I don't think its that bad a building, except that its base is a parking garage.
Its certainly not my favorite, but I don't hate it either. It mixes in well with the S. Temple streetscape:



Also, I noticed for the first time the other day that there is a little hotel next to it called the Carlton. Does anybody know anything about it?

P.S. what an awesome thing for sugarhouse area! howeverI think that sugarhouse needs more buildings for those whom have a lower income like the apartment complex that is seven stories tall on I want to say eighth east?

The Carlton is a budget hotel that caters primarily to older genealogy researchers. It's quirky and many rooms are a little run-down; no two rooms are the same though, if that's a plus for you.

In 2004, the Carlton was listed on campaign disclosure forms as the official address of Marriage Education Initiatives, a shell nonprofit organized to illicitly, anonymously fund the pro-Amendment 3 group "Utahns for a Better Tomorrow," via a loophole in Utah election law. MEI registered trustee Neal Blair lived at the Carlton throughout the fall of 2004.

And that's what I know about the Carlton.

How is that any different than all the false facades people put on buildings in the 70s and 80s?

People in the 70s thought covering "ugly old 1920s" buildings with a modern square front was beautiful. Since when are we smarter than past generations to say that we need to cover up buildings from the 60s with a 00s front, because it's more beautiful that way.

To me, it appears we are doing the same thing. But correct me if I am mistaken.

I think destroying a Victorianesque facade and adding to a building with virtually no appealing Design is very different. I don't think the architects of this building put a lot of thought or effort into the art behind it.

If we were to take a building built in the seventies that had a great deal of retro seventies kinda modern at the time style feel to it and create a cheaper, less stable, less attractive design, like they did in the seventies to the 1920s buildings, I would be feeling same way you are, however, this building is not artsy in any way. I do understand what you are saying about needing to respect the past though.

Hurray! I love this! I bet other cities will view this as a success as well.
Utah has successfully convinced me that we are now respecting the past by preserving our old fashioned buildings! Our seventies mentality is gone in my opinion.

I woke up SO ANGRY this morning. I had a dream that I was walking around downtown and that I saw that Port/Shubrick had been razed and then I looked over and OddFellows was just a huge pile of bricks. I was so pissed at the feds. I hate waking up angry.

This is good news though, I can't wait to see it in place and stable. I really hope Port gets the money it wants and can re-open on Market St.

I was just walking down Main this evening and I'm excited to hear about the new cafe opening in the old Incantation location. That along with the new place opening soon in the Daynes building across the street and a little north will really help this section of Main.

It looks like the pieces are really starting to fill in for when CCC opens. There may just be enough going on on the 100 - 200 S block to create some pedestrian traffic.

I needed my fix so I walked around downtown today and got some pics. Not T-Mac quality, but something non the less.

Here is a pic of the Broadway Park lofts.


They are still making progress, there were workers there today and although I didn't get pictures, the whole in the ground is about half full of finished product and forms.

I also like that fact the Bingham Cyclery is moving in just to the east. They are working on the drywall inside right now. It is going to occupy the entire west side of that building. I think this is a great location and a great addition to the neighborhood.

What's the name of the sort of house-shaped skyscraper, the brownish brick-colored one with the matching windows?

I had an opportunity to tour a law firm in that building, a week or two ago, which my neighbor works for. I'm not sure which floors it was but it was pretty high up, probably near the top. It was a gorgeous office, there was a table in the conference room about 30 feet long, the most beautiful table I'd ever seen in my life. I'm just wondering if the rest of the building is as breath-taking. The mechanical parking was pretty cool too.

Is it the building on the right in the picture in post #8841 at the top of this page?
If so, then yes, it is the Eagle Gate building.

I couldn't agree more about just leaving most buildings the way that they were designed. If we need a building that looks like Torre Mayor, lets just build one that does instead of constantly trying to re-dress buildings to keep up with current trends.
