The main roof of the building is supposed to be 621 feet 11 inches. And the top of the building will be 682 feet 11 inches. So the crown which will contain nothing but mechanical stuff (elevator motors and HVAC units) will be 61 feet tall.

I saw them tearing down the building that used to house Las Manitas and Tesoros too. Dollars to doughnuts, it'll be parking until the hotel project finally gets going again. It's the same with the Gingerman-Gables building. It's now a parking lot with monthly parking available. Parking in an easy, no fuss way to get money out of a lot on a temporary basis.

Activity around the LaVista site. They moved off the old construction shacks. One was construction offices and the other was the old preview center. Wonder if they will be replaced by one construction building or it just means all the legal mess is finally getting unraveled? Hum.... suppose to start in Jan. I will keep an interested eye out!

Got a new camera for my oldest son for Christmas. Of course, I had to try it out first, do a little "quality control". These are from the new camera (a Panasonic Lumix TZ5, in case anyone is interested). Also, lots and lots of birds out today.

It's not easy to see here, but the dark portion on the lower right is the 3rd level of parking garage they just started.

woah. I was just looking at the Dubai page and found a building going up called the Marina 101. I thought it looked like a supertall version of the Frost Bank Tower, sort of. Especially the crown.

IMO
That is the Frost Tower Crown. The building appear's to be a lot taller than Frost. I always thought the Frost Tower would have stood out even more if it was just 100 feet higher.

You got that right, the top portion floors 80 through 100 and the crown are very similar. It must be a bit over 1000 ft tall.

I seem to remember it is around that height. I'll go digging tomorrow and find the Emporis page on it. Dubai has several look alike towers. They even have a set of twin 869 foot towers that look almost identical to the Chrysler Building in New York. Blasphemy!

I believe the crown will actually hold floors 55 and 56, which are the clubhouse and gym floors, respectively. From their web site, this is plan for floor 55, which also opens out to the main roof:

And here is floor 56:

The plans indicate these two floors will be 13' feet each, and I assume the rest will be mechanical stuff.

Yeah, that definitely looks like the shape of the crown.

I know, that would be nice!

My wife -- who normally ignores my ramblings about buildings as we're walking downtown -- this weekend looked up at the Austonian and said, "I like this building, let's move there." After spitting out my coffee I said, "Sure baby, as soon as we both double our salaries and easy credit returns, we're there!"

Gotta love her!

That will be just crazy being able to go out on a deck at that level! With no glass or cage!

Here are some pictures of the Austonian crane from several days ago. It looked like they were going to start raising the crane, but they didn't that day (it was quite cold that day).

These images are from a few days ago after they raised the crane. The crane is almost as high as Frost Tower now.

A couple of skyline pics I took while at the Trail of Lights last Sunday and Tuesday.

Note the crane had been risen for The Austonian. The building looked impressive on the skyline.

Number 1 and 2.

These two were from last Sunday.

jeremyz: Nice vantage point you have there at the 360!

Kevin: Nice night shots, especially the ones with a little fog. Man, that Austonian is going to look nice when it's done.
