Edmonton housing starts fall almost 75 per cent

EDMONTON — The number of housing starts in the Edmonton region for November tumbled 74 per cent from the same time last year, said the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

Construction began on only 279 homes during the month, according to preliminary figures released today.

For the year to date, housing activity has fallen by 56 per cent compared to the first 11 months last year.

“This comes despite a robust local economy that is showing impressive employment and income growth,” said senior market analyst Richard Goatcher.

“The home building industry has been impacted by a slowdown in net migration into the province since mid-2007 and concerns locally about elevated new and existing home inventories.”

Single-detached starts in the Edmonton census metropolitan area fell 52 per cent year-over-year to 224 units in November.

Multiple-dwelling starts fell off even harder, by 91 per cent from November 2007 to 55 units.

“The high volume of units still in progress suggests that further reductions are warranted in the coming year,” the CMHC said in a release.

Across Alberta, total housing starts in the seven largest cities dropped by 49 per cent year-over-year despite increased building in Wood Buffalo and Lethbridge.

I find it hard to make an opinion about it. It looks rather, unfinished... none of the details are shown - it's more of a sketch; but pretty good.

What's with the top of the rightmost building?

What is with the crappy SketchUp renderings? Why don't they render it with Artlantis or something so it doesn't look like a 15 year-old designed it?

EDIT: Like the sq. footage... but I agree Cold, I want to laugh and cheer at the same time.

^Not sure what to think. At least it's better than the pos debut rendering. Maybe once I know what kind of materials they will be using I can give an opinion.

i just want to know why we create buildings that 'try to hard' to be something and end up failing at that?

I just cant seem to take the Urbia towers seriously. Maybe because of the original GMH sketch. If they're serious, they should put together a better rendering. (so far I have seen three vastly different designs)

so these guys have done a few strip malls and few 4 story wood frame buildings and they think they can suddenly put up these towers?

I "love" how that one rendering gives zero impression of the podium, which is arguably the most important thing that this project should focus on.

I'm no expert, but the same developer is doing this in Victoria. Taken from the "Silkwind" website. Why can't it be more along these lines?

Just my opinion of course.

that's the existing delta suites hotel on top of the bay... the "rendering" looks like it's been done from the corner of manulife at 102 ave and 103 st.
