Apparently no status has changed on this building - the current owner has always had it for Lease or Sale. I don't know if his proposed tenant has fallen through or not.

I think he purchased it about six months ago - John Caci right? Previous owner was Leo Cholakis?

Route 90 plan frustrates

By: Gabrielle Giroday | Winnipeg Free Press

Skepticism, frustration and plain old anger erupted Wednesday night over skimpy information on what the city is planning for the stretch of Route 90 between Taylor and Ness avenues.

About 125 residents headed to Carpathia School to study five different maps floating where the road might be widened and how surrounding homes might be affected.

Winnipeggers were invited to submit feedback via written forms at the open house or online, where the conceptual maps were not posted as of Wednesday night.

The 18-month Route 90 Corridor Study, commissioned in December by the city from the MMM Group, will look at how the road work will affect the area and how much it will cost.

It will also investigate where the work should start, before a more detailed design and construction plan is tabled.

"I think it's a bit of a farce," said Ken Klassen, a resident of Fulham Avenue near Kenaston and former member of the city's civic environmental committee.

He said he can't understand why the city hasn't circulated more information about the cost-benefit analysis of the project for residents to review, information that a city official said will be forthcoming following more research.

"The public is being asked to judge if this project has sufficient merit... I would expect before the city wants to make a massive expenditure on expanding the regional streets that (the city) would know clearly that the benefits far exceed the costs, but there's no evidence they provided here tonight whatsoever," Klassen said.

City department of public works spokesman Ken Allen said the study is still in its very early stages.

Consultations are expected to be completed early next year and the results will be publicly available.

"The whole idea is to get the ball rolling," Allen said of some maps showing widening on Route 90's west side, east side and another option with a split roadway parallel to Route 90.

Glen Thomson and his wife, Janine Johnston, who live near Kenaston Avenue, said they've received confusing messages from city planners about what will happen with Route 90.

This could affect the property value of their home, they said, if the maps they looked at Wednesday are any indication.

"Four of the five options put a freeway through my dining room and family room," said Thomson.

Another open house is planned for tonight from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Canad Inns Polo Park.

The meeting was a joke! Consultants (way too many on that contract payroll) and City of Winnipeg employees sent to try and soften the real fears of home owners in the area. No elected civc representation - I wonder why! I guess I'm good enough to pay taxes (nice timing to announce the end of the property tax freeze Mr. Mayor) but I'm supposed to be dumb enough to believe that these meetings are an opportunity for our voices to be heard. What a waste of time and money. Let's face it - the deal is already done. Don't assume that people are buying into your attempt to offer input that has any chance of making a difference! We are not as stupid as people who have been elected to work on our behalf might have hoped we would be. You should all be ashamed - very ashamed!

Expropriation, plain and simple, it has been done for years. It is for the greater good of many people, not to mention our growing economy. I see this only as pandering to the well off that surrounds Route 90. If this was the North End, there would be no public consultation, there would just be bulldozers at the peoples door, telling them to get out, were building a road.

Sounds like a typical Winnipeg skeptic. Don't attend the meetings if you mind is already made up that your voice will not be heard. Sounds like you will not agree to anything suggested anyways. If the deal is done then great, let's get started and get er done!

It sounds like Bedford Investments has no intention of putting the facade of the Ryan Block back together once it's down. Enjoy it while you can.

I believe he has posted performance bonds but don't quote me on that. In fact don't quote me on anything.

This is the first time I've seen a map of the location of all designated heritage buildings. It also includes those listed on the inventory but not yet designated. It's from the pre-planning document for the Exchange Secondary Plan, published here.

FYI, the report says there are over 7,700 structured and surface parking spots in that area!

it means if he doesn't do what he says he will do, he will forfeit the performance bond. i'm not sure the exact scenario - i think the stabilization costs were added to his tax bill or something like that.

someone puts up cash with a promise to do something, but if they don't they lose their money.

Well if you're right, then that's it for me living in this city. Theres no reason to live in a town full of such high caliber idiocy. Probably should have moved years ago. But that's the last straw for me. WRHA building, now this, it doesn't really take much to see through this facade. pun coincidental.

We need someone like Obama as mayor.

Our mayor lately seemed to endorse that negative radio broadcaster, Geoff Courier from CJOB as River Heights councillor. No wonder Paul Hesse stepped down from running.

Everyone in this city is bashing Gerbasi because she following urban planning guidelines and doesn't play political favorites she just calls it as it is.

This whole city goverment needs an overhaul and this is coming from me who just moved to this city 4yrs ago from a farm thats about one hour south of the perimeter.

Most people of intelligence moved years ago. I'm clearly slow. If that building is gone, I will be too. I have no desire to be part of a community that could let such a thing happen. I'd rather move somewhere that isn't cold, where the NDP government isn't destroying everything like a cancer, where historical areas are treated with the respect they deserve. Plus the gang problem is only getting worse in this city. Heck they're building a new Autopac building on main street. I guess to service the area of the city with the worst amount of break-ins. Housing prices have levelled off elsewhere, might as well use that opportunity to get out of wishy washy Winnipeg. will we or won't we get LRT some time next decade? I don't care anymore. I'd rather live in a city where I won't fear that I'll die from there not being qualified medical personnel staffed at the ER. This garbage going on with a building I like is a metaphor for this city in a nutshell to me. If that building goes down, my attachment to this city is gone. I gave this city too much of a chance already, and its only letting me down at every opportunity. A glass parking lot. How apt.

The politico-development gangs, the union gangs, or the street gangs?

That's exactly what I was thinking last night. Should have got my degree sooner.

I am not sure of your personal situation, but quite honestly those are some of the most lame excuses I have ever heard of for being driven to leave somewhere.

If you are questioning the ER or medical personnel in this city, then I can only assume you have not experienced the system when someone close to you has actually fallen seriously ill, and you witness just how well it DOES work.

The gangs? Yeah sure. I guess getting you car stolen is worse than being the victim of a drive by or just getting shot while eating at a restaurant like those "nice" cities such as Calgary.

As for this parkade, a brick facade is just what it claims to be. It's just decoration on the exterior. It covers the shell of a building. The actual building in question is gone regardless of what happens here, bricks or not. I could maybe understand your anger if this building goes up without the ground level commercial, but until we know different, bricks or not, that building is done - and this isn't a surprise to anyone here.
