Right now just the foundation is in place.

With Loblaws joining CP, I'm not surprised the price tag is going up.

The $27 million did not include the cost of the brand new, heavily reinforced highway between the Trans Canada and Highway 11. That won't be cheap.

December's Report on Business Magazine has a short article (and pics) on Loblaws new warehouse in Ajax Ontario. It is huge and very high-tech. I expect it is the same facility that is being built here.

I tried to track down the article on their site but you have to pay for it (boo).

It looks like three cities; Edmonton, Regina and Winnipeg, will be developing these inland ports in their respective cities. Very nice indeed.

Years ago I drove past the 1.2 million Wal-Mart distribution center outside of St. George Utah. I remember that the size of the building was very impressive – especially because it was the only large building in the area.

That number should be more then 1.2 million. I don't think you could build a Wal-Mart for that price never mind a distribution wearhouse.

He means 1.2 million square feet. I think they are estimating $200 million for the Regina warehouse.

I have been by that St. George warehouse several times on my way to Vegas. All you can do is go 'wow' when you look at the shear size of it. I believe the Loblaws centre in Regina is going to be 1 Million Sq Ft so it won't be much smaller.

Here is a Google Maps Satellite view of the Walmart warehouse in Utah. You can see just how big it is will all the semi trailers parked around it.

Just looking at the scale in the corner of the image the builging looks to be about 400m long. 400m is a quarter mile.

Here is the gov't site that gives the details and maps for the new west of Regina highway and shows the location of the warehouse and rail yards.

The "big" announcement next week about it....any guesses as to what it is??

Most of what they reported so far (including the name change) was outlined at the open house and is mentioned on this site.

The Urban Planning folks at the open house said Loblaws has told the city and province to expect 1500 semi's a week for just their facility....that does not include the expanded rail yard and any other facilities built in the area....thus the need for a new highway to keep them out of the city...

Here is a pretty interesting link to the website for the 'Guanajuato Inland Port' just outside Leon, Mexico. I am very familiar with that area of Mexico since I have a few friends that live there and I have spent some time there over the last few years. After talking to one of my buddies from Leon about their Port I am getting pretty excited about ours now. He told me that several foreign companies are setting up distribution and manufacturing facilities onsite.

Leon is pretty much right in the center of Mexico just like Regina is fairly central to Canada. What is so interesting about their port is that a delegation from Saskatchewan including the Minister of Highways and Mayor Fiacco visited the site back in June to gather information and ideas for the port here in Regina.

The bad news about the old Superstore from this story is that it would appear they have no retail tenants, only 20,000 square feet of office tenants and the hotel is just a proposal. They have a lot of work to do.
