^indeed... the differences between a GC and CM are significant, but for all intents in response.

The thing about the KHL is they are so geeked up about keeping the elite russian players in russia and attraacting canadian nhl players, but other than moscow and st. petersburg most of the other cities are not worth being in if you are going to make that kind of money

hmmm... two years at 10MM or so a year tax free for 6 months playing, 6 months off and 6 months playing at which time the contract would be up.

if anyone wanted to pay me that for doing what i do in omsk - or almost anywhere else in the world for that matter - it wouldn't make any difference if omsk was "not worth being in" for a total of 12 months. it would be completely worth it for the rest of my life and my families lives wherever they get spent...

Anthony Henday traffic noise is 'painful'
Residents calling for sound barriers

By FRANK LANDRY, CITY HALL BUREAU

February 10, 2009

The province has an ethical obligation to build sound barriers along Anthony Henday Drive to protect residents from loud traffic noise, a committee of council heard today.

Mark Hamblin – who lives in the Mill Woods community of Knottwood, not far from the freeway – described the volume coming from the freeway as "painful" for nearby homeowners.

"I can't sleep at night, neighbours can't sleep, you can't use your backyard," said Hamblin.

He told a committee of council that Edmontonians were promised by both the city and province that noise walls would be built in individual communities if traffic noise exceeded 60 decibels.

The city's Urban Traffic Noise Policy sets a noise threshold of 65 decibels.

A city report acknowledges that material distributed to the public when the southwest extension of the Henday was being planned "erroneously quoted the city's threshold" as being 60 decibels.

But Coun. Karen Leibovici said a recent consultant's report showed there are times when the noise level near the Henday is exceeding those levels.

Administration, however, says there's nowhere along the corridor where noise exceeds legal limits.

"It's a little discouraging," said Hamblin, who has started a website, Hendaynoise.com.

"Everybody is throwing around these numbers – 60, 65 – but the bottom line is, no matter what the numbers say, this (noise) is extremely damaging to residents' quality of life, their health, their property values.

"Regardless of what we thought the threshold was, we feel there's an ethical responsibility to address this problem."

He said residents may pursue legal action.

The transportation and public works committee passed a motion asking for clarification of commitments made by the city and province.

They also asked for more information on whether noise barriers built between the Henday and the Cameron Heights neighbourhood in the west end have been effective.

A report is expected back later this year.

I went out with a girl from Omsk back in high school. She didn't say much of it other than Edmonton being drier than Omsk. *shrug*

There are a lot of western businessmen who would choose not to go to Russia if they had a chance to make 10 MM - they would need bodyguards for their bodyguards

this what i tried to write in their forum.. but it wouldnt let me..
If you back onto the henday that means that you live as far out into the suburbs as you can almost possibly go. Because we all pay the same millrate, the amount of tax you pay for your house is nowhere near the amount it costs to provide all the services way out to your little piece of suburbia. Those who live close to the centre, in a sense, subsidize your suburban lifestyle. If you work downtown you rely on your car and the roads you drive on more than about 90% of the citizens of Edmonton. If you want to enjoy the the churchill square or go to the winspear, or take in a hockey game, you have to drive farther than amost everyone who lives in Edmonton. I cannot understand why anyone would choose to back onto a corridor with high-tension power lines as it is. That seems far worse than a freeway. But the fact is you paid a lot of money for house either knowing it is adjacent to a corridor that is intended for a freeway, or if you didnt know - why would you spend as much money as a house costs and not check into it. All one would need to do is ask and not wait to be told. You are buying a house for goodness sakes! In the suburbs!!! On the edge of the City!!! With a HUGE open field behind you!!! Did it ever occur to you that it has a slight possibility of developing into something?
I do not have too much sympathy for you. But some of my tax dollars paid for the province to buy the land, and I know some of my taxes are being used to pay for the construction of the road. And I already said that some of my property taxes pay for many of the services that I dont use, but you do use because you require more pipes and roads than I do - so I dont really want any more of my tax dollars going towards ugly noise attenuation walls for YOUR benefit. maybe since your carbon footprint is about as big as the henday is long, perhaps you should buy and plant some trees along your back fence to block some of the noise

Here's my take on this 'noise' issue.....many of those folks knew damn well that there would be a 'freeway' built behind their yards. It may have taken 30 years to build, but it's there, end of story.

