i agree, what a wack of a rendering. why even post something like this on the real estate ad?

Hey, now that's the kind of attitude we need to see more of around here. There is nothing inherently evil with regards to achieving a consensus However, the methods and approaches by which we reach consensus should be of concern in particular instances.

PM me for further clarification on these matters.

Fire damage delays launch of city's biggest TV

A small fire at the construction site of what will be Winnipeg’s biggest big-screen television will delay its launch by at least two weeks.

Bruce Leslie, vice-president of marketing and corporate communications at Creswin Properties, which is building the 470-square-foot "media panel" at the corner of Portage Avenue and Notre Dame Avenue, said it’s still too early to know the extent of the damage.

However, the "on" button won’t be pressed on the TV until mid-March at the earliest, he said.

"We’re just taking down the scaffolding now. That was primarily the thing that burned. We’re uncovering it to see if anything else is damaged," he said.

Luckily, Leslie said, the panel itself isn’t due to arrive for another couple of weeks.

"Just the pillars are being constructed. It looks like it could have been a lot worse," he said.

The screen, which will feature programming from Global Television, paid advertising and community announcements, was due to begin testing before the end of the month and go live March 2.

34-home development stresses green housing

It's the biggest, greenest development ever for Habitat for Humanity Winnipeg.
The non-profit affordable-housing agency announced plans Tuesday for a new 34-home development on the former site of Sir Sam Steele School, a project that will follow strict environmental standards.

"This by far is the biggest undertaking we have ever developed," said Habitat for Humanity Winnipeg CEO Sandy Hopkins.

Hopkins said the project at Chester Street and Nairn Avenue will use less wasteful construction practices. Finished homes will be more energy- and water-efficient and have better air quality, he said.

Early work on the project is already underway, with 12 homes expected to be completed this year.

Habitat for Humanity homes have followed Manitoba Hydro's Power Smart Gold Standards since 2006, but the new development will also meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design green building standards.

The development will include single-family dwellings ranging from 800 to 1,000 square feet, and side-by-sides covering 1,200 square feet over two storeys.

Hopkins said following environmental building rules "actually makes the homes more affordable for our families" by cutting back on future costs.

Architects Rudy Friesen and Marten Duhoux with the Friesen Tokar architecture firm said the homes' windows and overhangs will be designed to take advantage of passive solar heating and landscaping on the yards will include native plants that don't need watering.

Paints and carpets that release fewer chemicals into the air will be used in the homes, and shower drains will include special copper pipes that can recapture heat and channel it back to hot water tanks.

Many of the measures don't cost more, "you just have to plan for them," Friesen said.

Funding for Habitat's green building program comes from Investors Group, Manitoba Hydro and Home Depot.

david suzuki shows are aired on that website. so no need to worry ...and if you have a special graphic cards on your computeryou can connect it to your regular crt tv set or better yet if you have a flat screen lcd or plasma ... you can just wire to it.

Thankfully I don't watch much tv and
I am old school but I find it stupid that you have to pay tp get basic channels just because its going digital. Myself I am hoping that internet will continue to stream some tv shows. For a long time now I use the internet as my cheap source of tv.

Why didn't he show how the Exchange District was being occupied now with shops and galleries and condos.?

Too much time on the Hydro Tower I guess left little time to cover the rest of downtown.

I liked the review of the building in Montreal with the expressway/highway underneath it.

I also agreed with him on his assessment of Calgary. That the downtown was still very much a "work in progress" "not there yet".

Spent a week in the skyscraper forum sin bin for making the mistake of arguing a point with snooty(ܫܘܩܠ ) Vancouver forum members. Here's the thread if your interested in looking at what transpired: " Major cuts made to VANOC budget; but fears raised that they're going too far".

PS Criticizing Vancouver's hallowed Olympic games is akin to criticizing Mother Teresa to a Vancouverite.

It was sort of becoming a KPMB infomercial at that point. I think he could have left out Toronto, since it didn't fit with his "voyage of discovery" theme. Winnipeg has problems that are common to a lot of less upwardly mobile Canadian cities and it would have been interesting to stop awhile and consider them. Another thing is that, having grown up in a suburb, it has not been my personal experience that suburbs are bad and everyone in them is miserable. So why cities are considered successful to the extent that they have people in them who aren't living suburban lifestyles isn't obvious to me: it just seems like a prejudice or a form of snobbery. I live in an ultra-hip high density urban neighbourhood and I don't notice people looking any more contented, on the whole, than the people I see walking to their cars outside the St. Vital Centre Wal-Mart.

yeah I was expecting more.

in a whole he was right downtown is pretty dead. Perhaps if he were to come to osborne village then he would of had better things because of the critical mass that lives there. Though osborne village does need a bit of a makeover.

we need to find a balance between the two thats what should be done but what happens is u get a band wagon witch nessarly its just that somthings gota give...

we talk about walk ability ect why not bring this to the burbs and creat ommunity that have a sens of walkability even with our curent culdisac layouts i am sure one could open a small shop in a garadge or do sorta like a corner store image that....... as i said balance thats what we should strive for not an inbalance!
