I really don't want to get off topic here, but I need to say this. There have been many occasions where an aroma of bacon has overcame me near the 4500 South exit of I-15. I think there is a bacon processing plant near there or something.

I could see a need for two hotels right next to the Rio Tinto Stadium. In fact I saw that coming. With all the people visiting from out of state to watch a game there would be a need for hotels there in that area. I hope these hotels will at least be midrises if not highrises.

Umm, I'm a big fan of soccer and RSL, but to say that we need extra hotels for all the people visiting from out of state to watch a game is a bit much.

Salt Lake may buy, renovate Barnes Bank building

http://deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,705269574,00.html

Salt Lake City hopes to improve and expedite its service for building permits and business licensing by moving the department of community and economic development out of City Hall.

The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to approve a budget amendment that opens the door for the city to purchase the Barnes Bank building at 431 S. 300 East.

A public hearing has been scheduled for Jan. 6 on the proposed use of up to $8.2 million in sales-tax revenue bonds to purchase the building and renovate it to meet the city's needs and energy-efficiency standards.

If the city purchases the property, it would house the divisions of building services, business licensing, housing and neighborhood development, planning and zoning, and transportation...

...The purchase would open the door for possible transit-oriented development on a portion of the property, he said.

The building is set back from 400 South by about 100 feet. City leaders envision that portion of the property being split off for development of street-level retail, topped with office or residential space...

Panel considers Great Salt Lake's future

http://www.heraldextra.com/content/view/291574/182/

The Great Salt Lake is a state treasure but faces a long list of threats and lacks a unifying vision for how it should be managed, a newly formed government panel said Tuesday...

...One of the decisions will be whether to create an overarching commission similar to those in the Great Lakes, Chesapeake Bay and the Puget Sound. The next would be how much authority to give the commission...

I come to other threads in the MW to read what's going on every once in a while... nothing is more annoying than delts145's making everything bold in his posts.

Dude, you're doing it to make your posts stand out or something, as if everything you post is so important. A) it's not. and B) It has the opposite effect you're trying to achieve. I don't know about anyone else, but "bolded" posts like that are annoying and harder to read and I literally skip over them without reading them.

Wow, obviously someone forgot to take their meds this morning.

I hardly consider it a problem if an article headline, that is important to the local forumers, is printed in a size 4. Some articles are not as important to certain forumers as others might be. However, it is ourrrr thread and ourrrr forum.

This is a very busy thread, as is obvious by the number of daily visits and posts. Sorry, but I don't think you'll be missed, LOL!

This thread continues to grow at a very sizable rate, and infact, is as busy as a certain sticky thread in this forum that has twice the metro population as the Wasatch Front.

Sometimes in haste, I don't do as good of a job or re-edit a post as throughly as I should. Often, (when it is a Trib. article, and we know it's going to be deleted soon), it's hard to decide how much to retain.

If the moderator or any of the many good people on this local forum feel it isn't necessary to have a link and then snipets of long article posted in [B], then I'm sure they will have no problem requesting it. I'm also sure they will request it in a way that is far more 'live and let live.'

A bit too much? Ok so tell me this. When RSL plays a game where does the other team stay at? Or their families? or the out of state media? Or anyone else who visits from out of state? They all stay at a hotel somewhere. But then they all have to drive miles to get to the stadium. So it would make more sense to build a hotel right next to the stadium.

Every stadium once built then had hotels built around them. Like the E-Center in West Valley. Only I'm hoping that these hotels will be taller and nicer then that sprawl.

15 or so games a year. A couple of hotels for players and their wives and 1 or 2 media from the away team. Not nearly enough business for 2 full time, year round hotels. There might be other demand for the hotels, but soccer games is not really a factor.

So obviously you feel your posts are more important than everyone else's and you feel the only way your little self and your posts can get noticed are by annoyingly bolding everything.

Wow, does anyone give a damn about "thread size"?...ahem penis size ... It is also obvious you are one of "those people" that look at post counts and thread views and tries to "win" some unmentioned and useless game (the game in this instance is having more posts than "a certain sticky thread in this forum that has twice the metro population as the Wasatch Front."). Insecure much? I think everyone would rather quality posts and good discussion/questions, rather than your own post count boosting garbage regurgitated bolded articles.

HAHAHA... what? someone butt hurt or something?

This is a forum where people try to gather information about our urban areas and cities and discuss them. It's not a race to a mythical "post count or thread views championship" ... it's not a competition.

Anyway, I'll continue to enjoy the "good" information many of you SLCers post about Salt Lake.

I think Wrendog nailed. Not enough generation power from the stadium, yet. Hotels are very nodal in nature. They may not contribute to a walkable environment, but walkability and sprawl are not the same thing. Not every building that is 5-6 stories in height contributes to sprawl.

I think you are the one who's butt hurt if you're the one crying over Delts posts.
And when did I ever say this thread was a "Race or a "Competition" Now you are just talking out of your ass. All you are doing is just proving my point.

A couple of things.

I could care less about bold or non bold, I didn't even realize those two posts were bold until the subject was brought up. I don't really find them harder to read, I'm not sure what that's all about.

I think the city purchasing the Barnes Bank building is a good move. It will allow them to more efficiently accommodate those departments, I know that planning has wanted to hire some additional planner but simply had no space to house them. As the article stated it will provide a nice opportunity to build a TOD on that corner. With the city occupying that building it will reduce the amount of leasable office space in the CBD and add increase the demand or office space to be built in a new tower.

As for a new tallest or substantial building, something larger than 222. I don't expect that to happen until the city can lure a headquarters hear, like when American Stores moved, or when one of the local companies decides to flex it's ego and build a prominent tower. Sinclair, Hunstman, Zions.

Well the Developer thinks there is a need for a hotel.
Like I said, whenever a stadium goes up, hotels start popping up around it. I'm surprise you didn't see that coming. I think there is a need for at least one hotel.

But come on we all know that the land around the stadium will soon get develop with something. But what is REALLY needed more then anything is a parking garage.

In light of the Blaze closing up shop, I was wondering if any of you are privy to how RSL has been performing in the new economy. I know there was a lot of heated discussion in the not so distant past about RSL even being a viable business, and whether public funding should be poured into a stadium for a team and a league that may not be around in the near future. But apparently RSL is sound enough that developers are willing to invest in the construction of nearby hotels so I'm getting some mixed information. Now I'm no fan of soccer, but I still think professional sports teams add a lot to a city so I'd like to see RSL do well. Can anybody comment on how RSL has been performing financially in this economic downturn?

I don't know how RSL has done specifically, but MLS has been doing well. They are now expanding again this year and next. Soccer specific stadiums are the key to success in this league.

Where are they expanding Wrendog? I've often felt that professional soccer has no place to go but up in this country.