FYI - no sound attenuation barriers will help mitigate the noise given how far the highway is from their houses. The noise is already too spread out for a 2 or 3 or 4m wall to mitigate.

In fact, trees and vegetation are great in mitigating noise. But there really isn't an effective engineering solution to the problem.

It's trouble with a capital 'T' on Alberta Avenue, but seedy Cromdale still stands years after it was ordered closed

By ANDREW HANON

Richard Duquette won't walk past the Cromdale Hotel after dark.

"They wait for you in the shadows," the 65-year-old said yesterday while resting in a sheltered alcove at the back of the building. "Three or four will jump you, roll you and take your booze. It's OK around here in the daytime, but I won't come back here at night."

Duquette's been rolled three times there over the years, but compared to others he's gotten off relatively lightly.

On Sept. 20, 2005, 20-year-old Tanya Powder was passing by the Cromdale when she was swarmed, stabbed seven times and beaten with a cinder block. Miraculously, she survived the horrifying attack.

It's been nearly five years since Capital Health declared the Cromdale, 8115 118 Ave., unfit for human habitation and ordered it boarded up. At the time, neighbours applauded because they thought the notorious dive would finally be torn down.

But since then, nothing has changed.

The building itself is so tightly sealed that no one can break in, but the alley behind it is a magnet for drug users and thugs who prey on passersby.

Piles of garbage, mattresses and even human waste lie in filthy heaps all around the building. Gang tags cover the walls.

Since 2006, the Cromdale has been owned by a numbered company, whose only shareholder is Terry Nyquvest of Sherwood Park. He couldn't be reached for comment yesterday.

The 55-year-old building has a storied history. Back in the 1950s, it was reputed to be a favourite after-hours hangout of Bob Hope whenever he was in town.

But now it's just a festering sore in a neighbourhood struggling to reinvent itself.

"It's really frustrating," said Anne Olson, manager of the Wee Book Inn, next door. "It's just been left empty. It's an eyesore and it's hindering development and progress at this end of the avenue."

Judy Allan, the city staffer who's co-ordinating the area's revitalization plan, said that during public meetings to develop a plan for the revitalization a few years ago, "people would tell us, if you could just get rid of the Cromdale."

Chris Hayduk couldn't agree more. The city police detective lives in the area and is among the dozens of law-abiding residents working to wrestle Alberta Avenue back from the drug dealers and pimps.

"The Cromdale is an icon of the problems this community has had," he said.

Apparently, the tight security that keeps scumbags out of the building is also what's preventing City Hall from forcing the Cromdale's owners to tear it down. Because it's so secure, the city can't make a case that it's a hazard, said Hayduk, who used to run the police department's derelict housing program.

Hayduk started Community Response to Urban Disorder, which organizes "takebacks" along the 118 Avenue strip, where people hang out on street corners, reading, playing cards, or whatever.

The goal is to turn the tables on the drug dealers, pimps and prostitutes by making them feel uncomfortable, exposed and out of place.

The campaign has had a remarkable effect at the west end of the strip, from 90 Street to 95 Street.

At first, the prostitutes and pimps were openly hostile, but as the takeback groups grew, they began to move on.

"There's still a lot of work to be done," he acknowledged, "but we're in for the long haul. The end result will be that we won't have to organize things for ordinary citizens to feel comfortable on the street. They'll just go there."

Now Hayduk's group plans to take aim at the area around the Cromdale, but Hayduk said the ultimate solution is for the site to be redeveloped.

"It's private property, but it's had a negative impact on the entire community. There's been plenty of time for the owners to do something with it. It's that next negative symbol in this area that has to go."

Muni airport issue, it seems, is forever stuck circling the city

Scott McKeen
The Edmonton Journal

Wednesday, February 11, 2009

This is democracy.

City hall consults the public on how best to consult the public on the future of the City Centre Airport. It hires a consultant to consult with members of the public to develop a public consultation process. The consultant writes recommendations to public officials, to be unveiled in early March.

Public consultation will then begin in earnest. Perhaps public hearings. Finally, after consulting the public, our public officials will make a decision in public sometime this July.

And my head hurts. My head already hurts and we aren't even at the point where we 🞵🞵🞵🞵 heads again like we've butted heads for the last 50 years over our downtown airport.

The old Muni continues to haunt us, despite more than 50 years of calls for its closure and despite a referendum in 1995 that called for scheduled air service to be consolidated at the International Airport. OK, not everyone wants this over with. Aviation businesses and private pilots are quite smitten with their airport.

The nearby Kingsway Business Association is a key force in the Muni lobby. So are aviation and heritage buffs, who feel a great attachment to the old Blatchford Field, with its grand history in military and civil aviation.

Even outsiders feel strongly about the airport. People from places such as Calgary and Lethbridge would love to fly again into our convenient downtown airport. So all mentioned above will be consulted in the consultation process. So will people living in neighbourhoods under the airport's flight paths. Developers and downtown businesses will have a say, too, since airport safety regulations restrict the height of buildings downtown. Health-care officials will be interviewed, since medical patients are still flown into the downtown airport.

Maybe you'll have a say, too. If you have an opinion, city hall wants to hear it.

There's a catch, though. The discussion is supposed to be about the future use of the airport lands, not the future of aviation at the airport. Simply put, increasing air service at the City Centre Airport is supposed to be a non-starter.

Except no one should be naive. The vested interests mentioned above, along with city councillors Ron Hayter and Tony Caterina, want to talk about the potential of returning the Muni to past glory.

They will say a downtown airport makes Edmonton unique and attractive to business. They will say the economic development potential of marketing this asset is huge. They will remind us that the downtown airport is our symbolic Gateway to the North, as well as a link to future oilsands wealth and a storied past.

We're not supposed to rehash that old debate. We're supposed to talk about the airport as it now functions, as a general aviation centre with medivacs and a few scheduled flights to the North.

We're supposed to compare the status quo to the idea of redeveloping the land into a mixed-use, anti-sprawl urban village of 32,000 people, connected to downtown by LRT. If the airport is shuttered, NAIT could expand on its main campus instead of building a south campus far from future LRT.

Then there's the fact that the city expects it could earn $500 million by redeveloping the site. That money could be used to, say, extend LRT to the International Airport or create another investment fund to subsidize property taxes.

Caterina and Hayter complain the process is rigged. It isn't rigged. It's perspective, man. You've just got vested interests on one side and public interests on the other.

The public interest in improving air service manifested itself in the 1995 referendum that helped turn the International into the fastest-growing major airport in Canada.

The public interest now is in doing what's best for Edmonton, not a select few. The public interest is in moving forward, not backwards.

The public interest is in seeing an end to this debate. Yes, city council is bending over backwards to consult airport tenants, airport users and airport-area businesses.

It will consult neighbourhoods and northern communities and hospitals and aviation experts. And it will consult citizens and consult consultants.

But a day is coming when the consulting will have to stop. On that day, the mayor and councillors will have all the opinions and information in hand. They'll have to make a decision.

You know what I fear? They'll turn it back to us in the form of a public referendum.

He's absolutely right. Referendum would be a disaster. I would say 80% of the general population do not have a grasp on the issues and the facts.
Council is elected to make informed decisions on behalf of the citizens.

posted this in the CANADA section but interesting to see... kinda sad actually

I was thinking the other day about how Canadian cities have changed since 2000 and wondered how many of the top 25 (in height) buildings have been built since 2000.

*info from emporis so likely not 100% accurate, but interesting either way.

Vancouver - 11
Tor - 10
Calgary - 4 (5 with bow)
Ottawa - 3
Edmonton - 1 (2 with EPCOR)
Winnipeg - 1
Montreal - 0 (u/c ?)

please correct numbers if you know they are wrong or inaccurate.
