I loved the burned out R in the Orpheum sign, maybe you can get some tourists on a friday night asking the staff how much the opium costs.

One day you'll grow up, move out of your parent's basement, and find that there are places more interesting than Robson Street.

I don't live in my parents basement and still buy name brand clothes instead of trying to be "unique" or "ironic" or whatever trend the Yuppies like nowadays

I buy most of my clothes at Costco, how is that for trendy! hahahaha. I love Robson for the crowds and the Japanese/Korean influence. I think that is the divide here, those who like more of a crowded big city "go go" feel with famous brand stores and good Japanese/Korean food like Robson street. Those who don't enjoy such an atmosphere hate it.

Robson is also good for people watching So many interesting people. And if you know enough of another language you can listen in on what people are saying. Is that creepy? Japanese people are always interesting to listen in on. I remember this Summer a group of them talking about how cold it was when it was like +22 and everybody else had t-shirts, shorts and sandals on. I told them they were crazy, and it's a beautiful day. They looked at me funny and kind of laughed. They also usually remark on how there is so many Chinese people. And if they hear other Japanese people talking they try to guess where they are from, sometimes insulting them by saying they "sound so Country..." or "oh, they must be one of THOSE people from Osaka / Tokyo (depending on if they are from Osaka or Tokyo)

Its very true, they always comment on the number of Chinese people in metro-vancouver. It is the most funny when they are just new to Vancouver and they thought it was going to be a pure white city. Weather is interesting comments coming from Japanese. If they are from more northern parts of Japan then summer feels normal to them but winter feels very warm. If they are from the middle of Japan, which most are (Osaka and Tokyo) then summer feels cool to them (especially downtown near the water) but winter feels more or less the same. then if they are from southern Japan then obviously all year feels cool for them.

Woah. I have never seen Vancouver so well described in a single sentence.

This is Vancouver to you?

There are people like this in Vancouver, yes, but they are not quote unquote Vancouver. Perhaps it is more of an outdated stereotype, yes. As for not liking chain stores and Robson, well that doesn't make you a dirty hippy. What silly generalizations.

I like a big city go go feel as well as the Japanese/Korean influence but the stores on Robson are incredibly boring. None of them differ from anything in a mall, anywhere. As well there are certain types of pretentious, overly-materialistic individuals that seem more prevalent on Robson than elsewhere.

just as silly as the generalization that people who like robson street must be immature and live in their parents basements

Bad US Lending practice --> Myriad subprime mortgage holders going bankrupt --> Banks forced to make big write downs --> New York Titans go Bankrupt --> US Socializes their banking and mortgage system (almost!) --> Major US credit crisis spreads fear abroad --> Housing market softens --> Major investment banks no longer want to finance construction even when a project has significant presales (worried about the value of the property upon completion; is it worth less than the mortgage required to buy it?) --> Lenders stop lending --> Constructors stop building --> Rumours fly --> Everyone holds their breath

End result?
Vancouver Downtown Updates thread has no life... and hopefully doesn't become a 'project graveyard.'

Agreed. I wasn't the one who made that statement. But perhaps it's better not to counter silliness with further silliness.

even if all the problematic skyscrapers go up in downtown, its skyline isnt so much different anyways. It could look denser, a little taller but not any bigger than it looks now.
