Cuts won't halt USTAR plans
The Daily Utah Chronicle

Construction on a new science and technology building on campus should continue as planned this year.

Rep. Ron Bigelow, R-West Valley City and chairman of the executive appropriations committee, said last week that construction plans for the U’s first building for the Utah Science Technology and Research Initiative would have to be postponed a year or two to compensate for budget cuts during the 2009 fiscal year.

However, legislators said Wednesday they didn’t think construction would be delayed.

“We don’t perceive there will be budget cuts against the USTAR building,” said Ted McAleer, executive director of USTAR. “But we realize there’s a lot of planning by a lot of different people that could change that.”

McAleer said the Utah Legislature will use bonds instead of cash out of the $50 million general fund to pay for the first of four buildings on the northwestern side of the U’s golf course.

The U has already begun construction to lay out electrical and water pipes to make ready for expected groundbreaking on April 28.

I like the style of the building. Who designed it?

Skin of the Wells Fargo Building

I think he meant in the graphic quality of the skin being better than the previous one. He didn't make up a new scheme, he just updated it so it would look more like the actual building than the previous 3-D model.

I see. Thank you for the clarification.

I was at a financial seminar last night and Wells Fargo in SLC was part of the power point presentation - just half of a page. Nothing specific was said about the building. It was being used as an example for a different topic.

I know, I was just adding to it - It's possible to reason without being unreasonable. Sorry, I just realize that it sounded like I was saying you were being unreasonable, but that's not at all what I meant. I was just summing up what we had discused into a one-liner

So, to steer slightly from irrelevent politics back to urban development politics, I was reading today on Yahoo Finance that the stimulus bill likely to pass may add $25 billion more for infrastructure. It's looking like they will probably shave off $88 billion from the original bill - money that would have gone to college aid and assistance to "troubled state budgets". It is important to note that the points the Republicans were/are pointing to as "wastefull spending" is only a very very very small fraction of the entire bill - less than 1% of the total $800-900 billion bill. As the Yahoo Finance report put it, "Republicans have maneuvered in the past several days to identify and ridicule relatively small items in the bill." I do agree with the Republicans that these items are unnecessary and "wastefull", but that doesn't mean the rest of the bill is - more than 99% of the bill is still directly targeted at job creation and "stimulus" spending. Let's not refuse to vote for an entire bill because we disapprove of 1% of it!! I will hold the Republicans completely responsible if Utah doesn't get it's $1+ billion stimulus money!

and any news on what's going on in Marmalade? Last I heard Barbacoa was one of the only anchors left. Any official news on what's going on with the condos and commercial space down there?

I just had lunch with my friend who works at JC Penny's in the office building downtown. I asked him about the building. He said that Zions owns the building and JC Penny leases it back. Zions has the ground level plus floors 2, 13 and 14. Half of 3 is leased to an architectural consulting firm and then JC Penny take the rest of 3 plus floors 4-12. He said that all of the accounting for JC Penny is done here in that building. There lease rate is $14 per square foot, so I don't see them going anywhere anytime soon.

My most recent info (which is a couple months old, at least) is that only the west side of 300 West is being developed right now, and it will be purely commercial. All residential is out of the plans. There are vague hopes that perhaps, one day, far, far in the future, right around the time we find a cure for cancer and discover life on planets in other solar systems, plans may be revived for further development on the east side of 300 West.

By the way, chalk me up as yet another person who recently visited Jam and had a great time. The wife and I went last night and we were both very impressed. Let's hope they get a liquor license, because that place is really contributing wonderfully to the neighborhood.

That is actually my neighborhood so I sort of feel bad that I haven't been to Jam yet, I'll have to remedy that soon. And yes, the west side of marmalade is currently under construction and is all commercial. I haven't heard whether or not tenants have pulled out. Word on the street is that the East side will be on hold until the housing market improves or someone else buys the land and moves forward with a different project.

Also, referring to the UStar project. As some of you know I'm a grad student in life sciences at the U, and am actually against this project. There are currently huge budget cuts so the departments that exist are really strapped for cash and are having to make cuts all over the place. We just laid off some custodians among other things. The professors that have been here for many years and built this medical campus up from almost nothing have not received any significant pay raises in many years. And now the state legislature is making even more budget cuts further hurting the current departments, and then they go and launch this UStar project and bring in a huge crop of new professors when they aren't even taking care of their current staff.
Additionally, under the Bush administration funding for academic research was cut by huge amounts making federal funding much harder to procure, thus now is when the state really needs to step up and support scientific research, and the people that are already here and have something invested in this university.
Oh, and I haven't posted for a while, but thanks to everyone for keeping us up to date on current and future projects. I still stop in some to see what's going on

Yaaay! this is my neighborhood too! The great thing about the new development on the west side of 300 west, between 500 and 600 north, is that the buildings have been built right up to the sidewalk! Also, there are huge windows, and hopefully even some doors, facing the street! it looks as though there will be on street parking, some parking on the sides of the buildings, and most in the rear. I think it will be great for this neighborhood!

exactly! I had all those same thoughts. I really do think that what they are doing is quality, it's just too bad that the east side will likely stay an abandoned lot for a while. I walk past it almost every day on my way to trax so I get to see it progress, which is fun.

I did this a couple years ago carrying full turnout gear as part of a team from work. It was fun.

Several years ago, I worked for the management company of the Wells Fargo Center and managed security of the building. So I could go where ever I wanted in the building and would just hang out on the roof at night. It was also a great place to watch fireworks on New Years or the 4th or 24th of July. Good times.

Anyways, I took a lot of pictures from on top of the building, including this one:

I'll see if I can find some of my others. I'd have to scan them first.

I was up there four or five years ago (yeesh, has it really been that long?) and took some photos.

This was a pan I did from the very top floor...

I hate to tell you Delts, but Alpine is not Utah's little swiss town. That would be Midway, UT. Host of the annual Swiss days festival. The town was founded by the swiss, and actually has a city ordinance in place that all buildings must match the swiss decor. It's a very charming community, with fantastic little bed and breakfast inns. The Blue Boar in is my favorite.

The Blue Boar is awesome. My wife and I go up every year for Swiss Days since it is usually during our anniversary and we like to stay at the Blue Boar Inn. Good times.

A hanger for airplanes. This is not disrespect as I know that it is a holy place of worship for LDS followers.

The mountain backdrop is that rare typical beauty that the Utah mountains that very few places on this earth have.

Nice image,
