Wow great pics Kevin. Merry Christmas and I can proclaim that our skyline has passed up Nashville it is cool though that that picture in the mist reminds me of Nashville every time I drive through on my way to Austin it is always misty and the lights are so cool. Best pic of our skyline in this forums history!

The DT area looks so close from that spot in Zilker, but curiously no pics of the lights on the trail. I see where your priorities are, thanks Kevin and Seasons greetings to all Stray

Yeah it was kind of a bummer about the Trail of Lights. The lights are visible from that spot, but they had turned off the front of the trail by time we got to the end. The trail is open until 10 pm and if you're in the trail until 10:30 they start to turn off the lights. They even have the park police drive through and tell people the trail is closing, basically making you leave. I was a little peeved about it actually. The first night we went through they shut off the lights just as I was taking a photo of one of those portrait displays. I got the first one of Albert Einstein and on the 2nd shot they turned off the lights. We were by no means the last people in the trail though. The 2nd night on Tuesday there were way more people, but they basically did the same thing. I was actually thinking of emailing them a complaint about it.

Also, if you go to the trail, avoid entering the park from Mopac at all cost. We set in traffic for just over an hour and didn't get into the park until about 9 pm. The trail closes at 10 pm, so yeah, we were rushed. Besides the horrific traffic, it costs $15 to park! And there really is no security there. One year someone actually went through our car. Nothing was missing, but apparently one of us left the door unlocked and they got in and went through our stuff.

So we usually eat along Barton Springs Road and park there. We eat first then walk on to the trail. It's only a 15 to 20 minute walk at the longest, and it's so much better than being stuck in traffic.

Me and my friends took the shuttle from Waterloo Park. We went that last Friday cause we wanted to beat that cold front and the 30 degree temps that we would have had to deal with Sat but unfortunatly so did thousands of other people. We had to walk all the way to the other side of the block by Brakenridge and wait in line for about 1 hour and 15 min then spent another hour on the bus in traffic. We got there around 7:15 to Waterloo park and got on the bus around 8:30 didn't get to the Trail till nearly 9:30. By the time we got back to the car in the garage it was about 11:00. It was the most crowded Ive ever seen especially to use the shuttle bus let alone being sholder to sholder through the length of the trail.

We had thought of doing the state parking garage thing too, but I figured it would be about the same. Does it cost anything to park there? I really don't mind walking, even several blocks, even a mile if I have to, but then again, I wasn't the only one going. We had kiddos in tow so that was out. But the walk from along Barton Springs isn't that bad. We parked at McDonald's the first night at Barton Springs & Lamar. It was SO cold that night. We went in just to get some food to warm up with. All their nuggets were sold out. I ended up getting a cup of hot tea instead. Still, once you get moving and start to walk you warm up. And once you're at the trail you forget about the cold.

It was 5 dollars to park and 3 dollars to get on the bus (1 for children) which is up from years past. But if you brought a canned food item then the tickets for the bus were 2.

Thanks to a naughty laptop I'm just now getting to read all the posts and see everyone's photos from December 10th and beyond. Love the fog pictures and the night shots.

priller, this one reminds of Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds"

All that's missing is Tippi Hedren in a phone booth.

I think one of the buildings was from the 30s, but it wasn't much to write home about. I just hope they replace it quickly. There's a bit of a dead zone on the southern end of Congress there already. That block and part of the one to the east are in need of some street life.

A few photos from today during lunch.

The office building on 5th & Mopac, the name escapes me now:

Barton Place Condos:

For some reason they were dumping piles of dirt at Zilker Park today:
