Sounds like a list of neighbourhoods that would be included in the book "Stuff White People Like". And yes, that includes "Commercial north of Broadway".

Oh, and I agree about Hastings. Massive potential.

The COV will be using the Granville St redesign to try out parking pay stations. The plan is to have a paystation per block instead of meters infront of every spot. These paystations will give you the option of using credit/debit cards and even proximity cards which you can't currently do. The best part is you could use any paystation to top up your time. They will also be solar powered but hardwired to AC for backup. Here are some of the details in the RFP.

REQUIREMENT
Quotations are invited for the supply of multi-space pay-by-license plate pay stations, as set out herein, for the City of Vancouver. The City of Vancouver is planning to conduct a trial of multi-space pay-by-license plate pay stations in Downtown Vancouver on Granville Street. The City is seeking vendors that have experience and knowledge of similar installations at other municipal organizations and will provide and install parking equipment that will provide reliable, high level service.

Through this RFQ process, the City of Vancouver would like to receive proposals regarding:
a) Complete pay-by-license plate solutions
b) Proposals for additional / optional components
c) Detailed pricing for the solutions and components
d) Integration with enforcement officers and equipment
e) Shared maintenance options and costs
f) License requirements
g) Training and post-implementation support

The purchase of pay-by-license plate pay stations will be used to trial the effectiveness of multi-space parking machines within the existing City of Vancouver parking infrastructure. The City’s expectations with the installation of pay-by-license plate pay stations are (but not limited to):
a) Improved Customer Service
1) Users may purchase time from any pay-station
2) Users will have increased payment options
3) Users will not have to return to their vehicle
4) User can purchase additional time (up to the maximum allowable) remotely.
b) Revenue Increases
1) Increased payment options should increase compliance levels
2) If a pay-station malfunctions, payment can be made at another pay-station and/or by telephone
3) Audit controls for cash flow and revenue collection will be enhanced
c) Management & Operations
1) Rates/operational schedules can be pre-programmed ahead of time
2) Reduced field time for operations
3) Enforcement and collections personnel can be deployed with greater efficiency

^That's what I'd like to know too.

A couple random pics from downtown today:

Canada Place alterations

And the Christmas tree by Shaw Tower jlousa (I think) mentioned awhile ago

And he's right, it does look a bit tacky. And that box at the base is an eyesore. The sign to the left says: This tree was scheduled to be removed as a landscaping project. After the holidays it will be removed and recycled.

yup, and we only allow us white people to shop there. If you look closely on the storefront signs there are "you must be this white" signs.

ridiculous

Yeah, nothing gives a street character like a bunch of big American chain stores.

Yes this thread has definitely got off topic. It's interesting how talk about Robson Street can evolve into a discussion of East Van breakfast joints.

As much as I enjoy learning about great Vancouver eateries, I'll be moving all this food discussion into Robson/East Van threads in the 'Food and Dining' sub-forum.

its weird how westenders hate robson street - most avoid it all costs - prefer to take the side streets to avoid the dreaded Robson

Its not that bad, its great to walk around at night and be surrounded by people of all sorts

granville is getting better but its not fun to stroll at night, the lineups get in the way, the yelling, the screaming, the smokers, the weeders asking if you want skunk etc

davie is ok, denman is ok but they lack the vibe that robson has

I have to add my bit about Robson. For me, Robson has always been a street to avoid. Some interesting places to empty your wallet, but mainly a street with a crapload of people with no good reason to be there other than to just walk amongst other people. One of the many streets that should have much wider sidewalks.

ugh, I have to agree with you about Robson's sidewalks. Brutal because everyone walks so slow and in groups three wide many instances. But even tho about the only store I frequent on Robson is London Drugs or food places, I love being down in that area on a busy night. I love the business and the bustle. I'm a sucker for bustle...

I fully agree about the sidewalks. It also gets a bit annoying when some of the storefronts stick out further on some buildings, so suddenly the sidewalk gets narrower and then wider again etc.

And I also agree that I love the bustle. Robson is one of the few streets where you feel like you could be in a much larger/crowded city (if you like that sort of thing).

Like these pics I took during "Boxing Week" last year:

Almost the end of week 1 and still no activity between Drake and Davie. Block is still open to traffic. How typical of a project in Vancouver.

WRT The Bay facade renovation -
Anyone else notice that there are two shades of biege on the building on the Granville side? The north half of the facade is a lighter colour (a bit yellowish, closer to what I remember) while the south side is a darker browner biege (at first I thought it was due to a reflection from 701 West Georgia (former IBM Tower), but now I don't think so. Now that the scaffolding is coming down on West Georgia side, it also looks to be a bit darker than I remember. Also, on the Seymour side, you can see distinct patches where colour has been applied and it's darker than the original colour.
Does this correspond to the phasing of the building from when it was built? or is it just a difference in colour batches?
Anyone know anything?

Also WRT to the Bay facade - are there plans to replace the awning with something less terrible/ugly? I love the rain cover but that is one brutal brutal thing to have stuck on such a lovely building.

Haven't heard anything. I wouldn't want to see a standard "westcoast" tilted back awning and a heritage one would be too boring (i.e. look at the new awning on the Vancouver Block). An undulating awning (like on the Opus Hotel) would be very cool but could be hard to affix to the building.
