I have to say, that as much as I hate seeing trees being cut down, I think Granville street looks better without them. For a street that is unlike any other in the city, it allows for a better visual impact, and makes you take notice of it all. Coming into downtown at night over the Granville bridge is now quite impressive I find, especially when the street is wet - the whole thing glows. Bring on even more lights I say... and don't bother replanting trees with the new street redesign.

Does anybody else think that the Sears building, aka big marshmellow, would look great with ads/billboards projected onto it at night time? It's like a giant screen waiting to be used. I also think that retail units should be created on the Granville side of the Sears building, giving more life to the street in that block.

Ok bye.

Me too. A couple weeks ago I saw a Starbucks ad projected onto the blank wall of a building on Broadway. It was huge, covering the entire width of that side of the building, and it looked surprisingly good. Normally, I think this desire for bright, flashy, corporate advertizing in public spaces is stupid. I like the neon signs for shops and venues, and I agree that type of advertizing should be encouraged. Anyway, it was the building that had the explosion a year ago, at Heather I think.

One of the things I like about the lack of trees on Granville now is that you're better able to see and appreciate some of the great old architecture on the street, like the Commodore.

they used to do some stuff on the side of sears years ago - they had some laser ads and projections

but i haven't seen them do it in a long time

maybe the city doesn't permit it?

RE Phase 2 of Downtown South Park

Looks like every building expect for the corner unit at Davie and Seymour is closed and being prepped for DEMO. Good to see some movement here.

That's definitely one of the buildings that stands out now. And even some of the newer modern retail spaces further north contrast that nicely (Puma comes to mind).

a bit off topic but can anyone in the know tell me how many glass suppliers there are in the lower mainland (approximately) that supply glass for highrise projects and such...if not that many then maybe a few names would be cool.

i can only think of Garibaldi glass off the top of my head and am having trouble figuring out how man more there are.
thanks in advance if anyone can help me out.

Do you mean just suppliers or glazing companies in general? Some Companies, such as AGS or Phoenix glazing will both supply and install the glazing systems, but companies like Garabaldi are just suppliers and do not do any of the install themselves.

from Edmonton but do a lot of work in the lower mainland including a fairly famous job on their main page...

i should note, they design, install, and repair...

i should also note, they have some of the highest performing glazing in the world.

I wish that the city would encourage with financial carrots more neon along Granville.

The neon jungle of the Granville hayday was cool.

Some places, like Las Vegas, have lost many old wonderful historical neon signs, probably to their regret.

Historic preservation should include not only the the facades, but the signage as well.

^completely agree...there are truly some gems that used to be or are currently on Granville St.

Edmonton is actually looking at opening a neon "museum" of sorts as they have a whole bunch of old neon signs in storage and are considering putting them up around the downtown as a walking museum.
