Hmmm.... Okay, so one more post will do it. Here we go....

Happy 8000 Salt Lake City

I agree with Wasden and DMTower on the stops along North Temple. You guys realize that one of our greatest goals is to see that street become a vibrant urban corridor. Nothing will make it happen faster than those TRAX stops. Developers love that kind of perk for their projects.

Urbanboy- I follow ya with wanting to place TRAX stops at 900 W. and Redwood Road, those intersections are definantly the hubs for those neighborhoods. But how do you propose preserving important left had turns, especially at North Temple and Redwood Road? Placing the station on the East side of that intersection would be most disruptive, as there are truckloads of motorists turning South on Redwood to access 215 and I-80. I just don't see how it can be done. I'm trying to think of a similar TRAX stop at such a busy intersection where left hand turns are allowed but I'm drawing blanks. At least as a pedestrian myself, I'd be a little nervous hanging out in the middle of that intersection waiting for a train I'm no transit engineer but theres gotta be a good reason for this. If designers did think it safe then why is the 4th South TRAX station on a calmer 6th East rather than busy 7th East? 7th is the obvious hub for that neighborhood but I think theres just too many traffic maneuvers that needed to be preserved, plus it would be a gauntlet of death for pedestrians.

They need to have stops in the northwestern part of the city. That is a HUGE area of lost potential... with that said.. I also would find it annoying and strange to be a visitor and trying to get downtown and having to stop every couple blocks. What they should do is install double track lines or turn offs in a particular area and syncronize two routes.. so that both can exist. Where there is an airport express route to a downtown central station area... and also a route that serves the area and connects them to the airport and downtown as well as the rest of the transport system. While one is docked into a station picking up passengers .. the express route would pass by on the rail line.. Brisbane Australia has a system like that.. because the airport is on the north side of the city.. and the metro area extends down the coast southward. If you are wanting to get to the airport.. all you have to do is catch an express route from a main suburb to central station downtown.. and then the airport express from central station. It would work fabulously in Salt lake i think...it would allow people to get where they need to go, while not compensating on promoting dense urban developement.

oh yeah.. and merry christmas bitches...:p

Wouldn't it be right to assume that as the demand, lines, and population increase, so also will the options? It's not that big a deal to serve both an express and local need on the same line such as the No. Temple. Different trains running at different intervals and times. I mean, just because it's No. Temple, doesn't mean that you're going to have to get on a train that hits every stop on it's way to the airport. North Temple, or any line for that matter, can end up with a sizable list of options, if the demand is there.

You can see what the plans for the new concourse look like here in the airport master plan.

Thank you for the link. It appears this concept of midfield concourses is /has become quite popular with other airports.

While thumbing through, I noticed the runway lengths at SLC required for the heavies are quite long. At IAD (Dulles) the heavies mentioned can use an 11,000 ft runway. Though SLC has longer runways. Since SLC is much higher in elevation, there will have to be some major runway lengthening in order to accomodate Delta's possible expansion.

(This may explain why Delta will commence non-stop to Sydney from LAX, not SLC. Anyone know of any other reason(s)? )

There are plans to lengthen the center runway to 15,100 feet. This is also depicted in the airport master plan. Although the airport hasn't broken ground or even given a definitive date when construction will begin, this should be their highest priority.

As for the new Sydney route, the full routing is Atlanta-Los Angeles-Sydney. LAX is more of a technical stop than anything, since Atlanta-Sydney nonstop is out of range. Most of the passengers will board in Atlanta, not LAX. I doubt Delta will see many bookings on the LAX-SYD segment just because there is already plenty of competition between the two cities as it is.

Stopping in SLC instead would add another 400 miles to the trip and would likely result in aircraft weight restrictions, so it isn't doable right now.

Regarding north Temple line; The stops are pretty much finalized. The viaduct issue has not been finalized (there is no money to rebuild the North Temple viaduct). The line will touch the south entrance to Teminal 1. UTA does not have much say in the terminus, it is an airport issue.

Thanks for the congrats everyone. While I love SLC there have not recently been any planning jobs available in SLC. I will be relocating to Utah County to work as the City Planner for Payson City.
