I'd be curious to hear if any names have been attached to the proposed hotel on the former Superstore site. The article in the Leader Post not long ago seemed to indicate nothing is finalized there. I would expect if the hotel goes in there, it's going to be a knock to getting anything near the exhibition grounds. These hotels are coming from out of province and, with talk of economic downturns, I doubt multiple hotel companies are looking to expand in the same place.

I had forgotten about the refinery expansion. Definitely lots going on.

Net migration to greater Regina was 3,100, swelling the population to 205,000.

excellent....

we have no time for a recession.

the next 3 years will see tremendous Regina growth...

Hey! Didn't someone mention some 100 pages ago (in this forum) something about Olive Garden Restaurant coming, possibly situating in or near the old Superstore location? (I can't seem to locate the posting!) Is there anything further wth that? I think it would go over great in this city, esp. if they do their all-you-can-eat pasta nights (a summer promotion we encountered when we were in Calgary last year!). They served us such a huge portion the first round, it was difficult to stomach a second serving! I was positively impressed! (and filled!)

Yup, that was me. I had heard that from a family friend who is a realtor in the city. It doesn't look like that's going to be happening... either he was given the wrong info or the plans fell through. I always was a little skeptical at the thought of an Olive Garden coming to Regina but I thought I'd pass on what I had heard anyway.

Here is the latest rendering and plan for Regina Centre Crossing... other than a couple of drive-thru's, there doesn't seem to be a restaurant in the works at all.

Thanks Madmax. That's too bad! I guess we'll just have to go to Winnipeg or Calgary for our fix of Olive Garden Restaurant. (Wow! Winnipeg has 2 locations, Calgary has only one!)

Thanks for the link for Regina Centre Crossing! I wonder if that drive-thru on the north side with the super-long line-up would be a Tim Ho? Not a very smart design -- from the diagram, it looks like you're committed to (with no way to escape) the line-up, should any delays develop before you get to place your order. Maybe it'll get modified by the time it's built.

Interesting. These 3100 people must not have kids. Public school enrollment continues on the same path it has for the last 5 years.....steadily down.

It said Greater Regina. White City, Pilot Butte, and Balgonie schools are bursting at the seams. Some Rural Regina Schools are operating at 130% capacity. Rumor has it, that two new schools will be built in White City in the very near future. Another elementary and a Composite High School. When the High School is complete, they will close down Greenall high School in Balgonie.

I've also heard rumours about a new elementary school in white city, as well as a new high school, although, I heard it was being built in Balgonie (to replace Greenall)

Also, Greenall is currently in the process of adding some additional rooms

I would say it is more a result of the number leaving the school system (graduating) being higher than the number of new.....18 years ago 2-3 kids was still very common.....now I know lots of people who think 2 kids is a large family.

If the population is rising significantly and school enrollments continue to drop it provides some interesting insight into demographic trends in the city. Enrollments have been dropping for years as a result of an aging population and lower birth rate as pointed out by SaskDave. However it is a bit surpising that enrollments continue to drop with the rapid population growth we are now experiencing. I would suggest there are two explanations. First, many of the new arrivals are young people without school age children atttracted by the labour shortage/high paying jobs or older empty nesters who have sold their high-priced Alberta homes and moved back. Second, many young families are opting for exurban living as ceedub says.

Unfortunately I believe the chances of a new tower over 6 floors in Regina getting started in 2009 are slim due to high construction costs and economic uncertainty.

The city has reached a deal with the RM of Sherwood to annex the land for the Global Transportation Hub. Nice to hear this is one step closer to reality.

Nice to hear. I support this endeavour fully, but let's also have our eyes on the roads that will feed the hub! Lewvan Dr. and Vic Ave. come to mind. It's time for some serious improvements on and to these roadways. An overpass here an expansion of the roadway there!

McCallum Hill Centre Tower 1 has a listed size of 161,633 sq. ft. (source), the new building in Saskatoon will be 180,000+ sq. ft.. Going by your statement, Regina would need several towers upwards of 400,000 sq. ft.

Has anyone heard any discussion regarding a new YMCA being built in SE Regina? I had a call from Sigma Analytics today and this was one of the things they asked about, trying to guage interest in programs/concerns with prices/programming/etc. Just wondering if anyone else had heard anything. I'm guessing this would be a balance to the one in NE Regina.
