks higher than this though:
"That notwithstanding, despite disputed statistics, even conservative estimates show knife-related violence in London occurring at a rate of every 52 minutes."

Really the more I read about this, ESPECIALLY if there is tourism here, the more I go from a chuckle to a gut busting laugh. Seriously these people must be rotten corpses that just emerged from a cave or something and have no information on North America's hottest slab of land, SK, and hottest city, Stoon. So I say bring it on with what they write b/c the majority of people already know this is a fantastic place to be and that we DO NOT have anything near a knife related crime every 52 minutes, perhaps every 52 days if that.
