Thought I'd share something interesting.
Due to a little spat in the
transportation forum here, nname posted this image:

It illustrates how fast the SkyTrain actually travels on average for all station lengths on the line, in km/h.
For comparison, I did this Toronto one:
The conclusion was made that part of the reason SkyTrain is considerably quicker is because of station spacing (You can check out that thread for more details on spacing between stations).
I think this is a major factor, but also it probably has to do with the SkyTrain's LIM motors. I know they can accelerate faster, but I don't know how much this affects the overall speed.
Anyway, with regard to the Canada Line, it will be interesting how long trip times actually will be. I know that the stations are more closely spaced together and that it's using conventional motors and my preliminary estimates put it considerably slower, but I, for one will look forward to seeing real life results.
The results will show one thing... it makes a case for SkyTrain LIM to UBC as a technology choice... especially given the distance coming from Coquitlam would make this corridor more car-competetive.
With the Canada Line, it's less important, because the distance covered is shorter in Vancouver, which has more East-West travel than North South, but it will be interesting to see how the Canada Line fares against cars... (nevermind the small platforms)
