That really is disappointing I just hope that it isn't totally utilitarian... I guess all we can hope for is a structure which at least has some nice clean lines and is pleasing in it's simplicity; but maybe that's just asking too much.

Nevermind the proposal, look at the contrast in light standard color and design. There is some warm wood posts nearby as well (complements the trees/vegetation ).

On the bright side, there is three firms competing for the contract. Perhaps they'll consider the aesthetics of the structure as a way to win the contract. As well, functional does not necessarily mean unattractive (though its much more likely to be).

FINALLY! the 3rd world shack of a parkade will be fixed up! and the cheesey flags removed!!! That will really clean up that corner (19 and 1st). I really like the picture of looking east down 24th, think of the potential development that could go on there and what a unique character it could bring!! If the city actually does build a warehouse district that looks like that (plus trees) it will really set Saskatoon aside for a heritage feel in western Canadian cities.

Forgot to mention, I really like the signage on 2seven5, for some reason I find advertising up the sides of buildings to be very attractive (ex. ginza in Tokyo ^^)

As do I. That portion of 24th is nice because of the warehouses, but, also because its not a straight road. The curve provokes curiosity, an anxiousness to see what may be around the bend.

Vibrant colors FTW. Paired with attractive lighting, those energetic corners will no doubt give pedestrians a good feeling.

EDIT: Although I wonder, won't the signage block most sunlight from entering the workspace on those floors? Don't employers value that sort of thing? We will see I suppose.

oh man i cant wait for another two block brick to cross the river, not. one should havethought the city would have learned by now that quality matters
so much for another great arch bridge or an nice modern suspension to cross our river. any ways i love what 275 is going to do with the parkade, looks nicer and i love how they are covering it up even more with billboards. the only thing that would make me happier is if they blew it up to rubble and built something derserving in that hideous parkades spot

Speaking of bridges, could someone please post some Saskatoon bridge pics in the Canada 'Bridges' thread? Surprised no one has posted yet.

SO exactly is construction of the new bridge set to begin, wasn't funding for the bridge in place a year ago.

Re

Sounds like we're going to get an influx of senior citizens clogging up our roads, yay!

Too bad about the bridge, it could have really made a statement for the city.

Forgot to mention Winnipeg, it always just seems to slip my mind .

I'm curious as to what will happen to our population when all these senior citizens start "kickin' the bucket". Do you think that will have a large effect on the population here?

You could still get a functional bridge that looked good. I don't understand why the city thinks they can't have the best of both worlds with this project.

They have the aesthetic sense of a dead hamster?

Just one of those wild guesses...

It is four lanes of asphalt. There is only so much you can do to make it fancy. Fancy also costs extra dough, and I'd rather not one penny extra be spend on roads than need be.

As long as it has a bike/ped trail, which the preliminary plan calls for, I'll be happy.

Six lanes of Ashpalt. I'm not saying super fancy, I am just saying that they can get the best of both worlds for the money being invested in the bridge. It is part of this city's identity, so I don't think we should take it lightly either.

It will likely end up being a concrete/ steel bridge very similar to circle drive I imagine, which isn't all bad. I am sure asthetics could be added, as well as bike trails like what has been done to circle dr. bridge....

However, upon further reflection asthetics might not be very important because of what is located in the area: (City Landfill, Power Station, Train Bridge with busiest rail network in the city)

Man, Saskatoon looks like it took a beating from the ugly stick in those pics, lol. That's too bad about the bridge design, an interesting considering comments from Atchison regarding the construction

“I think when you design major structures like this that they have to be architecturally pleasing,” Atchison said after a news conference at Prairieland Park. “They actually identify your community for the future as well. Look what they’ve done in Boston, Vancouver, San Francisco. Sometimes it costs a little more.”

The $300-million budget is enough to build a “purely functional bridge,” said Cal Sexsmith, the city’s acting manager of strategic services. Architects and engineers could design it with aesthetics in mind or try to add them later, he said. It’s unlikely the city would build another bridge in the arched style of the Broadway and University bridges, because extra piers would dramatically increase costs.

“You really don’t see that style of bridge being built anywhere,” Sexsmith said.

I don't think we're going to end up with another bridge like Circle Drive.

yes most of those pictures have some of the more hideous buildings in them but those are areas where quite a bit of development are happening, so in 7-10 years lots of those buildings will be gone or drastically changed(atleast i hope)

anyways back on the bridge, it was said by on previous posts saskatoon is the city of bridges and i hope they try to realize this and put some effort into the design of our future bridge. I know it is not by the most beautiful area, but the dump will eventuallly be filled and moved(made into park or mount blackstrap the 2nd) and the power plant will become old and houses will take its place just like the old one.the city needs to prepare for the future because i truely dont want to see another mistake among the other ones in this city
