Ahhhhh...Parkdale. Love it! Such a great concentration of gridded neighbourhood streets and thriving mature American Elms!! We don't build communities like this anymore. If we have no choice but to build suburbs, than this is the only way to do them.

and actually, the bylaw req'mt for parallel stalls is 7.0m (23') - unless it is the beginning or end stall in a row.

This has always been curious to me everytime I've been in downtown Edmonton on vacations, and now daily during my commute...was there ever a plan to develop the BMO building into a tower? The building, to me, really looks like the ground level of a tower. I think it would be nice to have on there, I'm assuming there's no way to build one up now, structurally?

The new BoM building was originally to have a tower on top of it but it never went through. I don't know if a tower can be added on or not.

^ IMO, the two greatest wasted opportunities for towers within the CBD are the new BMO building and Manu 2.

A tall tower on the BMO finished the same as the base building would have looked phenominal. I don't think a tower can be added at this point though. It does not look to me like the infrastructure is there.

At least Manu 2 can accomodate a tower of significant proportions. I'd sure like to see that happen one day.

EDC Jan 20 minutes: http://www.edmonton.ca/city_government/documents/PermitsLicences/MinutesJan20.pdf

Looks like the Mayfair was approved with conditions. Good news.

That Artisan condo on 112th that generated some debate a few days back has been sent back to the drawing board. All the critiques brought up here seem to have been adressed by the EDC.

City builders buck downturn

By BARRY HANSON, SUN MEDIA

Jackhammers, nailguns and cranes stayed busy in Edmonton in December while construction activity cooled in the rest of the province, according to the latest figures from Statistics Canada.

According to the federal numbers tracker, the value of building permits issued in the Edmonton metropolitan area in December totalled $286.1 million. That's down 2.5% from November, compared to a drop of 1.5% across the country.

Across Alberta, on the other hand, the value of permits issued in December was $760.9 million, split nearly evenly between the residential and non-residential sectors, a drop of 27% from November. In Calgary the total value of permits, $199.8 million, tumbled 56.4% month-over-month.

Todd Hirsch, senior economist with ATB Financial, said the Stats Can numbers indicate a softening of the provincial industry for 2009. He pointed out the numbers don't include engineering projects like the ones keeping contractors busy in the oilsands.

Overall, the value of building permits issued in Alberta in 2008 was nearly 17% lower than in 2007. But that doesn't reflect activity in the local non-residential sector, according to the Edmonton Construction Association.

"We're faring quite well," said association executive vice-president Darlene La Trace.

Based on the projects that are tendered through the its offices - the association works on behalf of a number of tendering authorities - the Edmonton region had a record year in 2008, logging 1,634 institutional, commercial and industrial projects, she said. That beat out the previous record of 1,557 set in 2007.

The number of projects on the board for January is down 5% from the same month last year, a change that La Trace characterized as "not great" especially considering 2008's unprecedented numbers. "We had a fantastic year last year.

"We know, with some of those larger projects, they're cancelled or delayed, but there is an incredible amount of other work that's still coming through the association."

MacEwan mulls university status
Proposal draws lukewarm attention from college

Keith Gerein
The Edmonton Journal

Friday, February 06, 2009

MacEwan College could soon become Grant MacEwan University, an idea now under serious consideration despite the school's long insistence it has little interest in such a change.

"We were not actively pursuing university status, but we are not completely opposed to the option," MacEwan spokesman David Beharry said on Thursday. "It's not something we'd shy away from, but we need to look over the details of the legislation."

The legislation in question is proposed changes to the Post-Secondary Learning Act that would allow only MacEwan and Mount Royal College -- both of which offer a number of bachelors degrees -- to rename themselves with a university label.

While the Calgary college has been aggressively pursuing the change for years, MacEwan has expressed little enthusiasm. As late as last fall, MacEwan president Paul Byrne suggested the school would continue to see itself as a college well into the future.

"Our goal is to become the best undergraduate degree college in Canada," he said at the time.

But now that the province is providing a new option, it would be unwise to dismiss it outright, Beharry said.

Whether Edmonton gets a second university is a decision likely a long way off, said Maigan van der Giessen, president of the MacEwan Students' Association.

She said a change of status is an intriguing idea that could bring a number of benefits, but students and administrators must discuss the issue to determine how any alteration might impact public perception.

MacEwan offers bachelor's degrees in arts, nursing, commerce, and in child and youth care. A fifth, a bachelor of science, is set to start up this fall, while two others in music and communications are in the works for future years.

The school has recently been drawing more international interest, mainly on the strength of its degree programs, so a formal name change to university could further aid those efforts, van der Giessen suggested.

MacEwan students may also find it easier to move into grad school with a degree from a university rather than a college.

Grant MacEwan University College is another possibility, but regardless of what name is chosen "we will continue to brand ourselves with the one-word identifier -- MacEwan," Beharry said.

Last year, the government completed a new "roles and mandates" policy that aims to reduce competition among the schools by spelling out how each college, university and institute fits into the post-secondary system.

MacEwan and Mount Royal are both known as baccalaureate and applied studies institutions, which means they can offer degrees in certain areas along with a variety of other programs.

That status won't change even if the names do, said Rachel Bouska, spokeswoman for Alberta Advanced Education and Technology.

So even if the schools become universities, they will be universities that must offer diplomas, certificates, applied degrees and transfer programs, she said.

"In no way will it change their mandate or role as an institution," Bouska said. "They still have to offer the range of programming they already have."

RE the BMO building.

It's a pretty big hole in our CBD. Albeit the building itself is nice, inside is nice.. it is just missing it's 40 story counterpart. I once did a sketch of what I'd like to see on top; I'll see if I can dig it up somewhere on my PC here

NAIT student thrilled to win design competition
Took inspiration from around the world to redesign block of businesses on 118th Avenue

EDMONTON — A first-year NAIT student received one of the biggest thrills of her young life Friday when she was named the winner of a competition to redesign a block of businesses along 118th Avenue.

After being chosen from among 100 entries, Melissa Christenson will soon get to see her creation move from paper drawings to real bricks and mortar.

“I run through the area sometimes, so it will be nice to see it,” said the Wetaskiwin native. “I kinda feel like I’m in a dream right now. The further I went in this competition, the more I thought my design is so ridiculous, they are not going to like it.”

Christenson’s design was certainly one of the most innovative, said Matthew Sicoli, of Oxford Capital Funding, which sponsored the competition.

Oxford owns the block of buildings between 124th and 125th Streets, which contain a variety of businesses including a Turkish restaurant, book store, hair salon and pub.
