Really? Not too bad? It looks like a kids project made of equally sized cardboard boxes with holes cut out for the windows. The thing has a ghoulish look to it!

It looks as if somebody puked on a set of blueprints and they just built according to that. Has that already been said?

are bricks really that expensive? that building would have looked a trillion times better had it been in red brick like the big printing building beside it.

i dont get why all the windows are exactly the same size...did they find them at the re-store or something?

it is kind of sad to see the ghost of a marks and spencer sign on that storefront near hydro that once had a u of w distance education class in it...they have removed the awning that they had there to expose the old sign.

Adds about as much to the street as the Kromar building does.

Chief wants police station in downtown Winnipeg

Last Updated: Tuesday, December 2, 2008 | 10:26 AM CT - CBC News

Winnipeg's chief of police says he would like to see the force keep its headquarters downtown.

Keith McCaskill is awaiting a report from city planners to tell him if the current Public Safety Building on Princess Street should be renovated or if the headquarters should be located elsewhere.

"If we have it downtown, I think it's great for the area," McCaskill said. "We've got more officers coming and going from the facility. And in the downtown area, it helps to revitalize and so on. That's not a bad thing."

The limestone exterior on the current Public Safety Building is deteriorating.

Police also say the current building no longer functions well for 911 services and people who work on disaster response.

McCaskill said that before long police also will need a new processing unit for prisoners, a larger place to store evidence and a better forensic facility.

City officials say the future of the building will be decided soon.

Sorry had to look again - all that's added is access from the west, right? Elevators and stairs likely? Wellington West is expanding into Brick's, not sure if Brick will have any presence or not.

You are probably right about the westerly expansion being elevator and stairs. The thing i don't understand is DTZ is soliciting leasing for the whole building, if Wellington West isn't moving there then what are their plans? They NEED to expand and i thought them buying this building solved their plans.

I thought they only needed a couple of floors for the moment - TV you think they're not expanding at all? Jennifer Jones needs a bigger office!

Louise Bridge to be replaced
By: Bartley Kives
Winnipeg Free Press

Dec 3/2008

THE two-lane Louise Bridge is going to be replaced with a new four-lane span over the Red River, allowing city officials a chance to consider realigning the vital link between downtown and the east side of Winnipeg.
The 2009 capital budget calls for the Louise Bridge, the city's second-oldest existing bridge, to be replaced in 2015 or 2016 with a new four-lane connection between Point Douglas and Elmwood.

Built in 1911, the two-lane bridge is believed to be too old to be rehabilitated. So city engineers are planning to completely replace the often-congested span, either on the site of the existing north-south Louise Bridge or parallel to the east-west CPR Keewatin tracks, which would create a more direct link between downtown and Transcona.

"This is badly needed. Traffic is backed up there constantly," said Transcona Coun. Russ Wyatt, city council's new infrastructure-renewal secretary. "The east side of the city is growing and we have to find a way to service the needs of the population."

As recently as a year ago, city engineers pegged the cost of replacing the Louise Bridge at anywhere from $20 million to $60 million.

But that number has been revised up to $100 million, as the city's public works department considers realigning Higgins Avenue, which currently curves to the north to the existing Louise Bridge, or even building the new bridge along with an east-west rapid-transit corridor that would connect downtown with Transcona.

"We've put a number in there for now. Once we get the actual design, we'll know a lot better," public works director Bill Larkin said Tuesday, after council's public works committee approved the 2009 capital budget and five-year capital spending forecast.

Planning for the new Louise Bridge will not begin in earnest until 2013, after repairs to the Disraeli Freeway are finished. Earlier this week, the city short-listed three private construction consortia to potentially tackle the $134- million Disraeli job, which could see reconstruction work begin in 2010.

The Disraeli work calls for a new bike-and-pedestrian bridge to connect Elmwood and Point Douglas halfway between the Disraeli Freeway and the current Louise Bridge site. But that does not preclude the possibility a new active-transportation corridor will be built into a new bridge, Larkin said.

If the new Louise Bridge is built in an east-west configuration, it could connect Higgins Avenue with the Nairn Avenue Overpass or even bypass the Nairn Overpass completely by hooking up with the south end of Kent Street in East Elmwood, Larkin said.

The only thing that is certain is that the existing two-lane span will be replaced by a four-lane bridge.

The oldest existing bridge in Winnipeg is the Redwood Bridge, built in 1908 and reconstructed in 2006.

Good riddance. This is going to make many commuters very happy.

Yeah. It's ridiculous how you start off with 3 or 4 lanes of traffic on Regent, and then on Nairn, it dwindles down to 3 lanes, then two lanes. By the time you hit the Louise Bridge, it's basically game over with congestion, single lane two way traffic.

I'm glad they finally did something about this! 10 years late in my opinion, but better late than never.

The option for a rapid transit corridor would fit in nicely. The Nairn St. overpass could be the junction for a rapid transit line along the Marconi line. The only thing I would miss of the current bridge is the nostalgia. Perhaps it could be maintained a a pedestrian bridge (albeit a very wide one) akin to the Elm Park ? bridge (Bridge Drive In). And please A. J. S. - Kildoland Place??? That would almost make a great name for a place that sells — toys - (with just one minor change)
