London is actually down in comparison to last year due to switch ing 4x weekly from daily?

I worked an emergency diversion of a UA (Republic) E-175 last night here in YYC. The flight was supposed to land at YEG but had a flap problem. Had to divert to YYC due to the longer runway. Plane landed with zero flaps. Eventually the problem was fixed and we re-loaded the aircraft and pushed it out for it's flight to YEG. Not before an un-ruly passenger stormed off the aircraft and we had to pull his bags of course....

It makes perfect sense as to why YYC would have a longer runway. YYC sits at a higher altitude than YEG, so the air's slightly thinner. As a general rule, the higher the altitude, the greater distance an aircraft has to use in order to take off, especially in hot weather.

I think YYC has the longest runway of any civilian airport in Canada.

You would be correct, all of that stuff can correlate into a higher 'density altitude'. Which in the easiest of terms is the altitude that an airplane 'thinks' it is at. So on a very hot day in Calgary our elevation is 3557', but the airplane may perform like the elevation is 6000'.

Back when AC was operating the A340 on the FRA and LHR routes you could really watch those suckers eat up almost the entire length of 34/16 on a hot summers day to get airborne. They would tend to rotate with about 1500' of runway left!

YYC - runway 16/34 is 12 675' long

YEG - runway 12/12 is 10 200', 02/20 is 11 000'

Not sure why a 10 000+ ' runway would not be long enough for this kind of problem, maybe it was due more to the services that are available in YYC to fix the problem?

I guess it really comed down to the captain's call, perhaps they were pretty close to YYC already and it came with the added bonus of a slightly longer runway?

Flapless landings are going to be much faster than a standard approach, so I can't see any problem in the pilot wanting an extra 1675 feet. It may not seem like much but it could make all the difference.

The captain made the call and the plane landed safely, that is the major thing to take away.

You should have seen how fast that sucker came in. I spoke to the Captain and he said they landed at about 210 knots. Much higher than normal landing speed.

They probably came to YYC just have as much runway as possible, better safe than sorry and YEG is just a short hop away anyway.

within north america? For example there is no
Edmonton to Seattle connection or
Edmonton to San Francisco
