Salt Lake was the largest metro to host the winter games. Vancouver will top that. Torino metro might have beaten SLC population as well. Sarajevo is smaller than Calgary, SLC, Torino and Vancouver.

Jmonkey I probably wasn't clear enough but I have to say that I love the Liberty Park neighborhood. It can be a bit gritty at times but I enjoy living in a diverse place. I am actually looking at moving again but I don't think I will be able to leave the Liberty Park area.

Torino is 3 million, I remember them saying that it was the next biggest after salt lake. But I don't think Vancouver is above 3 million, so Torino would be considered the largest even in 2010. The thing about torino is that it is not within close proximity to many of the mountain events.. many of which were 3 hours away. Salt lake was unique in that a LARGE metropolitain area was 20 minutes down the mountain...

What was the population of the greater Wasatch Front in 2001/2002? It would seem that as of now, the greater Wasatch is little larger in population than metro Vancouver. Perhaps because of a higher growth rate over the past six years.

Is that "needle" as in like the Space Needle in Seattle/Stratosphere in Las Vegas/CN Tower in Toronto? That would be totally cool with the mountains as a backdrop. I wonder if SLC would ever build such a thing?

By the way, here's a design challenge. If we built a needle, we'd need to come up with our own unique design. Of the three mentioned above, Seattle's is the coolest. What would the Salt Lake Needle look like?

I don't know. I'm not crazy about needles, and they're not terribly practical or useful, especially in a place like Utah.
Most cities that have them use them as broadcast towers. Here, we have mountains that do a fine job of that.

I think needles are a bit cheezy even. They just never seem to age well.

The Space Needle is the worst of them. We all seem to like it because its become something of an icon, but its really quite ugly.

Honestly, if you'd never seen the Space Needle before in your life and I showed you a proposal for this in say, China, you'd likely respond that it is the most useless, awful thing you'd ever laid eyes on:

Yes, it is one of those needles. The reason I chose to include it as part of this hypothetical development, is that it acts as a visual anchor and will help pull pedestrians to the south end of Main Street. That in itself could justify it's construction.

also, do you know how many tourists per year actually visit that place? not to mention the science Center attached to it. There is also a restaurant...
I agree that the needle thing is well played out.. and the idea of such NOW is a bit copycat and tacky... But the space needle is established and is a HUGE draw for the city... and certainly is not tacky IMO... say that in a seattle thread and you would be considered blasphemous...lol

Actually, China's needles are much worse. Shanghai, in particular, looks like it belongs in Disneyland. Beijing's just looks communist.

Seattle can keep the Space Needle, I just don't want one in Salt Lake.
....or maybe I'm just disgruntled by all of the money I've spend on tickets to ride up to the viewing areas at the top of such towers.

Incidentally, I visited the Stratosphere for the first time last Thanksgiving while visiting family in Vegas, and the place is a dump.
For a building that is barely 10 years old, it desperately needs a makeover for its interior.

Also, did you know that the Kennecott smokestack is taller than the Stratosphere in LV and is actually the tallest structure west of the Mississippi? I didn't.

....and yes, you're absolutely right, the Pearl TV tower in Shanghai is by far the worst of the "needles", and is likely one of the worst things ever built by man:



I throw up a little every time I see a picture of it. The worst part is that Shanghai would have such a fine looking skyline if they could only get rid of it.
For some reason the Beijing tower and the CN Tower in Toronto don't bother me as much.

They really were original with those designs in the 60s or 70s, whenever they were built.
