300 West is a freaking joke.

There is no rhyme or reason when it comes to development there. It could be an urban, walkable center for the west-central neighborhood, but instead, it's a mess. In ten years, it will be as ugly and as ghetto as it currently is because no one has a vision.

Universe Project

Here are some rendering of the Universe Project at the University of Utah. These are the first that I've seen, but there may be others...

Yeah, I like the Universe project. The campus doesn't really have what you might call a heart or gathering place. Yes the Union serves it's purpose but besides the tailgate lot there isn't really any focused gathering spot for people to hang out and party, before or after school.

Obviously I'm not sure if bars would be allowed in the Universe project but I think it would be a great addition, I'm guessing they aren't allowed and I'm guessing they probably aren't allowed along 1500 E (Gray Whale). I think there needs to be a place nearby for people to party after games, maybe we buy the cemetary land across the street and redevelop that. lol I guess with Trax being right there that those that don't return to the tailgate lot can just go party downtown.

The project addresses Trax and the Stadium nicely and still provides parking for the game. I like that the parking nearly completely been tucked behind the buildings in structures. I'm assuming there is some underground parking as well.

There is a place on University Street right around the corner from the Pie Pizzeria on 200 South

I do like this university project. But I'm in need of some clarification. This isn't another open-air mall is it? I'm seeing the Apple logo in there. This is supposed to be like a university neighborhood isn't it? Not another Gateway and CCC. Can someone clear this up for me?

The Universe project site has a ton of issues, primarily with access. UTA has already nixed any notion of additional or wider crossings across their tracks. UDOT has pretty much eliminated the idea of any additional access onto 500 South. Trying to empty 1200 cars from that site is going to be a complete nightmare. They should build the University parking structure across the street to the north.

I am glad that those drawings are conceptual, because I do not think that they take full advantage of the site, particularly integrating parking into the slope instead of having it all above grade. The general concept is very sound and I think it can be a great project provided it is integrated into the neighborhood and scaled appropriately so that it steps up from the trax station towards the stadium and the uses are placed in appropriate locations to reduce impact on the neighborhood. I say put all the entertainment venues right next to the stadium and the housing and small retail closer to the trax line. And they can serve alcohol, the state allows it for private businesses that are operating on state lands.

I don't remember the parking lot next to the stadium being big enough to even fit that the way they are showing it... maybe they should just go deep with the parking and have tunnels leading to mid-street ramps like CCC has. If they develop that lot it will become WAY to busy to have cars driving in and out of there across the Trax lines.

It's definitely large enough! Have you ever walked across the parking lot? It's huge! It's amazing to me how many people don't see scale when there are no objects of human scale around to compare it to.

Maybe it's faulty hand-drawn perspective that is throwing me off, but they're definitely going to have to cram in order to get two parking garages and a theater complex, as well as housing and offices in there...

You might be surprised at the size of the lot there. I measured it in google earth and this is roughly the same footprint of the stadium lot on the former ZCMI block, CCC.

I think that project at RES is awesome and would create an even greater gameday experience.

According to the Campus Master Plan, the stadium lot has 941 parking stalls now, but will have only 500 stalls in parking structures when the project is completed. Even if it were going to be 1200 parking stalls, 260 more parking places are going to make more of a nightmare than the current 941 cars using that parking lot now?

Really? You don't say.

What, a big bland Wal-mart, a generic Lowes and businesses with no pride in maintenance aren't cool?
