Commotion at Wilson & John

Anybody have a clue as to what's going on here? Lots of police presence in front of weirdo Gary Proctor building.

yea, as opposed to all the fat white kids from North America who spend days and days reading good books and writing in their journals before heading off to tennis lessons and then tending to their organic, back-yard garden.

Not entirely on-topic except for the gaming, but has anyone been by the P0wnz gaming centre on King East (near threesixteen lounge and the Freeway) at night? I've been in a couple times and the'yre doing incredible business... almost all with young teenagers (almost all skinny white kids, actually - haha - but a good mix of guys and girls too).

I was pretty impressed - huge building (much bigger than it seems) good staff, many systems, good games selection (but only certain ratings - a lot are multiplayer-oriented, so sets parents' minds at ease) -- and they have enough well-trained, outgoing staff to keep an eye on things.

Its been so successful thus far the owner wants to open a second location (either on the Mountain or Stoney Creek) as well as possibly a more adult-oriented gaming shop with a bar, etc. I'm a huge nerd myself (got my D&D group tonight!), so I love that idea.

http://www.pownz.com/ is their website.

I've been to Pownz a couple of times. It's pretty nice but I'm not too fond of the game selection, and was very disappointed there were no PC's. I haven't returned though, since I discovered ISP cafe on John N. has a selection that matches my tastes better, and is less $ per hour. The place is a lot more dingy and the people that go there are a bit sketchy, but the equipment is good and the price is fair.

I'd agree that its not the cheapest (or good for PC gaming) - I was more surprised that its so slick and teen-friendly, and they're very successful (with a relatively expensive setup too) -- there isn't much talk about attracting people younger than university age to downtown, but teens have huge disposable income, and grow up to be consumers like anyone else.

Here's a guy who's attracting teenagers not only from downtown, but from all over the city downtown during the afternoon and evenings, on a regular basis. There's going to be some positive spinoff from that and I'd hope people can build on that.

Arrest in stabbing outside Internet cafe

November 25, 2008
The Hamilton Spectator
(Nov 25, 2008)

One man is in hospital and another in custody following a stabbing at a downtown Hamilton Internet cafe Sunday night.

Police said a 21-year-old man suffered non-life threatening injuries when he was stabbed in the neck outside the cafe at John and Wilson streets.

The victim was transported to hospital for treatment. He remains in serious but stable condition.

The suspect, who was known to the victim, ran away from the scene.

Through interviews with witnesses, police determined the identity of the suspect and police arrested him at his home early yesterday.

The police called in the canine unit to search for the weapon Sunday night and further searches were conducted yesterday.

The incident is still under investigation.

Anyone with more information is asked to call police at 905-546-3833.

I'm not into that stuff, but I've heard that this place is very cool and was done up nicely by the owners. Good stuff for King East.

I'm going to take a picture of that building. It is weird, but as the years go by its gets more interesting looking.

I remember reading a story about this building in The Spec. Some guy built this place and just named it after his young son who died. Of course he hasn't owned it in a long time now.

The building turned out to be not much of a tribute to poor young Gary Proctor.

I like it too. But it needs something to give it a soul, i.e. a major tenant with some artistic flair to offset the squareness of the building.

Having lived in Vancouver for 30 years, I can tell you that the Asian Internet cafe's have had many, many, MANY stabbings/shootings/deaths/robbery's/you name it since their inception.

This does not surprise me, nor any of my other friends back home whom I've forwarded this too.

Par for the course for Asian Internet/gaming cafes... par for the course.
