I suppose a boring 6-floor cereal box is better than the parking lot they had there before, but still....they could do better

Given that particular location, I don't mind so much at all that it's not taller. At this point I think that it's a big improvement over that previous parking lot. Referring back to my memory of the rendering, the finished product was pretty cool and creative. Hopefully, they will stick to the rendering and not try to pull a fast one, or bait and switch.

Instead of seeing empty asphalt, decaying lots, chain-link fences and a billboard, imagine strolling off the 900 South TRAX stop into a pocket park, community garden or cafe.

That is the vision shared by neighbors of the once-forsaken 200 West corridor as well as urban-planning technocrats in Salt Lake City's Redevelopment Agency...

Yeah, let's hope that the picture on the cereal box makes up for the lack of height and dimension. The puzzle on the back of the box better be good! lol

As of two weeks ago, Trolley was still moving forward. The construction trailer was removed because that area will undergo grading work as soon as the weather improves. The new whole foods store is still on schedule (opening in spring next year). They also switched construction technique on the building, which requires additional manufacturing delays. The old bank building will be rebuilt at a new location. It was not demolished, rather the facade was removed and will be attached to a new structure on the west side. Not the best preservation solution, but at least it will be saved. The west retail will likely not be started until spring/early summer. I would say the west retail in more likely to be delayed due to the economy. The Pottery barn expansion will likely start in the next few months as well.

By the way, whole foods has been in the local market for close to two years now. They purchased wild oats in summer 2007 and began converting products within a few months.

There is a new 4-story Hyatt Hotel in Sandy right next to I-15 and near 9800 South that just open a few months ago. Then there is a 5-story hotel that just open also on 10000 south and I-15 near the Sandy city hall. I think that's a courtyard. I don't remember.

Universe Project concerns still present

Universe Project architects are facing the brunt of community discontent with the planned development.

Inland American Communities, the developer selected for the proposed project, and GSBS architects are planning to transform the west parking lot of Rice-Eccles Stadium into a retail, housing and office space development, complete with a grocery store, six-level parking structure and a roundabout.

David Pierce from Inland American Communities described the future development as a “mini-Gateway,” though Stephen Smith, an architect from GSBS, said the project is dramatically smaller in building density and size than the Gateway Mall in downtown Salt Lake City.

“We don’t know on the materials yet,” Smith said, but he said there will be brick, stucco, metal siding and stone.

Clegg Mabey from Sahara Construction, which GSBS has contracted for the building process, said that Inland American Communities is known for completing very plastic jobs.

“But we’ve been told by the architects, no stucco,” Mabey said.

Portland has a lot of these trendy shops in downtown and other more urban eclectic areas of the city.
